Thank you for sharing your story. My son is incarcerated and after only a short time of being in prison he is already a different 19 year old. He told me prison ages you very quickly. He was 18 at the time of incarceration and he’s not sure how he will be able to do the rest of his time. He struggles but doesn’t verbalize his feelings much. He has time served prior to his sentencing, he was given 5 years and has less than 3 years to go. I wish the younger inmates had an alternative to prison. He was put in a cell with another Individual serving 17 years. My biggest concern is always his safety. That box on applications is something that I constantly worry about. I know that is a big issue with recidivism. That shouldn’t define someone before an interview is given. I hope one day that is removed from applications in the future. Everyone deserves a Second chance! Hearing your story and the many other I’ve listened to gives me so much hope that good things are in his future. My family and I have to keep believing these things happen for a reason. I’m sure your family is so proud of you. Prison to city hall…wow that is just amazing. Congrats, good things came your way. I now know I have your story to give me hope. Your story brought tears to my eyes and to those I’ve shared it with. I hope you can make big changes to your community. We need advocates like you to help those with a felony record. I’m so glad you had that 1 person who changed your life. Thank you again for telling your story. :)

I hope you do well during the next three years. Your growth and strength will help him so much. It’s such a painful experience. Its physically painful as well as emotionally painful. One thing that really helped me was I would listen to uplifting talks and podcasts with my ear buds when I would vacuum, do dishes or fold clothes. It kept my mind from the downward spiral that worry takes you. Choose to be lifted so you will be able to lift him when he returns. That kind of strength doesn’t come overnight but over time it will. Include God in that effort. With God nothing is impossible. You won’t be able to control your son’s future but you can become an anchor for him if you are strong yourself. My heart and prayers are with you and your son.

@@karenpoch Thank you for your kind words, they mean so much to me. My days are rough sometimes especially this time of year. Thankfully I am able to talk to my son everyday and we are all surrounded by a supporting group of family and friends. Without them I’m not sure how this situation would be. I really hope change can happen with the younger ones who are incarcerated, I just wish he was given an alternative aside from prison, unfortunately there was so much that happened on my sons case that went completely backwards. Hopefully one day he can write a book about his experience. Thank you again for your support and advice, I will definitely try the podcasts. I just started Kim Kardashian’s podcast a few weeks ago called The System. I can feel every ounce of pain for wrongfully convicted individuals and all those who are incarcerated. The court often leaves them no choice but to plead guilty. We unfortunately don’t know the pain until we’ve lived it. I hope you and your family are doing well this holiday season, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. I always tell my son that. Thank you again and God Bless :)))

@@jenniferp5371 I do think there needs to be some change. In the meantime we need to be there for each other. I missed several Christmas Holidays with my son. I had a friend tell me then when I was pained by the separation that there would be other Christmas’s to come that we would be together with him. She had experienced the same separation. She was right. We have had many more Christmas holidays together and they are even sweeter than before. I know you will have those sweet Christmas’s to come and will feel joy again being together. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas this year and can remember everything will be okay again. Merry Christmas friend!

This is a wonderful story of beauty for ashes! You learned who you are and that makes all the difference. Then you add a brother who was willing to act like one, giving you a second chance. We all need God and each other. When we love and care for each other miracles happen! You are a gift! Such a beautiful real story!

TN won't let anyone run for any office if you have a felony conviction. TN should really revisit these outdated laws and let people who have served their time be able to fully participate in society.
