Welcome to Cabrillo, set in beautiful Northern California! In this episode, we build the Steel Heart of Cabrillo - a district that turned from industry to tourism to survive financially. Or, rather, some developers did.

ABOUT CABRILLO
Watch the whole series here: • Cities Skylines: Cabrillo
Cabrillo is a city set in Northern California with many different influences. A few you might notice are Portland, Oregon, the East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area, and even Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I'm building my own synthesis. I'm focused on demonstrating and addressing some of the biggest issues facing Californian urban planners and community activists alike: the housing crisis, auto dependency, air pollution, inequality, and climate change, among others. I won’t be painting the picture of a perfect city; Cabrillo will have its share of all of the problems listed above and many more. But it will be on the right track. A democratic force has swept over the city, a force that refuses to settle for half-measures. How will Cabrillans tackle the challenges facing their city and other West Coast cities in the twenty-first century? Watch to find out, and fight for better solutions along the way to make sure your voice is heard.

I always appreciate it when people who design cities give them an actual backstory, it always makes them feel more immersive :).
@bigtown5779
@bigtown5779 3 года назад
Couldn't agree more! The backstory is why this is quickly becoming one of my favorites! And not only that, but the origin of Cabrillo is unique in it's own right. It's in Northern Cali but it's not really based on San Francisco. The inclusion of Portland and Pittsburgh among other city's gives it a realistic, yet unique feel. It's not just a version of *Insert City*
@cathall7693
@cathall7693 3 года назад
Man, this might be my favourite Cities: Skylines build ever. The amount of detail and just the feel to it makes it so realistic. I think it is also a bit nostalgic because sadly in many parts of America those kinds of industrial districts don't really exist anymore, everything gets gentrified nowadays.

There’s so much signature stuff that Cabrillo really has a sense of place already. Columbia City was great, but it didn’t have a unique flair like Cabrillo. I hope the Cabrillo Can makes an appearance at some point as well.

I think the more hilly areas around this tourism district should have some victorian rowhouses akin to the painted-ladies of San Francisco

Good point, I should definitely focus on Victorians for the hills!

Some inspiration from Portland: 1) probably the largest farmers market in the country, and 2) some of the parking lots have been taken over by semi-permanent food truck/stall areas called Pods. Cabrillo is looking awesome!

Dude looking amazing, can’t wait to see how the city comes together! I have an idea for the main rail station, you should do it in a Spanish Revival style, like San Antonio or LA Union Station. Maybe for some history some sort of Spanish mission too
@PresCities
@PresCities 3 года назад
Any asset suggestions for this?
@teepicgamer73
@teepicgamer73 3 года назад
@@PresCities Mediterranean train station 1, by High Explosive Serenade, looks like a good base for the station, as does his Mediterranean Church 2, which along with his Spanish castle and castle walls mods could make a good mission too! He has a lot of buildings that work great with a Spanish theme. I’ll keep looking for more suggestions if you like and comment them here. Btw some good inspiration for the train station would be from TwoDollarsTwenty’s Marble Mountain series

What I really like about this series, is it feels like an actual city in northern california but doesn't copy or resemble any existing city. There's elements that remind me of sacramento and portland and napa and san francisco but its so unique that it feels like it actually exists.

christ, i want to book tickets here unbelievably badly... the realism is peak here. usually the word “vibe” is far overused nowadays, but i can safely say that this city has personality- and a good vibe. (also the formatting of the videos are a+!!!!)

Love your Series! I have a suggestion for the abandoned Railway Line: due to the rapidly rising size of the city, the ammount of public transport is absolutely needed, so the city decided to convert the old tracks to new ones for a light rail/tram line! Would love to see that. Greetings from Germany! :)
@PresCities
@PresCities 3 года назад
Well, the old tracks ran along the waterfront and were simply removed when the city reallocated the land for parks and buildings.

Steel Heart of Cabrillo is a cool name but I feel like residents of Cabrillo would have some type of nickname for it because the real name is kinda long. I think like they would call it something like Steeltown or SHC or like a shorten version of the name instead of Steal Heart of Cabrillo
@kazuyayasui1505

Like for example I live in Palo Alto, and the city next to me is East Palo Alto. But because the name is so long people just call it EPA

I can see it being a good nickname, just not one that's used in everyday speech. More like "the Big Apple" or something. A good name that sticks, but isn't used every time they say the name of the place. In everyday speech they might just say "the Heart" or "the Steel Heart".
@Pokerdude38
@Pokerdude38 3 года назад
Great video as always! Love the Steel Heart and what it represents with myself being from an area with a long history of coal and steel production. I might be a bit late to make a suggestion now, but I would highly recommend checking out Steel Stacks in Bethlehem, PA. It served as the hq of Bethlehem Steel for almost 100 years until the company shut it down and helped the city redevelop the blast furnaces into a center for music and arts. I think something like that will fit like a glove in the Steel Heart!

Looks damn awesome! Had a thought that maybe that hilly area just east of the tourism district - where I think you're planning on doing the city nature reserve - should totally have some old lumber baron's mansion up there, like Pittock Mansion in Portland, OR but an earlier style. Would give a reason as to why the land was set aside (it was private for years) as well as why it's so close to the former industrial district.

I would go here during covid lockdowns when theres no tourists. I live in SF and one bright spot of lockdowns was I could finally go enjoy the little seafood kiosks at Fisherman's Wharf and it was so pleasant to eat some fried calamari and be in the waterfront area without the tourists everywhere. In a world where Cabrillo existed, it would be a nice day trip for me to drive up here and relax for an afternoon and maybe bike along the shoreline.

I’m really enjoying the series so far especially the lore around the history of the city. My suggestion would be to have a college campus near the downtown but to build it as though it started out as a small state college chapter when the town was small on a modest plot of land likely in the like 19th early 20th century. As the city grew in the 1910s and 1920s so did the college but because it was so near the middle of town it was forced to grow wherever it could find land leading to a few “islands” of clusters of campus buildings. Each island was developed at a different time leading to different building styles in each area, with the buildings also forces to be designed around the cities preexisting road layout. As the city went through a redevelopment in the late 1990s the college was able to buy up some of the plots of land to build dorms that serve to bring the areas of the campus close together. The campus is still not one contiguous piece of land with city streets and commercial and residential buildings all around it. But it has developed its own unique culture that is not dwarfed by the city around it. This is partially based off of the University of Wisconsin Madison. Which has a large part of its campus in a higher urbanized area.

Looks amazing as always, small sidenote ; the part where the highway offramp connects to that tram road, there should definitely be two lanes. They would never have allow traffic for both directions to cue up in one lane with the potential to cue onto the highway, especially not near the downtown and in a US city.

To answer your question: I probably wouldn’t; you did such a good job of creating it that I can just see how overpriced and way overly hipsterness it would be! It reminds me a lot of a a district in Cape Town called Woodstock, but unlike Woodstock, it would be in dollars 😂 Ultimately, I’d probably prefer to go find a dive bar somewhere in a less trendy part of the city to pay less for a beer 😉

You cant get a city without an airport, if i we're building it would've added a small GA airport somewhere in the middle of the city that you can see cant expand and is very close/tight together due to residential expansion, like moffet field in SFO with its blimp hangars, palo alto, most of all Hawthorne Municipal Airport, maybe little ERJ's and CRJ's or even smaller with just general aviation traffic with rich uphill people buzzing up and down the state
