I suggest watching mount baker mining and metal if you want tips on smelting gold and sliver. He does a lot of testing and adjusting. also he tells you what flux he is using in what amounts. well worth watching for information. If you want a link to Jason's youtube I can provide one.

heya, former precious metals foundry operator (current PhD student looking at gold hydrometallurgy) here. when i came across sulfides on my bars (that silver coating you're looking at) i just added some soda ash (sodium carbonate) to the flux and repeat smelts if it still lingers. you shouldnt need too much - i was using maybe a table spoon or two for a 1kg bar. might take a few goes depending on how much you use. i was also using sodium nitrate as an oxidiser. careful if you use it. it burns hot and bright and will put holes in your crucibles if you're not careful. i found the fumes pretty irritating on the skin, and you certainly dont wanna breathe any in.

Great effort Chris. Thanks. Three points: 1. Ventilation. You were sort of outside... That's good but remember the off gases will be both toxic and corrosive. 2. Flux. From memory I think potassium nitrate added to the flux will oxidize out the lead crushed glass will collect silicates and sodium carbonate will make the mix more fluid when it's melted, helping the metal to separate out. 3. The silver. Smelting won't release this metal. It needs hard core refining and because you hate chemicals, I can't see you doing nitric acid boils any time soon. Love to see you prove me wrong! If you're planning to send dore bars off for refining, You won't want so separate out silver anyway. Love your work. Thanks again for sharing.

Yes Buddy We learn from failure & PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. I have invested countless hours in refining gold from electronic waste Moreover I have invested heavily into a heavy duty melting furnace up till 10 Kg as well as borax (reducing agent NOT oxidizing) and all sorts of crucibles big & small (1-2 Kg) Still I was getting exactly the same endproduct viz greyish or white nuggets instead of a yellow golden luster cast. I was about to give up in despair until I stumbled by chance on your video & you fired me up again. Now I understand what mistakes I have done. RESPECT & Greetings from France.
@LEBANON707
@LEBANON707 Год назад
Sir, let me give you one tip or advice = Send a sample of your cast (nugget) to the nearest lab for XRF spectrometer analysis You will get to know the titer (say 14 or 18 KT) as well as a precise identification of undesirable contaminants (nickel or lead) or else associated precious metals (platinum - palladium - rhodium or silver). and you can adjust your flux recipe based on that. NB Suggestion might also on a raw gold dust sample.

I'm so jealous. You can cupel with an open flame on portland cement crammed into a container using fishing weights or musket balls, but that'll leave you with a PM alloy still. OwlTech has videos showing it. It works, just hold your breath (wear a respirator). I suppose you could just do it in the little kiln too. With the lead and base metals oxidized out it can go to the refinery.

You can remelt it with Borex, it should pull the impurities to the outside of the gold, also melt it a bit longer so it becomes a button that should help, you'll then have to black impurities on outside the button, tap will a hammer and they will fall off leave pure gold behind

One suggestion is to get some kupels and add about the same amount of lead as your gold alloy by weight and just get to the point it molten but not boiling hot when the process is finished you will have at least 20 kerat gold and one more tip before smelting let your sulfides and other gold bearing cons soak in vinegar far a couple days it will break down and oxidize alot of your sulfides to more easily purify your gold

If you have lead in that button you can drive it off by using an flame heavy in oxygen and portland cement to absord the lead oxide that forms. Easy way is to get a crucible and put a layer of cement in it and smooth off and compress with a spoon.

Find a good gas supply place get some proper nozzles and pipes to run off a big LPG or LNG bottle and get rid of those little gas burners. They cost a fortune to run and replace. Can make your own gas nozzles though I wouldn't recommend it as it kind of screws with a number of laws regarding gas fitting. Alternate is the old charcoal/coal burner with a blower to get it really hot.
