From Firewood Log to Bowl (First Woodturning Project) | Crafted Workshop

Build article w/ step by step process: craftedworksho.... I turned this chunk of firewood log into my first bowl on the lathe. This was my first ever woodturning project, and most certainly won't be my last. Turning is one of the most rewarding woodworking skills I've learned thus far, and now every log I see seems to contain a hidden bowl.

Crafted Workshop all depends on the video..if it's something that has a lot to it, like joinery, tips, tricks, techniques,etc..then voice overs are good. but if the video speaks for itself and there isnt a whole lot to it then i think a voice over isnt needed. or if the video speaks for itself but there is some tips and tricks involved maybe just touch on that.but, that's just my opinion for anyones video and if I had software to do voice overs that's how I would do it. I wouldn't narrate the whole video, just the areas that needed it. But thats just my personal opinion anyways great video.that was a bit scarty but the log turned out nice I'm about to do a turning video myself for the ornament challenge . trying something new as far as the type/style of ornament. have a good one bro & Happy holiday bro

nice video, perfect with the sounds of the woods etc, but show some "real time" turning and not just the speeded up stuff. Also, how long did this bowl take to turn and make, including the laquer etc ? cheers
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks! This was my first time turning anything of consequence, so it probably took me longer than it should have, but I don’t remember it taking longer than a day.

Awesome job on your first turning! ...as for the style, I do think it suits turning since that's all that's going on. With other projects that entail fitting multiple pieces together and all types of joinery as well as the use of metal, other materials, and various hardware items such as hinges, knobs, and drawer slides etc... I prefer a voiceover so I can understand with more detail what you are doing.

Definitely check out Carter and Son toolworks, they have amazing turning tools, in particular their bowl gouges. Bowls can be turned cleaner faster with much less tear-out than carbide, their tools also look great while being functional
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 7 лет назад
+Phillip Leverett yea I've seen them on Frank Howarth's projects. They're definitely on my list, although I'd have to learn to grind them properly.
@phillipleverett6826
@phillipleverett6826 7 лет назад
Being you are into metal working (similar to me) along with woodworking, a grinding jig can be made of simple scrap material that leaves a near perfect edge each time for use with a slow speed grinder

I was just like Nooooo when I saw the bowl go flying off I'm sure you had more than that to say, but awesome save with a quick glue up and back to work. As far as no voice overs there good once in awhile and I've noticed in the past week a lot of guys are testing the waters with just background music. But that's just my opinion. Johnny have a Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your family and friends and of course the food and football.

Nice job on your first bowl! I really appreciate that you took the time to keep the audio pitch correct even though it's sped up. I like the sped up video, but the usual RU-vid maker way (letting the program raise the pitch when it speeds up) grates on my nerves after a while. 👍
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 7 лет назад
+nomadicmutt same! So annoying. What's funny is that is the default setting in Final Cut Pro, no clue why people go out of their way to get that sound.
@ThomasIndy
@ThomasIndy 7 лет назад
Crafted Workshop I think most of them use Adobe Premiere, who's default setting is to pitch shift for some reason. I'll have to remember that about final cut. Thanks!

Nice work, especially for your first! I also just did my first turning project. It was a door knob for a door I designed and built for my channel. Not having much experience I was pretty cautious...well actually scared. I was afraid the piece was going to come loose and the chisel was some how going to get stuck in my face, lol...I survived!

+Robert Cornelius Robert, appreciate the feedback. The reason I didn't give any instruction on this one is because I'm so new to the lathe. Didn't want to tell people the wrong things. As I learn more, I'll add voiceover back.

I think the piece was well edited, easy to follow and the no voice was a smart idea as to why you did it that way. I do have one question though, where can i get one of those faceplates you used. Thanks..

Props for not laying down an F-bomb when the bowl came off! I liked the style, sort of Kyle Toth-ian :) I think it works really well with you just starting out on the lathe. Seeing the oopsie, and you sort of getting better with your cuts as the video went on made it all the more interesting. Once you're up to speed, I would definitely be anxious to hear your normal voice over on what you've found works/doesn't. You do a great job documenting details, so as someone that's looking to get started turning in my own shop, I would be anxious to hear them.

You should have eaten a bowl of Grits at the end. lol. Great video. I like the visuals. Maybe do two videos. One stylized and Vimeo esque. And one explaining the process. Especially since this was your first time. Maybe saying what steps you took to prepare to jump in.
