Hello fellow passionate walkers and other human beings!
Made this little video out of some footage I filmed on the GR11 trail in Spain. Sit back, be absorbed and dive into the stunning beauty of the pyrenees, but fasten your seatbelt - this journey was turbulent.
If you are in this video (and even if you're not) thank you for making this hike an unforgettable experience. Lots of love!
Enjoy!
Music licensed with Epidemic sound (even tho I have no idea how this actually works).
If you liked this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and take a look at the other stuff at my channel ;-)

Hi Helena, thank you for sharing your experience of the GR11. It looks amazing! Congrats for finishing the trail. I'm planning to do it in summer 2024 and I'm even more excited now! I'm interested if you used a guide book for the trail? How did you know about the villages, where to get water, food etc.? By the way I also watched your other videos and love the inspiration for these incredible mountain adventures! The slovenian mountain trail is on my bucket list now 😍 All the best for your future hikes 🌻

Hey Elena! Im happy you liked the video 😍 I used the cicerone guide book and I liked it a lot, it was really helpful! This is also how I knew about villages and so on. But I also used mapy.cz or komoot offline maps to see where villages are or where to find water. Hope that helps :-)

Hey! Haven’t seen a shepherd dog, but my friend did. He barked but he didn’t attack or anything. No bears, just lots of cows and wild horses. I think you don’t need to worry about these. None of the people I met on trail encountered any problems :-)

Not really! At the Mediterranean side it’s generally hotter so I think it’s better to get there later (in my case end of august) instead of mid July which is very hot. Most people go that way, only met a few who went against the stream. Can be more lonely I think. But definitely possible!

Thanks for sharing, I am thinking about hiking the GR11 next summer. How much water did you need to carry on a daily basis?
@helena_hikes
@helena_hikes Год назад
In the beginning I had stretched where I was carrying 5 Liters because we were dry camping. Later in the high Pyrenees, there is plenty of water and you won’t carry as much. In the end it can be pretty dry again with longer water carries. I never had to carry more than 5 Liters and I wouldn’t even have needed these if we chose our campsites wiser 😂

Hey Helena I dont know if you even see this but I would love to know something about the meals and in generel food on the trail. I always struggle with healthy and balanced food on longer trails. Especially because you dont want to carry so much weight. Do you have any recommendations? I am planning to do the GR 11 this summer and was wondering if I can optimize my food preparation.
@helena_hikes
@helena_hikes Год назад
Hi! I do try to eat as healthy as possible so here’s a few tips on how I handle my nutrition on trail: - for breakfast I either eat porridge or granola with powdered oatmilk, that you just need to add water too. I put in some fresh fruits one day after Resupply or on the day of resupply and on longer carries i use dried fruits. - for lunch I like to eat tortillas and on the GR11 I always found some hummus or avocados. I usually also packed out some spinach or other kind of salad but I usually had to eat it within one day. Most of the time it was fine so I had some spinach in my tortilla and in my dinner too! - for dinner I mostly ate something with lentils even though I eventually really got tired of them. But I used to boil them in vegetable broth until soft, added some spices (curry or Asian spices) some of the spinach and some cashew nuts. Sometimes I also ate a bit of mashed potatoes. I found that I really liked a mix of mashed potatoes and lentils. Whenever I was in town I timed my meals so I had a big one with lots of fruits and vegetables right in front of the store. Luckily the food carries on the GR11 are no longer than 4 days depending on your hiking speed. I might also make a video dedicated to this topic soon :-) happy trails!!
