Arma Reforger might be, to some, a solid foundation for Arma 4 but should you pay for it? Hazbo Rambles and tries to pin down Reforgers true identity. Is it a tech demo or can we consider this a full Arma release? Does it hold promise for the future of the franchise? Have your say in the comments but keep it CLEAN!

What's weird with Reforger is how the gunplay and movement seem more arcade'y (strafing and erratic movement like in DayZ shouldn't be a viable tactics in a gunfight) and yet vehicles and other mechanics are on the simulation side. Otherwise Reforger is very promising. The amount of work put into vehicles makes me really hopeful.

Its a balancing act I suppose, A3 felt so rigid and clunky at times and in AR it feels just a wee bit to "loose" they just need to tone it down a small amount and adjust recoil on the move and it should be golden. Vehicles are so much better, agreed. excited to see What they will do with planes and battle tanks. Even more excited to see what the modders can do with the 1st person interactivity

Love a good HazBo video. Personally, reforger disappointed me. I got it when it released and it felt to me like they're making modders pay for the SDK for Arma reforger and Arma 4 to get mods up and running to build the game we (the player base) want that is just never delivered on release from BI. I returned it. The modding scene is looking promising but to me it felt like a slap in the face to the modders we all love and to us long time players. Cold war gone hot game with no jets or tanks is also just pretty pitiful, especially a year on

I mean I get both sides of the coin here, modder wise I think they (the modders) knew the score here...when it first released in early access. The interest would be huge, a chance to see the inner workings and like you said get mods up and running for Reforger and the arrival of Arma 4. That I get and can't argue with. Intact when it first released BI were very honest and it sounded more of a support us with testing and building upon infusion. The game part as you put it, feels like a slap in the face to some within the community. The more they added the more it changed. It has grown from enthusiast support for the development of Arma 4 to being marketed as a full title. If I had to the video over I think I'd be inclined to cover the "value" argument but as I said in the video...it's proved a most difficult subject. Logic Vs my love of the series. Sorry for the rant...I'm at work so this could be verbal diarrhoea 🤣

Not sure why you had such a hard time deciding if this is a game or not. It's clearly a game. The workbench is worth the cost of entry alone! The deluxe edition was never advertised as a full game, but as more of a treat for early adopters - rather than to reel new people in. Free upgrade for people who already own it.

Hey Chewie, thanks for stopping by, admittedly the video turned more into a discussion of value rather than the question posed in the thumbnail. I may adjust to reflect or maybe not.... Would I recommend this, as an arma title, to others? No ...not yet. I can see you draw immense value from the work bench via your twitter alone....worthy islands isn't it? Workbench hasnt really factored in yet. I appreciate its a powerful suite and would/will be a massive selling point when the platform matures. As for the deluxe stuff...chewie i love arma & BI but i still think its a bit tone deaf to call curtains on early access, slap a 1.0 on it and offer deluxe goodies. Reforger still has some whacky, weird and wonderful bugs and a roadmap that i feel should constitue to a 1.0. Granted noone is forcing new players to buy it. Personally wouod have re branded the deluxe to a armaholic supporter pack or summit. All in my very humble opinion of course....and i consider myself very moderated. 😂

The state of AI in general is worrying to be honest. I get that Reforger is PvP oriented but as a supposed testbench for A4 wouldn't it be tremendously important to test what can be done with AI in Enfusion? Just imagine for example squads working together in a goal oriented framework or proper use of suppresion. Or even tactics reflecting the differences between Russian and American doctrine. I just can't believe they don't work on stuff like that or at least try to.

@youcantpredictthat Yep, and it is roadmapped. The most we can do is wait for BI. I do have faith that they'll come through. I just didn't expect them to go to 1.0 without it. I did hear that arma 3 had its hang ups when it launched, though. And it's turned into a spectacular game.
@youcantpredictthat

@@jesseblackwell2884 sure, I'm just kind of worried that we will land on exactly A3's level AI. And we need something much more ambitious. That's probably it. I don't see that there's ambition regarding AI in Bohemia's team and I'm worried they'll push something somewhat playable and say job done.

Thanks HazBo, this was a really interesting video. Here’s my rant on AR… I’ve been on Reforger since day 1. Before that I had built up over 3,000 hours on Arma 3. I had very low expectations of AR when it was released, but as someone who has loved the Operation Flashpoint / Arma series since 2001, I was more that happy to hand over $40 (Australian) to support BI in developing their new engine and bring us closer to Arma 4. I think it’s fair to say I was equally as underwhelmed as I was really impressed with AR. There are so many great things about AR and so many unbelievably frustrating and mind boggling things too with AR and some of the decisions BI seems to be making (like moving out of early access prematurely and the silly “deluxe” offering, which is so cringe!). But generally, I was surprised how playable AR actually was and all in all I’ve grown to love AR, especially the main Conflict PVP game mode which I think has awesome potential to be the best PVP CTI game mode of any of the Arma series. I found it so engrossing that 18 months later, I’ve got 1000 hours in AR and I’ve not gone back to A3 at all. The AR environment is so immersive and intuitive, it’s great. AR may be less than 1% of A3, but it does that 1% so much better, for example, driving vehicles is so good, it’s actually fun compared to A3. I think BI have gotten a lot of unfair criticism about AR. I agree with everyone else about the disappointments, but the truth is, as usual, BI are trying to push the limits of what they can do. They’ve always been ambitious and sometimes this brings them undone. The first months of AR were pretty disastrous and BI had to learn some hard lessons. It took BI over a year to finally get AR to a somewhat decent state, but as usual, it’s been a 2 steps forwards, 1 step backwards kind of progress. But one thing BI definitely got 100% right was to release AR as a stand alone title between A3 and A4. Could you imagine the total disaster it would’ve been had they just gone straight to A4?! We have to remember that BI are not just working on AR but have also put huge investment into developing the new Enfusion engine and the Workbench tools for modding too, which has made modding so much easier and way more accessible. So for me, for anyone who loves Arma and wants to see Arma 4 they should support BI and get AR, and contribute to the effort to get us there. Eventually when everyone is getting into A4, they’ll have those of us who stuck with and supported BI through AR to thank. Nothing that is truly great and ground breaking comes easy. To quote a once great man: “Don’t ask what Arma can do for you, ask what you can do for Arma!”

Hey Glenn, Wow what a post! Its interesting you bring the development perspective into the equation and I somewhat agree. I think its very easy to forget we have had the luxury of 3 or 4 iterations of the RV engine? The last of which was for Arma 3's development...its quite remarkable what they did with the already aging RV engine it was like its last moment in the spotlight. More relevant to your post however is when looking back they released A3 piecemeal/episodic. Survive, adapt and win. So yeah, on the face of it I suppose its not BI's first time building foundations for a future, maybe it feels worse because as you say its a new engine and maybe we should cut it some slack...which can be as equally easy AND as hard to say given the persons perspective on the situation. In all honesty I feel how this title has been marketed has been the main contributing factor to the mixed bag we face. When I first covered AR I was alot more "here for the process" but as time grew maybe in a mixture of my naivety, marketing and lets be honest my own "expectations" I've grown to view it more as a full blown title and have judged it as such, as have many others...That part is on BI for slapping 1.0 on it. I think many armaholics would have accepted its EA state ALOT longer considering the monumental task of essentially.... rebuilding Arma? Totally in agreement that this was always going to be difficult and at times rocky but I think there is lessons to be learnt here. better to learn in AR instead of A4? absolutely aslong as they ARE learned.

@@HazBofficial Yeah, from a “business” perspective BI are all over the place on AR. My interpretation of what has happened goes like this. When BI initially released AR, I’m sure they anticipated there would be bugs and issues to deal with, however, I think there were orders of magnitude more issues than they expected. They would’ve needed to have shifted planned resources from developing content, etc, to fixing fundamental connectivity and stability issues, etc. BI presumably don’t have deep pockets just to bring on a whole lot of new staff to deal with these technical issues, I would guess. So this meant that the development timeline went out the window for AR until they could “fix it”. And this took the better part of a year. Naturally this would’ve impacted sales. From a business point of view this would’ve put a lot of pressure on them as they would’ve still been trying to hit projected earnings / profitability expectations that would’ve been set beforehand. So this to me is why we’ve seen a mixed bag of communications / marketing from them. They’re trying to play “catch up” and it’s obvious they’re pushing too hard on that, by going 1.0 too soon. I agree that I was surprised they went to 1.0, because in my book it’s not there yet. Still so many bugs. Some of the recent changes they made to Conflict PVP game mode don’t seem to be consistent with their previous considerations. I think they felt the pressure to try and make it more accessible to noobs, which to me is a problem of not sticking with your design philosophy, which in turn is a sign of business pressure to “just get it out there”.

I refunded my purchase of Reforger. I get a so much better experience from modded Arma 3 compared to what Reforger currently brings. The nail in the coffin for me and my friends was the performance, since the new engine's main focus was supposed to be performance improvements yet I run Arma 3 at 140 FPS while Reforger barely gets 70. Yes, Reforger has more stable FPS so it doesn't fluctuate as much but Reforger is such barebones right now compared to A3's content and still gets worst performance than Arma 3 even without proper Ai driving, far smaller maps compared to A3 and so many less assets and even on that barebones state it cannot outperform the super unoptimized Arma 3! It is incredible to be honest.
@HazBofficial
@HazBofficial 9 месяцев назад
Performance wise...well put it this way, just like peoples overall opinion in Reforger, it's a mixed bag. It's ran better for me than A3...I'm not sure because it's more GPU bound as my GPU is stronger than my CPU. A3 was deffo more CPU heavy. A3 had the advantage of 3 or 4 iterations if the RV engine. They were right to change, it's dated technologically. Although because there is no competition there's not been much reason to change until now. This was always gonna be a Rocky road...I just think they've been out of touch with the community by slapping deluxe on and calling curtains on its early access period.

In its current state, it's hard to argue. Hence the opening comments. I can see past most of the annoyances and lack of content. Besides the editor and a proper SP mission framework, the one thing that will make or break that "spirit" or feeling of Arma is gonna be how they handle ai.
