Awesome video bro! My maple saplings have grown their third set of leaves, so they're still very young, but I was worried I might miss a step in developing them as bonsai. Your video has assured me that the best course of action for now is to let them grow freely until the stems thicken up a bit. Thank you!

I grow all my seedlings to about 10 to 14 inches. Then wire them with S curves and different styles. Then every 2 years I pot them in bigger pots. After that I wire the branches and pinch the new shoots back. Doing this process produces medium size bonsai trees that are absolutely amazing. Try bigger pots and let the Japanese maple grow more.

I live in the lone star state and I have a TX Mountain Laurel seed which was part of a bracelet a now deceased loved one wore for years. The bracelet broke so I figured I would try and plant one of the seeds, and much to my delight I now have a 4 week old seedling. I have not seen many folks using Mt Laurels in bonsai nor am I much of a greenthumb, but I am going to give it a shot with some of the tips you gave here. Thanks!

Thanks for covering this topic! It really helps me understand the process and bring me more into this hobby! I think it would also be interesting to do Maple Guide for each species you own because different maples have very different leaf types, color, behavior, and they change throughout the season. Check out Jacob's Aquarium, he does plant guide for every species he carries in his shop and introduces plant behaviors, growth habit, light demand, etc. Maples are so different species from species, and it would be so cool to introduce each one of them.

I have just acquired my first tree. It's 15 years old and has a skinny trunk (I'm assuming bcs they had left it in a small pot.) I decided to put it in a large pot and let it grow so that I can work on getting a thicker trunk. Is it smart to wire it while it's growing? I am also debating weather it's even a good idea to grow it or leave it small.
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 4 года назад
You should wire it to add movement and/or re-position it when you can during the growing season but you need to be extra careful to monitor it and remove it before it bites into the bark. It depends on the design/goal you have in mind for the tree whether you keep it small or big :) That's the fun part of this thinking about what you want to do with each tree!

Thank you, I've just received some maples, not sure how old they are but will try and wire them. I'm just fearful of snapping the trunks. Is there a way of increasing the speed of growth with the trees?
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 3 года назад
It's always exciting to get new maples! The best way to increase the speed of growth is to create an environment to let the roots and shoots grow freely and vigorously, which means planting it in ground with good soil and proper fertilization. People use this method to accelerate the growth and thicken the trunk quick. However, there are some 'cons' in this method when it comes to creating a smooth and scar-less trunk etc.
@rickysingh616
@rickysingh616 3 года назад
@@MomijiEn thank you for the reply. At the moment it is still in the little pots I received it in along with the Hinoki cypress. Won't be able to touch it till at least a week as the ground isn't suitable for it to be planted. I was thinking perhaps get a very large plastic pot and let it grow out in them. I'm only looking to bonsai my Hinoki cypress and just a few maples. The remaining maples I may let grow naturally. 🙏

Hi thank you for the video. I am in the early stages of growing my maple seedlings where they their first set of true leaves but taking a while for the second set and leaves aren’t growing a ton bigger. I have been giving them light indoors and move them outside during nights. Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong. I’m about 2ish weeks in since they germinated
@MomijiEn
@MomijiEn 3 года назад
Hi - Thanks for watching! It's exciting to see them germinate and grow. They love sun so you should keep them outside and have them enjoy the partial sun as much as possible. (but this of course depends on where you live) It may take several weeks to start growing vigorously as they need to first establish roots underneath but once they start moving, they will grow really fast as long as you provide enough drainage, aeration, water, and partial sun :)
@kingli3550

@@MomijiEn thanks! I’m in Toronto Canada and it’s my first time so I haven’t been doing it right after germinating, cause leggy stems and trying to recover most of the seedlings, I was worried about direct sunlight so I kept it inside but I will be trying to feed more sunlight and hardening them off, sadly it’s gonna rain a ton in the next 10 days so I’ll do what I can when I see sunlight thank you!
