You were my inspiration to Major in both Theology and English, Rev. Guite. Your synthesis of literature and faith is highly admirable. Thank you for the many tours and welcoming in your library!
I would love to find a copy of this book. I am an Old Soul and have known so since my early childhood years. GOD makes no mistakes and each person was born into the generation meant to be. That being said I have spent my life feeling like I should have been in a different era. I relate more to the " old" than I do the new. Thank you, Malcom another awesome read. GOD bless~ Debbie.
Thank you, Malcolm, for giving me a bit of Literary Courage to face the "droghte of March" . I often think of MacDonald's quote that "no man is condemned for any sin save one - that he will not leave his sins and come out of them and be the child of Him who is his Father." Encouraging indeed. Tonight I will have a dram of the Green Spot single pot with you. Slainte Mhath!
Relaxing watching on a Saturday night. Thanks Malcolm. Im a Yorkshire lad that finds himself currently enjoying the comforts of Mexico City. Been enjoying your back catalogue of RU-vid videos as well as your talks and speeches on other channels regarding imagination and poetry, of which Im both a fan. Take care or con cuidado!
I thought of this song with the MacDonald poem you read today. Thank you for sharing! "And it's in my life and it's all the time It doesn't go away when the church bells chime In the evening time when I drink my wine In the evening time when it's on my mind Melancholia, melancholia, melancholia" Van Morrison, Melancholia
Malcolm I have just recently discovered your channel and your channel meets evrything I enjoy. Literature, religion and a calming study atmosphere. I am a 17 year old from Toronto, Canada and I have been introduced to C.S Lewis after I read his work, “Mere Christianity” in religion class. I have been blessed to have a teacher who is so dedicated in his craft and his faith which has done nothing but reinforced my pursuits into history, English and religion in my life. I am planning to study history and English in university with plans on later becoming a secondary school teacher. You inspired me to recreate the inklings as a book club at my school, where we discuss Christian literature, read Tolkien and Lewis and much more. You really are a true gem with such a relaxed but wisdom filled persona!! Thank you for all of your videos, they are so inspiring. Are you planning any events in Toronto, Canada??? If not would you be willing to join a zoom call and provide my club an introduction for the inklings??? I would truly appreciate this!!! P.S I have commited to the art of pipe smoking once I hit 50 or when I get my phd!!!! Take care Mr. Guite!! Nicholas C.
I’m a bit late to the reading, but as the blizzard blows defiantly outside my door on this 5th of March, I feel the plodding steps the soul makes towards the light of spring, as George describes. He is my North Star and I will follow him through valleys because no matter how dark it gets there is always a luminescence around dear George that draws me into the deep joy and peace he knew. Thank you Malcolm.
Thank you! I find so much comfort in listening to your words of wisdom and reciting poetry! What a gift. I understand you’ll be in Chicago in May. Wish it was someplace just a little closer. (I’m in NJ) .
Fantastic! Perfect way to begin the week… watching at 6am on a Sunday. Recently just did a full pre-read of the entire Word in the Wilderness also in anticipation of the coming Easter season. Very blessed by your insights as always! Blessings to you, Malcolm.
Man, people like you, we should to have more and perhaps the world is going to change. People who accept to learn and humble they enjoy every meal from books ! Those books are the muted voice of the people . Only those who love literature, philosophy ! You are model for me! My library is nothing comparing with what you have here ! Beautiful
George MacDonald is one of my favorite authors. I often read and listen to Unspoken Sermons though I'm still trying to understand it 😆 he definitely challenges my mind
A very interesting book! Thank you for that posting! I'm also encouraged by your library -mine has the same organizational style! Nice to know I'm not alone in that.
Just listening to this now. I have been steeping myself in George MacDonald for several years now. I must confess, to someone, just to relieve the burden of my sin, that I actually said out loud once that George MacDonald was a terrible poet! Please forgive me! Since that awful day, almost as a punishment, I have run headlong into the most beautiful poetry written by one of the most beautiful men. I would so love to sit and talk all things MacDonald with you Malcolm! As 2024 approaches, where can I keep myself informed of the goings on in the MacDonald Society? You mentioned there would be something’s organized to commemorate him.
Wonderful Poetry. Thank you for sharing! Your channel is inspirational, and before watching this video I was reading your book, Lifting the Veil which I’m enjoying very much. So much to learn Cheers!
I very much enjoy your content, thank you! I stumbled across this channel when searching out fellow pipe smokers. Would love to see an episode where you talk about your pipes, favorite tobaccos etc. perhaps even review new tobacco blends - as I’m sure you’d find the perfect words to describe nuances within a given blend. Thanks!
Fr Malcolm, I know these Spells in the Library are focused on literature, but a tour of your pipe collection seems warranted. Would you indulge a fellow pipe smoking priest?
You are the exception to Erich Neumann's analysis of Christianity as a fine religion, but built on repression and suppression. Maybe like Dante we make the descent and crawl over the frozen body of Lucifer with his three chewing mouths to rise. Maybe that happens daily, or hourly, or seasonally? Then again, my friend who had wicked SAD has conquered it with St. John's Wort, whereas he used to feel Tom Waits Novembery in late autumn and not surface until Spring. Wonderful reading, and quite subversive since UK's PREVENT announced that reading C.S. Lewis could lead people to radical extremism!?!
