YESSSSSS!! More videos like this please, of showing how to use these Reason workflows to make SONGS like you just did here, instead of showing them in a vacuum.
I didn't realize just HOW much I missed Ryan's videos (nod back to Super Neat Beat Cheat Sheets). The shorts are good, live is good, but these are GREAT! Thank you Ryan!
Ryan, your videos are the best. Concise, well-produced and memorable. I'm going through your older tutorials and tricks, which are tremendously useful. You're my Reason teacher :)
Agree! If I told you that I can watch Ryan’s videos while cooking, doing my workout… and yes! Even with my laptop to follow up the steps in his tutorials 🙌🏻
Great video Ryan, so good at explaining the creative options for routing all the stuff in Reason. CS is already one of my most-used players (great song-starter IME) and this update looks dope. Reason is (in my setup anyway) finally stable and back to the Reason of old I remember over the last 20 years. Just need to get VST3 and M1 out the door now…
@@ReasonStudios You know that with the recent update to Logic Pro, MIDI FX (like Chord Seq) can now be recorded onto a track where it was not possible before. This saves a lot of time switching between reason/Logic. I think that warrants a short video in itself. Keep up the good work ;)
Hi there, what a great video about chord-sequencer at all. I realy love sequencing chords but with this new chord sequencer there is a big problem: more than 16 bars are not possible. As i play much longer parts of chords for ambient music and "must" use CV- and GATE-Triggers from the chord sequencer there is no way to go. How can i play arround about this problem? To show what i mean is having a first part (intro) of my ambient uses 64 bars and diferent chords for intro and speed set to 90 BPM. Then followed by some tricky variations in chords, instruments, smooth beats and rhytmn that carries the chords and some spicy effect-loops at all. The question is: How can i use chord-sequencer for loooooonger bar-groups to use the CV-/GATE-Capabilities and not to have use a old-style step-sequencer? Thanks for replies and greetings, Volkmar
There are multiple ways to achieve this, but the fastest is probably just to turn on "Rec Source" on the mix channel of your bass guitar. Create a new audio track and set its input to the bass mix channel. Press record and now you have recorded audio of your bass track.
No it is, you just need to update to Chord Sequencer 1.1 that came out today. Just log into your account to update on our site or via the Reason+ Companion
That's from a ReFill that Loop Loft put out years ago called "Everything But Sticks". These days the guy behind Loop Loft, Ryan Gruss, has moved onto Yurt Rock. It's the same sample library kinda company so he might have something like this still. It's a great ReFill for mallets and other less traditional ways of hitting drums. /ryan
Great update! Also, love that Mallets patch from Loop Loft. Is that found somewhere in Reason's vast default loop collection, or if not does anyone know where I might get it? Loop Loft website is not specific about patch names (e.g. "Mallets 1 Big & Wet 65") included in their listed collections.
@@ashleyprincewashington2130 Funny you say that - one of my livestream topic ideas is to have an actual rapper teach me to rap. I would be terrible, of course! But I wouldn't mind looking foolish trying to learn if it helps encourage others to try because they might be good!
Whenever I work in Reason, I hear Ryan's voice! I went through different DAW phases throughout the years. But I have to say that because of Ryan's personality and fun engaging videos - Reason is my number 1 favorite for life!
Ryan’s videos are my favorite: educational, practice oriented, and so full of humor (your rave costume is absolute genious). Think I’ve learned as much of Chord Seq as an 3 hour class. Was missing you here, man! 🙌🏻👏🏻🎉
This is awesome! Love the updates to the player and those were some great tips. I particularly like that idea you mentioned about having Chord Sequncer one control the chord selection of Chord Sequencer two which might have different voicing. That's a really cool instrumentation idea 👌🏻
Fantastic video tutorial, you are so good at this. Reason Studios is lucky to have you, Ryan. Is it wishful thinking that you'll ever consider bundling this player with Reason (not Reason+) or is the era of including good stuff in the releases themselves long gone? As a Reason 10 user, I'm not tempted enough to upgrade to 12 because it has too little to offer. I feel your releases need to offer more goodies and not just be so focused on Reason+ subs. 🙏
Excellent pedagogical approach! Also, not typically a fan of the generally slick type of pop track he was creating, but have to admit it was a banger when he was done. Loved all the subtle little techniques and additional skills/tools he touched on as he rounded out the track, all building off of the themes he elaborated on earlier. Wonderful!
Ok Reason Studio’s, I’m my umpteenth year of using your software I finally have a desire the software hasn’t met… why when I combined this player, I can’t use an lfo or what ever I want to control the velocity via a combinator
Hi, you can do that. In the Combinator's editor, select the Chord Sequencer and find the parameters called "Velocity Adjust". Route a CV input to this parameter, and connect a CV LFO to that input.
They came from Splice.com! Specifically the A section vocals came from a pack called Scavenger Hunt - Future Nostalgia Vol. 2 and the B section came from RNB WAVES: Late Night Vibes. /ryan
Hey Ryan, pure gold as always with your videos. Very informative - I always look forward to your content. I have leaned more about chord sequencer in this video than I had on my own - next question is how you found a great ‘song vocal’ on splice so quickly - I spend ages looking for something other than small phrases ;) Thank You
Well Tim, I wish I had great advice on the splice search. It can be tricky. One thing I use that helps me narrow it down is the key signature filters you see me using in the video. Then after that some of my scanning happens visually by just looking on screen for long waveforms that would indicate more material to work with. I've also tried stuff like search terms that include "verse" or "hook".
Wow Ryan! This is a great vid. Very cool and very helpful. Thank you so much. You cover so much in such a short time. Humorous and informative! Great combination. Keep it up. We love your videos. Sincerely, Steve & Cheri I love Reason!
Jon!! I say this with every bit of sincerity that I can squeeze out of a RU-vid comment's text-only delivery format: That means SO much for me to read and is all I (or Reason Studios) could hope to hear. The work I do in making these videos ends up inspiring myself to make music, and my main goal is to make that inspirational feeling contagious in the video itself. So thanks for sharing that with me. It makes the effort feel worthwhile.
@@RyanHarlin you are very welcome. As soon as I can repair and upgrade my Mac (today) I wanna get beck into production. (It feels like my birthday all over again ) 😂
I think this is one of the most impressive tutorials of *any* DAW I've ever seen. Seriously. It's a fantastic showcase of Reason presented by an incredibly talented musician, and it leaves you eager to drop a quick comment before firing up the product and having fun. You've really made my Sunday. Cheers!
Avoid the waffle and read the last paragraph. I'm loving learning about how to use Chord Sequencer and Reason 12 in the ways that the programmers and designers intended and the ways that my mind creates tangents as I experiment with Reason in general. I think that it's clear that Reason Studios is focusing on the Rack more than it is on the sequencer and - after having watched most of this vid - I've just realised that I'm actually okay with that. The Rack is significantly unique to Reason and that fact should be built upon so that Reason can be the ultimate plugin rather than a lacklustre attempt at the perfect DAW that it used to try to be. After having recently bought Live 11 and FL 20, my opinion has definitely become somewhat swayed because I feel like the combination of their attributes and Reason's Rack plugin's awesomeness is already within my grasp. I had to rewind and pause many times. I'm going to have to slow the vid right down now so that I can follow the steps. At 17:16, I recommend doing the same. Start at 13:52 for context.
"its been 84 years" 🤣 In all seriousness, we're working hard to deliver VST3 support before the end of the year. Keep your eyes peeled for more news very soon.
Looking forward to the NEXT PLAYERS from Reason. How about one that reads an AUDIO CLIP, and turns it into MIDI, based upon CHORDS (or LARGE sets of tones). If you've seen PITCHMAP by Zynaptiq, instead of changing the PITCHES to map to the chords/tones "played" into Pitchmap, it would output the MIDI of those NEW PITCHES. This opens the world of ALL AUDIO to be remapped to any key or pitches and grabbed AS MIDI to use in any way, or edit easily, and THEN put it to ANY INSTRUMENT SOUND. Or, maybe a MIDI sequencer, that lets you PLAY IN any note or notes as a source "pattern", and then apply THAT PATTERN to any incoming MIDI, pitched up to align the input MIDI to the pitches being fed it in real time. If you've seen a Casio keyboard with all its patterns that will be applied to any keys played (adapted to those pitches), then THIS new tool would be the VST implementation of that: LETTING YOU CREATE NEW PATTERS of YOUR OWN easily for applying to any chords/tones, so a fancy pattern sequencer, sort of how ReMIDI 3 lets you use MIDI snippets, but instead applying the pitch pattern to NEW INPUT.
Love these videos and others in the channel. I'm new and like to try to reproduce what's being done - but in this one when I look at the Chord Sequencer I don't see a velocity button, I see 'clear' which is on the left in the video. I'm on Windows. What am I missing?
This means you are still on Chord Sequencer 1.0, you just need to update it to 1.1. If you are on Reason+, just go to the Companion App, hit the Devices tab and press the Update button next to Chord Sequencer. If you're on a licensed version of Reason, just go to www.reasonstudios.com/user/products and press the "Sync All" button to update all your Rack Extensions.
What about 3rd party plugins? Reason is very unique but I need to know if I can use Soundradix plugins. If it is possible I immediately buy perpetual license of the Reason12
This is great, thank you for posting. I wonder, how could one incorporate these techniques into a more musician-like approach to composition? Because right it feels difficult to me to conciliate both ways. I would either compose everything old school or start programming devices, and I always end up doing the first. But these videos are an invitation to keep trying to find a hybrid flow, I don't know how.
Even after using reason since its inception it keeps amazing me how versatile it is, this is a great example of many things, but most of all i love the managebility part you showed here. This concept is awesome and has so much potential. Going to try it out immidiately! Thanks Ryan.
Reasonstudios, if you are reading this, please please give an update about any development or lack thereof for Linux compaitibility. With the upcoming Windows 10 Security update Bonking in 2025, a lot of us wont be able to update to Windows 11 due to device compatibility. I love the Reason workflow...please develop something for Linux...😭😭😭
These are just fantastically informative videos. Really, really informative and lovey entertaining. However, I have a question. I’m new to Reason and am very use to to sketching out songs as a whole. In other words chord ideas etc, and then a cut sheet of 75 to 100 bars. I sketch the verse-ey stuff, the chorus-ey stuff. and before I start recording (even scratch stuff) I have a fairly good game plan. Then the transitions, drum rolls, modulation, bridge, lead etc. Once I have that I can begin to record and experiment. I’ve searched till I’m blue in the face for a Reason user that has a similar approach. I came here cause the title got my attention. All I can find is an amazing amount of folks that demonstrate a 4 bar loop or maybe, if lucky, an 8 bar loop. I suspect there’s more to this writing tool than an 8 bar loop. Do you have a more comprehensive video that demonstrates a “whole song” approach?
I recently saw this video and was eager to give it a try. Just downloaded the update and ready to go, only to discover it isn't included unless i upgrade to Reason +! I run Reason fully paid since v6, with paying for every update since and now i feel loyal users are being left out, put aside and used as cash cow. Come on! How the f*ck is it possible. If this policy continues i will definitely jump the Ableton/FL-ship!
Just spent a few hours after work, reauthorizing and updating all my plugins and Reason apps then watched this inspiring video but now I'm tired - lol! It is inspiring though.
Hahahahaa 😂🤣😂🤣 This video was fun to watch. Even though I left reason 8 years ago to Studio One for my particular needs. I still upgrade my owned reason though. Reason is still a fun DAW. And this video keeps proving that. 😉👍 The rave outfit bit had me LMAO 😂🤣😂🤣 again fun video to watch.
WOW! BRAIN FREEZZZ! THIS IS WHY I ONLY USE REASON, FROM THE 2.0 CRACKED VERSION SOMEONE GAVE ME TIL NOW, ALL LICENCED UP AND EVERYTHING, I STILL HAVE MY OLD REASON SOUND CARDS. I GUESS GUITAR STUMS AND LICKS ARE NEXT AND MAYBE A VIDEO TRACK OF SOME SORT. WHATEVER REASON COMES UP WITH, IS GONNA BE BETTER THAN THE REST HANDS DOWN!
