A few weeks before the closure of the Nelson railway in September 1955 Lawrence Constable of the nzbs spent four days recording the sounds of the Nelson railway. Today I've put pictures to this historic sound recording.
I wonder how different things would be now if the line had been reinstated and extended somehow to Blenheim, as was an election promise when Walter Nash's Labour Party was facing defeat in 1960.
I am not 100% certain but i think the rail line from Waipara ( where the Weka Pass Railway is now ) was heading towards Nelson and the West Coast. I could be wrong.
