I really hope he gets the help he needs again, he has a very special place in the heart of hockey fans especially me as an islanders fan and I really hope he can get better and get himself back on his feet again
@@joeyoung2728 yea because the team had to play twice as hard to keep the other team from scoring trust me I went to a lot of his games. He was hot garbage. couldn’t even stop a beach bal
I just listened to a truecrime podcast the other day about that murder. They mentioned in it that one of his customers was an NHL player who spent millions on snakes. I didn't realize it was him.
I seen his story before and this is what inspired me to come out and seek help for my alcoholism and my mental help and it fucking help me a lot .thank you robin love you bro
With this year's final having recently concluded, I thought that this would make a great story video: "From Undrafted to Playoff MVP - The Jonathan Marchessault Story".
Oh man, I was not expecting snake farms to come up in this story 😂 I had a nice laugh about that! But in all seriousness: for his family’s sake I hope he can work through this!
It was the snake farm investment financial disclosures in Missouri court that forced him to declare bankruptcy. Not fun-fact: He was a suspect in the murder of the farm owner before the guys wife was charged.
Just because you are a gifted athlete doesn't mean you are a gifted money manager. 1.2 million for snakes? 60 thousand for tropical fish? Can you say idiot?
You can't really count or blame jack johnson going broke let alone bankrupt on him, when his parents basically stole his money & treated it as their own.
I think it’s not a bad idea to have someone control your money too make sure all bills are paid and that you don’t go spending like crazy and rack up a bunch of debt which is easy too do when you have millions of dollars.
Some parts of these videos are very informative and great, and some parts are a tough watch. The narrator emphasizes weird things, like the guy who was murdered by his wife, as if Lehner was in the wrong for doing business with someone who later was murdered as if there was any way he could have known. Almost sounds like the narrator is ridiculing at times, which is not really his place. Anyway, otherwise an informative video. As a high tier goalie, Lehner will probably end up just fine, and be better off than any of us regular people.
Agreed - narrator was salacious and seemed to enjoy, almost celebrating the unfortunate circumstances. The murder has NO BEARING upon Lehner and the whole "strap yourself in" approach to it being mentioned is pathetic. Also, how is overspending on reptiles (as a business) any worse than having a gambling addiction? Kane's story in my opinion was worse, partly because his wife was attempting to publicly leverage him.
He's just smugly reading goalie stats off of Wiki, then proceeds to just read the bankruptcy details, while almost entirely sweeping his personal issues (the real bane of his existence) under the rug. It's a horrendously poor video from start to finish, it's so lazy and poorly researched
Not saying it’s the reason professional athletes go broke, but keep in mind taxes😂Depending on where they live, a pro athlete making $30M could actually bring home like $15M. Plus things like property taxes on Million+ dollar homes. And pating their agents. Again, that shouldn’t make them broke, but it’s something to think about.
I feel for him I’m a former minor pro goalie and suffer from bipolar depression as well as being in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse and I can’t say I haven’t spent a lot on my fair share of bad investments plus have head numerous hip surgeries and injuries and bad concussions… I hope he lands back on his feet
Honestly, it’s kinda painful. Not a rocket scientist that hires a financial planner etc. you should know your ability to handle cash. These totals are pre tax and pre agent earnings
These athletes need to hire professionals that can be held legally accountable to take their money away from them, invest it properly and provide reports on their finances instead of letting themselves fill their pockets with money so much that they blow it all like a teenager would.
he made over 30M and max tax on that is in the 46% range cause he mostly played in the US..please..the guy is a drunk and an addict..thats why he lost all his money, plain and simple..and in the USA? the lowest is 31.7% in 6 markets going up to 45.8% and in Canada it goes from 43% to 49.6%
Easy to say he made 33 million, but taxes take half. Agent makes 5%, and various other costs of living the life of a pro athlete- These numbers aren't as big as you might think.
Taxes don't take "half" with all the write offs he would have used with all those financial dealings and businesses he was involved in. Wouldn't surprise me if the actual dollar amount was less than 10%.
Taxes don’t take “half” that’s not how taxes work. In fact if you play somewhere that doesn’t have a state income tax, for example, vegas, you don’t pay much in taxes at all. Certainly not “half” 🤡🤡🤡
@@stupidas9466 I truly hope you come into that kind of money some day so you'll see how wrong you are. Government is death by a thousand cuts- Let alone the bad decisions that can happen to pro athletes via the people that surround them.
@@richardtherichard26 You do realize that every game played in less tax friendlier states- The athlete must pay state income tax on right? Let alone those years in Ottawa and New York where the taxes are ruthless ( Ney York also has a city tax on top of State and Federal Taxes ). Government is literally death by a thousand cuts.
Wow, I had really no idea Robin Lehner was in this bad mudd deep of debts!!!! I don't want to bash on the guy, but I just can't understand how he can not have any control over his money? I mean if he also have business (witch I would not have recomended due to medical reasons based on balancing his professional career and mentall instability), then he really should have had some overview analytic advisor to better manage his companies and investments. Now it is an awfull mess and difficult to understand what he is guilty of and what his business associates are guilty of wrong doings. But I hope he can get things settled and get his life in order again.
I remembered him being on Ottawa and thought he was pretty dang good behind Anderson out there. Then I remember him being on the Islands but I do not remember him playing for Buffalo or Chicago.
The medical staff of the golden knight must have been aware of his bipolarity...kind of surprising that they did not keep an eye on him to make sure he is getting the proper treatments and medications. Teams usually are very close to their players and try their best to help them out. Furthermore, his agent is another person who should have kept an eye on him. Maybe it is Lehner who did not want any help...!!!
Because he simply wasn’t that good. He looked good because his team around him played their hearts out to make him look good. He’s just as bad as lalime
In spite of alcoholism and depression, I still have difficulty understanding how someone must file for bankruptcy after having earned 40$ million. I wonder what Lehner's IQ is...business dealings are very odd...
You clearly lack the understanding of how badly substance abuse can derail your entire life. No amount of money is safe, 40 mill is not hard to piss away if you live like you've hit rock bottom and feel like there's nothing left to lose. It's not an IQ thing
When you earn a lot you tend to spend a lot, and you have a lot of people wanting to help you with that, i'm pretty sure it's way more common for people who earned a lot of money to file for bankruptcy than for the average earner.
@@85blutch Not sure that this is always the case..I haven't seen enough cases I guess..maybe you're right...I would at least try to cut expenses...but again, if I had 40,000,000$, I honestly would not know what to do with it all...I think there are only so many yachts, so many Mercedes, so many Swiss ski chalets, so many private business jets I could ever use...that all my needs would be fulfilled several times over...
Hmmm. 30 million over 7, 10, whatever years... and bankruptcy? Yeah well, we all got problems, I barely make 30 grand a year, barely able to feed myself...😢 Must be real important snakes and fish.
Tbh if I was in his shoes I would have put every penny away being in the nhl because if I’m being honest he was actually terrible. I think he took his career for granted thinking he’d always have a job but he lasted way longer than I expected him too. He should of had at least 100 million put a side for himself. He fcked him self
You take out the loan, you pay back the loan, not a hard concept. I don’t feel bad for him, he should know better. It’s not the that hard to hire an accountant, that’s basic business practice. Again, he went in way over his head and is now facing the consequences of his actions. He has enough money to hire a lawyer but not enough money to hire an accountant to deal with his money. Gotta pay the piper Lehner.
I do. Yeah he made some dumb decisions but haven’t we all? Difference is that his dumb decisions are going to haunt him for the rest of his life, as he’ll likely never have a chance to make that kind of money again. It’s something that a ton of pro athletes go through, but this dude had some additional demons that most don’t. As someone who got their ass kicked by addiction for a while but has been clean and sober for 7 years, and has family with similar mental health issues-I absolutely feel for this guy. Yeah he made a mistake, yeah maybe it’s hard to feel bad for somebody who had millions as someone who probably never will. But I definitely feel for him.
@@abikuneebus Nah, you’re giving him a pass because of “mental health issues”. That doesn’t excuse his behavior or his actions. We need to stop giving people who have issues a pass. His actions have consequences, no one forced him to anything when it comes his money. He physically did it himself and got way out of control. No sympathy from me and from many others. He made his bed and now he has to deal with his mess.
Tell that to basically 1/2 the countries in the world. Many - especially America are deep in debt - apparently by design. Funny how it has to apply to the average Joe, but somehow not ANY government. How can you shame an individual and not do the same for the govt. of the country that he is living within?
You did not take into account a player has to leave a portion of his salary in escrow , has to pay agents , realtors, etc. so it's really not as much as you would think.
I never thought murder would be involved with the story even though he wasn't the one who did it but only 16 years for that guys wife who killed him that is incredibly easy on them.
He's a warrior that won't go in2 battle so he's not a warrior, this guy would flirt with the ladies while his wife and kid are in the stands glad Buf got rid of him
Buffalo Sabres did right by showing him the door. And as a Buffalonian, we didn't like the bad mouthing he did towards the Sabres and the city after he left. His current problems after his time in Buffalo validate the fact that the guy needs a lot of professional help.
