On October 7th 2014, just three years after signing a 7 year, $30.5 million contract, former third overall pick Jack Johnson announced that he had filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. The way in which he reached this point though shocked not only the entire hockey world, but Jack himself...

all young people do. Kids should be taught a hell of a lot more about basic personal finance such as compound interest how credit cards work. I thought this was going to be a video about him being a young kid who signed a big contract for more money than he knew what to do with. Then made a bunch of poor financial decisions and blew a bunch of it but it'd kinda be understandable, cause he was young and had more money than he'd ever seen before. But nope. The guys own parents royally fucked him over and then continued to rake him over the damn coals while he was being the responsible one and trying to fix their mess and start his own family. I couldn't imagine doing something like that to my kid. Like I get they put him through hockey in the first place and it'd be nice if in return he did buy them a house or something but you're not fucking entitled to that. It's his own hard work and dedication that got him to the NHL level.
@evilsciencelab3854

You would be surprised. Many Canadian hockey parents that condition their sons toward NHL careers invest substantial amounts of their own money, and their own ambitions for professional success onto their children. They expect a financial repayment from their "investment." These are clinical narcissists who feel that they literally own their children, as they produced them into being. Did I know about this? Honestly, yes, but I did not know the full extent of how badly the Johnsons blew all of Jack's money. Where I come from, filial piety is considered a virtue, where fully grown children return the favor to their parents for taking care of them. However, some parents (I said some, not all) take this as a form of entitlement that everything their children make, they deserve a cut, using "filial piety" as their pretext. This is especially true for parents who have narcissistic personality disorder, and the sad thing is that NPD can be hard to diagnose, so children of narcissistic parents often wonder why their parents are never satisfied with what they have, unaware that their parents are only using them to prop up their narcissistic needs.

It's bad enough when you hear stories about how players agents took advantage of players and left them broke (the most egregious example being what Alan Eagleson did to Bobby Orr), but one would think that the people you should be able to trust are your parents. That they would treat him like the Jack Johnson Finance Co. to fund their lifestyle is abominable. Granted, he's an adult and had a couple of years of college and you'd think he'd know how to manage his money or should have realized what was going on. He probably was so into his career and felt confident his parents were acting in his best interests, and no doubt they were very convincing with their charade.

Absolutely wild, if I was making that much money my parents would ask for nothing and they would be getting everything, hard to imagine parents doing this to their kid, makes me really appreciate the wonderful people who raised me

Such a Sad story, that a son trusted his lively hood to unscrupulous, greedy parents. Shame on them! I hope he got the beach house back. I guess money is the root of all evil, with parents like his. Congratulations to him on his marriage, and I’m happy to hear he’s with Pittsburg and under the care of trusted financial professionals. Thanks for sharing such a cautionary tale....

I've also heard the reason he went back to college after the canes drafted him was because his parents didn't want to live there

Yea and as a canes fan this was one of the worst draft picks ever. got nothing from a 3rd overall pick which could be the reason why the hurricanes sucked for so long with shit like this happening. Fuck those parents

His parents saw him as a personal slush fund first, and then son second. Terrible feeling that would give oneself. Jack needs to sue them and try and have them arrested, then get a restraining order. Those two people have done more harm to him than anyone else in the entire world. They are literally his worst enemies and always will be.

Jack Johnson needs to do the only thing he's good at..... *hit hard and shoot hard* sounds dumb but he's gotten away from that I honestly believe he can turn around his career if he does that a comeback is not impossible for him

If you want to know of a professional athlete saving every penny look no further than MLB player Curtis Granderson. For the whole of professional sports you have to think about a sports contract (more money than most people have ever seen in their life). Federally taxed as a high earner State income taxed as an employee in (Johnson in the state of California & Ohio) Agent / Agency gets a cut Leasing cars / buying cars Buying expensive houses with high property tax Family wanting money Divorce

You should always trust your parents -- "but never blindly trust anyone" including your parents. I've seen brothers and sisters become lifelong enemies over very little money over estate hassles/ wills etc. When there is money on the line, it turns people into strangers. You need to have lived awhile to understand this. These young kids should go to a school, and be educated on how to find trustworthy and independent counsel.

Had the pleasure of working for the Jackets for a time and be around Jack Johnson. The most genuinely nice and humble athlete I have ever met, and one of the most genuine people I have ever met. Didnt just say "How is it going?" as a pass by greating. He was genuinely asking how you were, how your parents were, how your college classes were going, etc.. Glad he got that, we will say rather generous, contract in Pittsburgh to bank for retirement.

As a Penguins fan I'm obviously glad that Jack Johnson was able to get back on his feet and I think it's awesome that Sid brought him there in order to get him some money, but my god is he a terrible defenseman. Bringing JJ to Pittsburgh was the biggest mistake in Sid's career
