It's an extremely strange paradox that everyone knows who Jack the Ripper was. And yet no one knows who Jack the Ripper was.
@avalonjustin

I think the most important thing about Jack the Ripper was not who he was in particular, but what kind of person he was. That is why the analysis of such horrible people is so important: to hopefully prevent more of these crimes.

Perhaps the most intriguing yet frustrating part of the case, is how there were close instances in which he could've been caught. In Lemmino's documentary on the case, in the murder of catherine eddows, it was shown that the place she was killed in was at the time, under patrol by an officer (who happened to have left the vicinity to patrol other areas at the time of the murder). Then to make it more frustrating, the area had been inhabited by a policeman and his family, who would've gotten the full view murder site, yet had slept through the whole ordeal. There was also a night-watchman at the time, who was cleaning a warehouse near the residence. He was within earshot, yet he had not heard a thing. It's amazing how the killer has managed to evade the police and time itself. It is by no wonder that it has remained as one of the most prominent, timeless classics.

Mookies: In reply to your excellent and insightful comment, it seems to me that Victorian anti-Semitism, sexism and classism are writ large all over this case. The Whitechapel police were hampered by the utter absence of any kind of technology AND by their own prejudices against the Unfortunates, who in Victorian times were believed to have brought this horrific fate upon themselves. Dickens' sentimental--and therefore severely flawed--novel, OLIVER TWIST is rife with these prejudices; child sex trafficking in that book becomes encoded into "pickpocketing." The Victorians simply could not have an honest discussion about sex to save their lives--literally.
@maxalberts2003

I think that the "From Hell" letter was the only one that could have been authentic. Some of these serial killers take "trophies" with them (e.g. Dennis Rader, Ed Gein) & it would have been a novel thing in 1888. Not something a med student or other hoaxer would have come up with.

@@codemiesterbeats it seems genuine to me because whoever sent it would have to have known that the kidney was taken and i'm not sure but i doubt that information was widely available that soon in the newspapers. Plus they would have to match up the same side of kidney and from a heavy drinker. Also why would they send it to George Lusk it seems it had to be somebody that knew him rather than to the police or the news agency if it was just a hoax. The killer likely joined up with Lusk's group looking for himself

He (or she, but most likely a he) was the first famous classic serial killer, was never caught, was horribly sadistic, and taunted the authorities… it’s no wonder why the case is still compelling. Edit: I’m not counting previous famous killers such as Elizabeth Bathory or Gilles de Rais, who were nobles and had assistance in procuring victims

I’m surprised you hadn’t already covered Mr. Ripper. Also, in regards to the stench, London had a massive horseshit problem at the time. There were so many horses being used and abused for transportation at the time that it seriously threatened to choke the city. Without really ever solving the problem, London was saved by the automobile which made horses fairly redundant. Unfortunately for the enslaved horses, most of them were killed since they were no longer needed by the Londoners. At the time, the decision to kill the horses prompted perhaps the largest animal rights debate in known history and began much of the animal rights literature that’s still used today.

Dear Sir, This era in London, the 1880s, is a rather fascinating setting if I do say so myself. I believe one can link the following famous names to the period: Jack the Ripper, Sherlock Holmes, Count Dracula, and The Elephant Man. There are more names no doubt, both real and fictitious, than just those four that are perhaps equally as well known - Her Majesty, Queen Victoria for instance - but, if one knew nothing of the original four I just named, and then the reasons as to why they are famous were described, and the descriptions given thereof did not reveal which souls actually walked amongst us, and which souls were mere ethereal phantoms conjured up in the miasmic fog bound minds of London’s most imaginatively gifted novelists, I think their true natures would be very difficult indeed to determine, although, I am quite sure, a very select few, might find it all rather, elementary... Yours truly, Doctor John Watson

If anyone is interested in the Ripper murders, I highly recommend reading "The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper" by Hallie Rubenhold. It adds important context about the victims and examines their lives with more empathy than is usually given to them. It's unlikely that all of the women were full-time professional sex workers. Newspapers (and society in general) at that time tended to assume a woman was a sex worker if she was unhoused or not living with a male partner or relative. It's possible that at least some of the women would occasionally turn to sex work on a casual basis when they were unable to get income elsewhere, without actually considering prostitution to be their main 'job'. This would have been a relatively common practice among the poorest of London who had no other support networks. Alcohol dependency issues were also extremely high among the poorest of London Victorian society. Most victims of the Ripper had alcohol and addiction issues, but these issues would have been typical rather than exceptional.
