In this video, I share my journey of attempting to lift and restore a 200-year-old log cabin without any prior experience, a venture that unfortunately took a turn for the worse. The cabin, once a bakery, had significantly settled over the years, with many of its logs in poor condition and a roof that leaked profusely. Faced with the decision to either dismantle the cabin log by log or to lift it and replace the damaged sections, I opted for the latter, not fully understanding the challenges ahead.
The preparation process was vastly underestimated. I acquired a substantial number of 10x10cm timber beams, two jacks, a robust drill with bits, fresh lumber for replacement, and a chainsaw mill, committing fully to the project. I anchored the beams around the cabin using threaded rods, intending to lift the exterior with jacks and then transfer the weight to the interior beams.
The goal was to replace the bottom two to three layers of logs. However, during the lift, it became apparent that the support material was inadequately prepared, leading to the cabin slipping off the makeshift supports and culminating in a disaster.
The aftermath involved hiring a forwarder to help dismantle the remnants of the project. This experience taught me the importance of thorough preparation and the value of proceeding cautiously in ambitious restoration projects.
