bit.ly/brehona... Skilled in traditional laws, they chanted laws from eminences in the open air. 'Brehon' from 'Breithimh' meant an expert, interpreter, and preserver. Originally, one person embodied Druid, Filid, and Brehon; later, they separated.
Christianity led Druids to become Brehons, intertwining poetry and law. Poetic utterances were deemed divine, enhancing Brehons' judgments. Despite being called judges, they were legal experts, often mediators.
Highly respected, Brehons influenced kingdoms, receiving land awards. Becoming a Brehon required rigorous study, and memorizing legal records, rules, and genealogies. Access was initially open, but it later became hereditary.
Discover where law, history, poetry, and tradition converged in the hands of this revered class of scholars.

I came across Brehon law in the novels of Petet Tremayne, and his protagonist Fidelma of Cashel, really interesting and progressive, especially with regard to women.

The Fatima series, I believe? I've not read those but heard they are great for fans of Irish history told through fiction. I've a bunch of videos on my channel about women under the Brehon Law. Feel free to browse the arvhive.

Thanks! I love all history, and love historical novels, if they are well written and researched you can learn so much.

Also, the Fidelma books describe the Irish Church before the penitentiary rules, when monks and nuns could marry and have children, before priests were referred to as father. You should check them out. I'm forever googling how to pronounce gailic words, and finding out what the areas are called now. It's fascinating.
