This film was produced by the nonprofit PlantPure Communities. Please sign up as a monthly supporter at PlantPureCommunities.org to help us in our mission to share a life-changing health message.
Produced by the team that brought you the hit documentary PlantPure Nation, the award-winning film, From Food to Freedom, tells the story of a live-in immersion program in a rented house in Greensboro, NC with six participants (and two spouses) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The 10-day program includes biometric testing, physician supervision, and daily meals. As we go through the immersion, we hear from participants of their past struggles living with such a dreaded disease, and we hear of their hope for a better life. We watch firsthand as they suddenly change their diet from a standard American diet to a whole food plant-based diet, and we see how this leads to unexpected and astounding results.
This story creates the opportunity for powerful digressions into the topics of nutrition, chronic disease, and immunity. Also examined is the role of government and the media in suppressing one of the important truths of our time.
After catching up with immersion participants six months later, and seeing some of the challenges they face back in the real world, the film ends on an inspiring note, opening our eyes to the possibility of transformational change in society and charting a hopeful pathway for people wanting to live free of disease and costly pharmaceuticals.

I have tried and failed to live whole food plant based. I gave up meat and fish but failed on. dairy and eggs and junk food. Rewatching forks over knives, and now this documentary has inspired me once more. There is a family history of cancer diabetes heart attacks, etc . I am 50 this year and determined to change my life course. 🎉

Please don't consider yourself a failure but, rather, "a work in progress." It takes a while to transition to a WFPB lifestyle, so be sure to cut yourself some slack! The important thing is you have identified your "why." Keep that in your mind on a daily basis and you will definitely succeed. Thirty two years ago, at age 35, I decided to go pescaterian as a means to avoid the chronic diseases which seemed rampant in my family. I am one of six children in my family and I am the only one who seems to have escaped diabetes. I like to think my diet has been my salvation. Three years ago, I decided to "up my game" and eliminated fish, eggs, dairy and processed foods largely because my husband had been diagnosed with prostate cancer but also because I'd been educating myself on the benefits of a WFPB lifestyle. Thankfully, my husband is doing well. I also decided to stop cooking with oil or consuming products which contain oil (much easier than you would think AND you can really taste what you are eating!). The results have been nothing short of miraculous. I finally "released" the excess 10 pounds of fat around my midsection which so many believe is an inevitable consequence of menopause. NOT TRUE! I now have a ridiculous amount of energy and I take NO medications at age 67. One more added benefit is FREEDOM from obsessing about food. As long as I eat WFPB, I can eat as much as I want, as often as I want, without the fear of weight gain and feeling crappy. Please put your health as your # 1 priority and you will be shocked at how good you were meant to feel!

Sabrina I’m going to be 50 too, in March! I was vegan and/or vegetarian for a few years but got off track in 2022 when I went to visit family. Since then it’s been an uphill battle. But today I started juicing and will do that this week and then do raw foods and juices before going back to a healthy WFPB diet. I miss being healthy and looking my best. I don’t feel sick but I know I have definitely gained weight and that my insides are probably suffering. This video must be a sign that I need to change for good this time. Good luck to us both on our wellness journey 🥰

My Dad challenged me to go on a plant based diet to avoid getting a stroke and many other things that he was experiencing I'm so glad I did it has really paid off. I am a Hallelujah Acres Health Minister am teaching this way of life to many. I as so convinced that this way of life is life giving, I am not perfect but have gotten so I don't put myself down for eating some junk plant food and it is happening a lot less. You have to be totally committed to make it work. I have been vegan for 6 years. The real way to become fully plant based to a visceral level, is to watch an animal rights documentary, and there are many out there. I watched 'Earthlings' and that was a 'no turning back' moment. Industrial Animal agriculture aka Factory Farming has so much to answer for. Environmental damage, health damage and total disrespect of animal rights. To all considering going plant based, be brave, take control. Many thanks, Dr Campbell.

This program was so refreshing and honest. As a vegan pharmacist I can’t tell you how often I recommend patients go on a whole food plant based diet. They feel hopeless and resigned to take over a dozen meds on a daily basis. They tell me their doctor never talked to them about a wfpb diet. I know how sneaky and dishonest BigPharma can be and this program showed patients’ true responses to being on these harmful meds and how they feel about BigPharma. I loved it when that patient had his own Independence Day; I straight up cried and felt so happy for him and the others. Please make more programs like this available in poorer, underserved cities like here in South Florida because the Latin and Haitian community here is large and animal based foods heavy.

If fruit bothers you, or you think they do, don't eat them. You have a whole big world of fruits and vegetables to enjoy. All you're giving up are animal products and oils. Dr. McDougall puts it simply. He says to pick out a starch, and add some colorful vegis. I have lost about 100 lbs and am struggling to put a halt to the downward trajectory. I've added avocados, and almonds. Because of my history, I figured I'd gained, but got weighed yesterday, and was down 4 lbs. I will continue to work within the calorie density plan, but have to learn to maintain a healthy fit way if life. Thank you all for being so honest. I've known about, and eaten plant based/vegan since the early 80s, but managed to gain a lot of weight, and lose my way pretty good. Now, I'm back on track, and hope you stick with it too.

Yep! As Dr. Esselstyn said in the Forks Over Knives documentary: "Some people call WFPB Nutrition extreme. Half a million people a year will have their chests opened up, and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme." 100% true, but he was a little too gracious- changing "some" to "most" is more accurate! I feel so strongly for some of these people who have struggled with the changes. Though I have gone through a long journey of getting to a WFPB existence, I was not making the best food choices even under an otherwise healthy-seeming diet. Only in the past 18 months or so have I been focused the actual nutrition and my actual needs and calorie requirements, which has led to great improvements in my health, weight, and energy. I still have a chronic condition that will never go away, but my medications have been lowered by 75% or more and I am in significantly less pain than before. It was very hard for me, though, to let go of the idea that I was an unwell person, and to have no hope that real improvements would ever happen, and used that mindset as an excuse to keep making indulgent or self-pitying food choices. It actually took a family trip where I was lagging behind and in terrible pain the whole time to face the reality that it was entirely up to me to improve my health condition. Nobody else could do it for me. Best of luck to anyone else out there struggling. The best advise I can offer you: Don't eat everything you want.

That was inspiring. It was wonderful to see the dramatic changes in health that took place. I think a big part of that success was the sense of community that the immersion group created. People from different backgrounds all found common ground in turning their lives and health around. I thank you for including the 6 months later part. It showed that remaining plant-based is a struggle when you are on your own, surrounded by small-minded people, and food industry propaganda. I too have recently gone plant-based and have already seen some dramatic reductions in total and LDL cholesterol and a dramatic increase in my kidney eGFR. I have also been going on 3 mile brisk walks after dinner. After initial pushback from my wife, she is coming up with interesting meatless dishes for me. I have created my own version of the Seventh Day Adventist "haystack," leaving out the salty, processed parts but including leftover rice and potatoes, chopped cabbage and lettuce, fruit and nuts, and tossing them with a low fat dressing. RU-vid channels like Earthling Ed, Plantchompers, and Plant Based News provide me with the inspiration and scientific facts I need to continue. I wish that a short version of this video concentrating just on the people in the immersion group and their before, during, and after experiences could be made so that it could get wider distribution. Maybe your "graduates" could become public speakers who show such a video and then add any extra themes like prevention of the next pandemic in the discussion that follows.

I've known many vegetarians that were weak and unhealthy that had anemia, broken and brittle nails, dull and lifeless hair, thin muscles, tiredness, depression and anxiety, underweight and sickly. I've known other vegetarians who became obese as vegetarians. Everyone's chemistry and metabolism is different. You aren't talking about vegetarians that eat healthy then. Being vegetarian doesn't mean the individual eats whole food plant based foods. I'm 64 and in the health field and see a ton of people and the majority of people who eat whole food plant based food are far superior in health then those that eat the standard American diet. That's easily backed up with data. However, if you want to selectively look at vegetarians who eat tons of processed food and try comparing them to others, that's a biased assessment but not what this is about. Compare apples with apples. There is plenty of data to support long term improvement by eating a whole food plant based diet.

Its funny how, even people I'd gone to the gym with regularly, responded to the pandemic and gym closures so differently. Some of us became fitter than we'd ever been, started to grow our own vegetables, and built gardens - others seemed to completely give up and gained a lot of weight. I think the "why?" is very important when you make a decision to tske care of yourself. It needs to be bigger than you. If you're lucky and just love it, you'll always come up with a "why." But if its hard for you, you need to really think about why you want to live this way, and the "whys" need to be strong enough convictions that you don't bargain it all away - as in "my cholesterol numbers were xxx, now their x, maybe I can just do what i want and stop at xx?" I don't know, just a thought...

Raised a hard core vegan by hippie parents. We didn’t eat processed vegan real scratch vegan. Started to develop severe autoimmune conditions. In my fifties I saw a natural path and they put me in the begging on a modified autoimmune protocol diet. I needed meat. They told me, but I’ve never eaten meat so the thought of it was disgusting but I was determined to heal myself naturally. So I started with bone broth liver pills. I eventually started eating quality grass fed humanely raised animal products. I am in the best health of my life, I rarely eat vegetables. Everybody is different we all have our unique way of being. But I discovered that I had celiac disease, so the fresh grain bread that my dad was grinding himself was killing me. I also have an allergy to soy. And yeast. All these things were contributing to my autoimmune diseases. Diet is not one size fits. Plants were killing me literally.

Developing autoimmune issues and then eating meat and saying viola I'm cured is not how science is conducted. What did the meat have to do with any of that? Why on earth don't you eat veggies? Veggies have nothing to do with autoimmune diseases and being raised vegan had what to do with developing autoimmune diseases later in life? There is nothing humane about eating meat from an animal. Everybody isn't different when it comes to good nutrition. We all operate on the basic foundation of good nutritional principles backed up by science. There is no debate on the fact that your diet should be composed of mostly fruits and veggies. After that, people can quibble but hardly eating veggies as you stated is not a good idea at all whether your are functioning or not. Long term that may very well come back to bite you in the you know where. Fiber is extremely important and meat has none.

All plant proteins have incomplete amino acid patterns. This makes it impossible to renew the body. A complete protein can not be created by mixing the incomplete proteins of legumes and grains, (i.e.beans and rice) Complete proteins are found only in animal products. The protein from eggs, milk, ruminants support growth. The only picture needed to prove this point is a comparison between the stunted appearance of kids raised on soy spreads, nut milk and fake meat...to those well nourished with whole raw milk, raw butter, regeneratively raised grass fed ruminants and pastured eggs. Each day the body is deprived of complete protein is a day of damage. The species appropriate diet for humans is carnivore. Check out what former vegans say to their carnivory doctors on youtube.😢

Cows milk has much more growth hormones than human milk because it's excellent nourishment for calves - not for humans. Have you thought where the animals who you eat have got their protein? Why do we have microbiome thriving with fiber rich foods? Do you know what is endothelial glycocalyx ?

Much respect to T.Colin Campbell, but this is the most depressing documentary I think I’ve ever watched. Forks over knives inspired us. This one just left us feeling blah. The documentary didn’t give a lot of solid facts about how being plant-based specifically changes things for people. It didn’t show recipes or how to transition to a fully Whole Foods plant-based lifestyle. The guy with stage four kidney disease never mentions if his kidney failure has improved. Most of the people quit and are in the same or worse shape than before the documentary. My husband and I are struggling to remain animal protein free and seeking to be more pure Whole Foods plant-based eaters, and we hoped this documentary would inspire us. Instead, it left us feeling dejected. If most of those people couldn’t do it after an immersive experience, we ask ourselves how will we be any different.

Please take a look around you, do a little research, it won't take much. There is so much horrible sickness, debilitating lifestyles today. How could anyone make such a statement. Food, exercise lifestyle change, that's the very thing we need to take a real look at. The processed foods we have been so drawn to, is killing us. Your children are dieing from the FDA APPROVED food, drink, nameless drugs, countless over the counter very expensive products, we have been successful convinced we need. It's not true, this program should be funded by our government, but it's not. Why? It's a short but very accurate answer. Healthy people don't need pharmaceutical drugs, artificial food and drink. Think about it. Your health is NOT more important than big companies making billions from the things that are killing us and our children. I'm just sorry I didn't learn these facts 50 years ago. Please investigate before its too late you you and yours. Don't continue to pass on to your children the same unhealthy lifestyles we have for the last too many years.
