From log to spoon, you only need a handful of tools. Here, I’m using a froe and hatchet.

Super cheesy, but you should call your hatchet “Doe”, so when you get busy, you can be like…I’m gonna go Fro-Doe some logs, or Fro-Doe some spoons, work with Fro-Doe, or even…Look what Fro-Doe did!!! Okay, maybe I’ve been a dad for too long, so I take the dad jokes to the extreme! (But hey, at least I find myself funny!)

I do 18th century woodwork. Little of everything, spoons, turn furniture on spring pole lathe, make bowls with adz, etc. Not as fast as she is with spoons. I'll take 4 or 5 hours do a spoon, but I am an ADHD woodworker. Never stick to doing one thing. Fell in love seeing her use a froe (or frow), one of my favorite old tools.

Annnnnnnndd I bought those brick things that make raised beds Lincoln logs cause putting 4 pieces of wood from Home Depot together was intimidating

To be totally honest, while I love all my other Barr tools, I really don’t like this froe at all. It’s insanely expensive for what it is, the blade cutaway near the handle really limits it’s useability and it comes SUPER sharp out of the box, which is not only dangerous, it’s not at all needed for a splitting tool like this. My $5, 120 year old froe that is rounded over and very, very well used is a far, far better tool than this one. All it needed was a new handle and the rust has worn off naturally with use.

You can make some really nice chopsticks that way, but the pull cut where you brace the work on your sternum is very useful for that project, and the fine point on the chopstick leaves quite the bruise

Not trying to be that person, but would be kind of hard to just use a froe and hatchet to make a finish spoon. Both of those tools are more about roughing and would work well -ok for what was shown but would be increasingly awkward the further along it goes.

I said a handful of tools, not just the froe and hatchet. The only other two things you need are a straight and hook knife, shown on the stump ;)

Is it ok to use the sap wood as part of the end product?
@andrewkrahn2629
@andrewkrahn2629 Год назад
it depends on the species, but usually, yeah! It's just a bit less rot-resistant/tough, but that doesn't matter as much for spoons, and the contrast is pretty! Got something you want to turn into a spoon?
