When Yan Sun creates his painting “Splendor of Mendenhall Glacier,” he warmly welcomes visitors to a multi-day Open Studio event at Yan Sun Art Museum & Gallery. This artwork is based on a painting sketch done when he visited the Mendenhall Glacier of Alaska.
Yan Sun starts with a blank 24” x 30” canvas and explains some compositional decisions. For example, balance and visual interest that draw the viewer's attention to the various components and their characteristics. The composition has main sections that represent the sky, the Mendenhall Glacier, and the Mendenhall Lake.
He then gradually enhances the painting by adding more details to the focal point, the Mendenhall Glacier, and other important elements. Rich and diverse colors are used by Yan Sun to depict the middle ground forests and cliffs, which provides a strong contrast to the icy areas. He portrays the peaks with varying shades of whites, pinks, purples, and blues, capturing the sunlit glacial nature of the landscape. The intricate brushwork and careful layering of colors bring depth and texture, imbuing the scene with a vibrant and shimmering atmosphere.
Yan Sun later focuses on the foreground Mendenhall Lake with icebergs floating in it. The various blues and grays reflect the translucency of calm and icy lake, creating a subtle play of shadows and highlights.
He finally enhances the depth, contrast, and focal points by making any necessary adjustments and adding details and highlights to bring out the desired effects.
During the Open Studio event, Yan Sun discusses his sources of inspiration and shares his vision and techniques in creating art. Everyone enjoys the conversations and the tranquility of nature the painting presents.
