The train between Gothenburg in Sweden and Oslo in Norway is a great local railway connection. Especially for those who arrive in Sweden by ferry from Germany or Denmark, this is the best way to travel by train to Norway.
In this video I'll start by showing the Gothenburg central railway station (Göteborgs centralstation / Göteborg C), the train between Gothenburg and Oslo that terminates at Oslo Central Station (Oslo sentralstasjon). Of course I also

Via Entur you can also book tickets that do include a seat reservation.
Even though in most situations you should be fine by finding a seat (especially if you're early at the platform / in the train), I've heard some stories that in some occasional situations, these trains might be very busy. Just in case of a tight schedule, don't plan to take the last train, if it's going to be too busy you might be left behind (probably won't happen though).

I'm Australian and my debit card worked in the coffee machine on this route in April 2023, so hopefully it was just a temporary mishap that prevented yours from working. Nice review of a pleasanr route.

Ooohhh, good to know. Somehow if I travel to Norway again (I really want to it's soooo beautiful 😍) I think I'll other routes by train and ferry first, but I guess this route is still the preferred route, so hopefully I can test it out. So much Norway is coming up, by the way, because of this Norway trip.

There is a long upgraded stretch in Sweden where these trains go 200km/h for a while. Most of the line in Sweden is 160km/h max and single track. But all the infrastructure is there to make it double track. If you look at the small bridges crossing small rivers, the only thing missing for the second track is the bridge itself. The concrete footings on either side are already in place. The line also has a big open space next to the track, just waiting for the second track to be built there. The Swedish rail authority is just waiting for the Norwegian rail authority to say where and when they want the entire line to be double track, and Sweden will expand their end.

Good video, but let me just make a couple of minor comments: 1. It should be mentioned that VY is the brand name of the Norwegian State Raulways. 2. VY route RE20 is not a LOCAL route, it is a REGIONAL route (R=Regional). 3. The EMU is the VY Type 74, which of course is a Stadler FLIRT. Type 75 is the local trainset version, which has higher seat density. BTW, has ordered the FLIRTNEX version, which will be the new long distance trains in Norway, essentially making VY an all FLIRT railway...

This route needs more departures per day, at least double, preferably triple, and higher speeds, to reduce travel time and be competetive. Also, since you have ferries in your videos, please also include the environmental impact for those.

Norway has to build new rail with at least 200kph speed. But as always, the government would rather spend the money on roads.

I think more frequent connections like this are crucial. I understand Norway has a rough terrain, so building more railroads isn't that easy. However there are some things that definitely need to be improved.

@@rowaystarco Just like here in Denmark, we'll be spending 42 billion danish crowns (DKK) on highways till 2035. Well, only solution left seems to be supporting the climate damage, either till we run out of gas, oil, and coal, or till a big enough climate disaster happens, that will finally make the doubters realize the urgency of the crisis.

@@Trainviking Frequency is one of the most important thing regarding trains. Also, rough terrain is no excuse, Norway has more than enough money, and many others countries also deal with digging through mountains and other expensive stuff, it's about priorities, not money.

@@ncard00 What makes me extra angry (but not surprised) is that the current left/centre left government were those that halted an important project to reduce train travel between Oslo-Bergen by an hour

Almost only electric cars in Norway.......less Co2......You can also take the ferry from Kiel or Copenhagen direct to Oslo......

I honestly think electric cars are only a solution if they won't be too big. Big electric cars still need a lot of batteries, and because that's more weight, this is the ripped effect. For city usage it's different though, for example electric city busses, I truly think that's great. However a long distance bus, I really think it's better with diesel or gas. Replacing many cars in western Europe with electric cars, that's good for the environment but at this moment electric cars are not the solution. Besides that, they still require more energy than trains.

@@TrainvikingMany drive Oslo Gothenburg instead of train. In Norway 85% of all cars are elctric and the most have longer range han 300 km (Distance - Oslo - Gothenburg). And plenty of chargers if you want a rest and a charging stop. Small cars also have range about 350 km. And remember that batteries from electric cars will be recyled after use. The old Nissan Leafs get bought up becase the batteries have minerals and chemistry than can reuse in new cars and so. Tour busses in Norway can go 300 km electric without stop (in summer). If they can fast charge they could also be used on longer distances. I think train only will be competetive if they are much faster than cars or long distance, like Gothenburg to Stockholm. Train is also option if the drive would be over 5 hours becase tiering to drive so long. I hope the new Stadler Flirt Nordic Express will be a success Oslo - Bergen, Trondheim, Bergen and so. Maybe even on longer night service to Copenhagen too 🙂

Bikes are allowed, first come first serve though. And if there are rail replacement busses there won't be a possibility to take bikes though.

The infrequent service is a direct consequence of the low speed (and hight travel time) on the route. By car it takes just slightly 3 hours, so why would you spend money for a train ticket if by car you spend way less and it's even a bit shorter? For the record Bane NOR has projects to upgrade the line between Oslo and Halden so that by 2032 it takes 1:10 minutes for a regional train to make the trip (I assume stopping in some stations along the way. Hence a direct trip could be ~ 1:00. There are also some improvement jobs scheduled in the Gothenburg to Halden section, so with some luck by 2032 the trip could take 2:30 hours rather than 3:30. Still, it's a bit upsetting that rich and (supposedly?) "green" countries like Sweden and Norway so far have not invested in (real) high speed rail.

I guess this can be improved indeed. The travel time by train might be a bit longer. However, it's not extremely much longer, and the train is also more relaxed (get things done, etc). However I agree on the fact that this should be a more frequent and better railway corridor, especially for country's that claim to be green like Norway and Sweden, it's really disappointing to see that railways are staying behind, the result is that the investments that will be done now are HUGE and also cause a lot of interruptions for passengers. I guess this route should be one of the top priorities. The frequency needs to be higher, and it would be great to see some trains continuing their way to Copenhagen, or af least Malmö as a direct connection. I guess high-speed isn't always the answer, small improvements can make a big difference (frequency is king) and on some parts of the line, small improvements can reduce the travel time as well. I really hope this will be improved by 2032, and I'll be back for another video (at least when I'm still making these trip reports by 2032).

It's not very flat in Norway, so high speed rail development would cost enormous amounts of money, which is not worth it because of the small population in that area. Sweden does have high speed rail. It's easy for France when it's so flat.

Dit komt vaker voor dan je denkt, ook in Frankrijk zie je dit soms en de vernieuwde Thalys heeft dit ook. In Azië is dit ook vaak voorkomend.

Maybe because it was airlines that first made such seating standard. I mean even automobiles had bench seating, just like trains did a few decades ago. All trains of all countries had bench seating (united canopy seating) initially before this individual seating because widespread. So hence the 'airline style seating'. ;)
