In this video I break down the career of Madison Bumgarner that saw him go from postseason legend to one of the worst pitchers in all of baseball… Business email: twr.studios1@gmail.com
I played against him in highschool. This dude was like a full blown celebrity. He threw a one hitter and hit 2 homers out of the stadium against us. We weren’t even bad either…we finished 5th in the state that year. He was just that good
As a Giants fan, I’ll tell you what happened to Mad Bum he got in a dirt bike accident in 2017 and ever since that injury he has not been the same his final year with the Giants was not good and we all know what happened when he signed with the D-backs. It's a shame because he’s only 33 years old but I think he’s done. I’m grateful for what he did with the Giants during the dynasty years and especially in the 2014 playoffs but also was not a fan of his outbursts against opposing players.
Definitely. I was soo mad at him doing that because it was in the middle of the season and he was having another good year. WHAT THE HELL WAS HE EVEN THINKING? Madbum was never the same after that.
I think I'll never recover emotionally from living this rise and fall. Since the very first time I saw him pitch, he immediately became my favorite player ever. And that may not mean a lot, since the first time I saw him, was in Game 1 of the WS, and I didn't even like baseball that much, back in the day. The only memories I had from baseball before him, was the 2011 WS, the one my favorite team win in dramatic fation. After that 2014 WS I never stop thinking of how much I felt in love with his pitching mechanics, personality, and the game itself. 2018 was the year when I got the necessary tools to watch baseball in my country, and I didn't miss a single game he pitch that year. No matter what, I'll never forget him. I hope an incredible bounce back, even that it looks impossible. If he pitch again, no matter how bad he does, I will be there to watch him, even if it hurts, just like all this past years. 😢 Funny that my favorite team, finish with him, my favorite player...
Mine too. I still believe in my heart that he has at least another good year or 2 in him with the right team and coach. This doesn't remind me as much of the huge downslide of Timmy (Lincecum) who was another favorite of mine, I think MadBum still has something left in the tank.
I went to see the Giants in 2015 at a normal matchup vs. the Rockies. Madbum pitched his 1000 strike out And hit a very long home run. Absolute specimen.
I really hope he gets another chance to play. I grew up watching MadBum and Kershaw (arguably two of the best lefties in the mid 2010's) battle it out. It would suck to see MadBum's career go out on a low note.
It’s a shame cause for the last few years he has been throwing Teed Up Lollipops!! I mean he couldn’t even start in single A with the junk he is throwing. Life is a B for sure. King one minute and Court Jester the Next
Royals give me nightmares to this day and my team won the damn series. I felt close to death from anxiety that entire series. Christ I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight now.
I think the league adjusted to his strange slot delivery and his velo dropped which made his spin rate drop. I’m a Padres fan and he was one of the most dominant pitchers I’ve seen.
As a Red Sox fan living in San Francisco, I loved MadBum's grit and intensity during his glory days. Two things brought him down ( in my opinion anyway ). First was he pitched Too hard, Too often. That put an awful strain on his body. Then came the SVU accident. I think if the accident had never occurred he'd still be an above average pitcher. His body just couldnt handle all that stress.
I feel like the fall that started after 2017 was because he messed up his shoulder in a dirt bike accident during an off day before a series with the Colorado Rockies early that season. He was never the same after coming back from the DL after that injury.
I don’t care what anyone says about Madison Bumgarner today, he will forever be a Giants legend. MadBum was a key player in 3 World Series championships and his 2014 post season performances were phenomenal. I wish he had remained a Giant, he has no place in Arizona.
Christie Mathewson and Madison Bumgarner, the two greatest of the Giants greats, at least from a pitching perspective. Marichal comes in a close third.
Something weird in MadBums personal life. He "moonlights" under his wifes maiden name as a competitive rodeo rider of some kind. He's been really banged up doing that, and in 2017 he had a really bad offroad dirtbike accident. I don't think he fully recovered from that. He was only 28 or 29 at the time. Watch his numbers since then. He's not the same. I wonder if he had a head injury or two that went unreported.
(8:46) I'm surprised you didn't mention that the runs scored in Bumgarner's only start were scored because of a fielding error by Bumgarner. I know that takes away from his otherwise fantastic performance, I just think it's interesting that he might have won that game if he had thrown to first and not third making his stats even better. I'm also surprised you didn't mention the dirt bike accident in 2017 as many people point to that moment as when his decline started.
That made me laugh pretty hard. Romo was extremely fun to watch, and the guts it took to throw that pitch he threw to strike out a triple crown winner was otherworldly.
No pitcher was ever better than Bumgarner was in the WS against the Royals. He singlehandedly won the WS. Greater performance than Verlander, Schzerzer, and Kershaw have ever had combined.
He's an old 33. Started pitching in the majors at age 20. He still has a Hall of Fame type legacy. He just got old like many greats do. Other great pitchers have fallen off worse. Look at what happened to Lincecum for crying out loud. At the end of the day, neither will be remembered as a "zero."
Not touched on in the video is that the injury that seemingly derailed Bumgarner's career was him hurting his pitching shoulder in an offroad dirt biking crash in 2017. Players are humans of course, and just as prone to mistakes as the rest of us, but it is arguable that what derailed MadBum's career wasn't bad luck, but rather his own bad judgement in valuing a spot of risky fun over his own health and safety.
As a Giants fan of course I like Bumgarner it sucked watching him walk and sign with Arizona but I mean the team dis dodge a bullet actually I wouldn't mind the Giants signing him back for the leauge minimum
People rip on Zaidi all the time but he at least had the guts to walk away from that bad deal like with the Correia deal as well. He was heavily criticized for both those moves but in hindsight they were great calls. If only he had figured out Mike Judge was playing him from the start.....
Yeah he was great in the most important games repeatedly. Beating a record that Bob Gibson held is enough when that record is in the games that matter the most. Count the world championships and remember what the goal is every season. He was very good if not great in the regular season but he is the greatest post season pitcher ever.
As a Met fan it kills me that deGROM won't get into Cooperstown. He just can't stay healthy and needed another 3 or 4 dominant seasons. 22' was a wasted season and it's looking like 23' could be the same.
Great video! I will just throw out there that Sergio Romo was not the closer for the Giants in 2009 or during their initial World Series victory in 2010-it was Brian Wilson. And while Randy Johnson was on the 2009 team, he’s was more of a footnote in the team’s history that ultimately was just plugging a hole in the rotation for a season. And despite his stats, Bumgarner also went through a rocky period in the minors around 2008-2009. He had a significant dip in his velocity which was recorded to falling to the high 80s at one point. The Giants stuck with him however and the rest is history.
as a dodger fan, i miss the days where kershaw vs mad bum was must see TV. although i am happy to say that kershaw is still shoving till this day , i do miss the mad bum days. sucks to see a great player ruin his legacy.
As a Dodgers fan, watching him those years in SF, I was sure he was going to be a HoFer. Now idk. As a Giant this dude is a legend but overall idk if he'll stay on the ballot if he doesn't get in after his first 2or 3 years of eligibility 🤷♂️. He'll always have my respect as a great pitcher and competitor.
I am a Dodgers fan too, but he should be in the HOF. 3 WS and that ERA was dominant. He's an absolute baby and I greatly disliked how he could give abuse and not man up and take it,, but he should still be there.
I think he blew out his arm in the 2014 post season. He pitched so much so close together and was really never the same He had decent years after that, but you could already see the fall off in velocity on his fastball. Suddenly he was throwing in the high 80s instead of the mid 90s. Same thing happened to Tim Lincecum.
Not really in both cases. Madbum had three more great years after 2014, then in 2017 he had a dirt bike accident which pretty much wrecked his shoulder. Lincecum had a degenerative hip condition which at one point affected his velocity because he generated all his power from the violent torque he placed on his hips.
@@jenniferhamels1176 Kershaw has dealt with serious back issues. The last time he made 30+ starts was 2015 and his most innings pitched since then was 178. He's logged at least 150 IP only three times in those 8 seasons. Yeah, he's still playing at a high level, but injuries have been a huge part of the second half of his career (unfortunately).
Baseball doesn’t exist puts out some damn good content, I watched the MadBum video and it changed my opinion on him not just as a player but an individual as well much respect to him
After Lincecum began to decline and Bumgarner brought his own game to another level, I began to think Lincecum was really good for a few years but MadBum will be good for his career. Since then MadBum's career has looked much more like Lincecum's than I ever thought it would
Yes!! Exactly!! Madbum had ONLY 4 GREAT YEARS.......and that was that. As a Dodgers' fan I'll never get the hype of this guy over SF's true ace Tim Lincecum. Now THAT guy was elite
I am so torn on if MadBum should be in the hall of fame as most of his regular seasons were great, but he was never a favorite for a Cy Young award (though having to be compared to Kershaw was no help) but he usually ended up with an ERA right around 3.00 though he had great stretches of high 1.00's during a season. But he hit so well for a pitcher that he did single handedly win games and not being allowed to compete in the homerun derby was a ROYAL snub. And his record in the post-season might never be replicated it was that unbelievable from 2010-2016 but after 2017 you could see the difference in him, and he never adapted to post injury like Kershaw adapted to his age issues.
My coach wouldn't allow me to throw junk until I was 16 as well. I learned to throw a knuckleball at age 9 and threw it through my little league years. Unfortunately, never had the grades to play on high school but I definitely loved throwing such a unique pitch at such a young age.
The same thing actually happened to Tim Lincecum. He was great for a few years, then the stats completely fell. The Angels took a chance with him, they cut him after a few months with a 8+ ERA. Looking at MadBum stats in 2023, I have no clue who's crazy enough to want to sign a guy like this. The Giants got him for cheap on a rookie contract and never paid him the same amount of money as what guys like Kershaw or Verlander make, but these guys did not tank the way he did either. I wish him the best since he brought wins to the Giants, but honestly I'm pretty confident his MLB carreer is over.
As someone who knew him in high-school, it sucks seeing what's happened. However, he's a heater. With his arm losing velocity, what can he do? I hate I never went to a big league game and catch up.
Mad Bum great postseason pitcher who also had a 4-5 year run of dominance that'll take a back seat in memory to the postseason success.. but for awhile there he was a bonified ace and top-5/definitely top-10 starter in baseball.. but doesn't have the career numbers/long enough peak/long enough cool down period before becoming terrible.
Interesting that the Giants had 3 stoppers on their roster, and within a few years, who all lost their stuff after 6 seasons: Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Bumgarner.
Moral of his story is why would any athlete that successful ever engage in a hobby with too much inherent physical risk involved? I really hope those dirt bike rides were worth all the millions he lost out on.
He wasnt the first and wont be the last to peter out after a bit of briallance. That is what separates a true HOF'er from a very good player. Im sure he will sleep good either way, with his millions and knowing he accomplished things at the highest level, and in the playoffs, most will only dream of.
With a 110 ERA+ in 2200 innings pitched, and around 37 WAR (which includes 5 WAR from hitting), Bumgarner is nowhere near a Hall Of Famer. There are at least 30-40 other pitchers not currently in the HOF that I would elect before him.
Any of them and l mean any of them dominate 3 World Series? Of course not. Regular season stats are fine but the goal of the game is to be world champion. A great season that ends before October isn't that great.
MadBum is definitely a Hall of Famer, 3 World Series rings, 1 of which he single handily took the Giants over the top. When the lights shine the brightest, some big names tend to struggle, Verlander and Kershaw being good examples.
He has no longevity, never sniffed a Cy young. 4 Allstars, 1 mediocre season. And 10 years of absolute garbage. He doesn't even deserve to be in a ballot.
@@YellowBrother Yup. Madbum had some good peak years but they were not sustained for long periods of time. Going solely by post season is not that answer either, otherwise Colby Rasmus and Troy Glaus should be in the HOF.
I know that it would be a huge risk, and making a decision based emotional things could be a huge mistake- but I would bring him back to the Giants with a minor league deal. Maybe he could recover his form. MAYBE he could be a relief pitcher. Now he is a free agent I would give it a shot. There is nothing to lose for both sides.
idk the DBacks DFA"D him with 5 years left... 2020 didn't even count so he played 2 seasons with them and 3 starts this year... seems like they just gave up on him. the DBacks sucked for the past 10 years its not like Bumgarner was the only reason they were not winning. I can easily see him coming back if he wants to for a team that is actually in contention for a postseason run. He shoulda signed with the Braves after the Giants.
Just like all athletes, they must eventually go down and much like his former Giants colleagues like Lincecum and Cain, they went down quicker than the likes of Scherzer or Verlander
@@jacobweirmier430 he clearly hit his prime during giants dynasty era. i dont think we should shit on him personally but fans do what fans do. imo he should retire or a team should gamble. as a mets fan i dont see why not right :^)
It’s a curse unless your Verlander if you go on three days rest multiple times in one season is not worth it at all idc for the w I care for the long term health
Naming Jacob DeGrom over Zack Greinke is...a dubious choice, especially considering DeGrom is far from a HOF lock. Heck, he's probably not even HOF likely.
