This is a story of mistakes made. And the hard wrought path to atonement, self-forgiveness, and ultimately redemption.
In a drug and alcohol fueled rage, Chris Schuhmacher took another manʼs life and was sentenced to sixteen to life.
Well aware that he might never see another day outside prison, Chris nonetheless committed to taking responsibility for his actions. Searching for spiritual purpose and meaning, he got sober - and stayed that way. He made amends for his crime, began running and earned a college degree. He even studied software engineering, developing a promising app called Fitness Monkey under the tutelage of The Last Mile, a non-profit program that trains incarcerated individuals for successful reentry,
All told, Chris transformed himself into the kind of person he always knew he could be.
This is his story.
This is AUDIO ONLY from my podcast with Chris, originally published March 5, 2019.

Wow. What an inspirational story of a guy who completely lost his way in the way no one ever wants to and still managed to pull it back so that he can now be a productive member of society. I imagine THAT conversation with possible partners and friends must be such a hard one but good on him for being open and honest with the people he meets and for making the choice to make the most of his time in San Quentin rather than letting it defeat him. Great conversation, thanks Rich 😁😁

One of the most sincere conversations I’ve ever heard. Thank you Rich for bringing us Chris’ moving & amazing story of redemption and recovery. Nobody is beyond hope if they’re willing to humbly surrender themselves to God’s grace and mercy.

To be fair you should have interviewed the family of the Victim/s also to see if they could ever find comfort. Same thing with recovery stories, we should know about how did the drug addicts victims and families fared with that.

How to change: 1:57 Anything is possible, Spend more time in that unhappy place , just to get clear that's what you don't want, then take steps to get to where you do want, because it is possible, I am a living example that a life sentence can't hold somebody down

1:47 The last mile, wanted them to believe in the process, believe in the program, believe in yourself , believe in the ability you can figure things out, when the answers are not so clear, Rich: what is that message? Chris: " That change is possible"

I hope this man stays sober, off drugs, and that stress doesn't send him backwards. I have a former son in law who followed a similar path and then ended up returning to drugs, all a downward slide.
