Hi Chris, a cone shaped mold would be a great thing for small melts like this and you can make one yourself. Get a block of Graphite, then a small step bit out countersink bit for your drill to bore out the basic shape. Remember your drilling into graphite so your gonna make a mess (grin). From that, if the cone shape is rough, a small file or sanding should help you smooth out the shape. I made my own and I love it.
It keeps going through my mind ... When you're crushing your rocks via the dolly pot, I believe I see small rocks flying out. In saying that 50 years from now after you've moved and someone else owns the property, they'll come in and find it is rich ground from all those little escapees. hahahaha ...Love the vids.
This is a reeeeeee ruuuuuun!!! I'm am sitting on my lounge lazing around enjoying your free awesome content and I DEMAND to be answered by a guy answering THOUSANDS of questions every day. Man people love to write before they read, speak before they listen, teach before they learn. It must get tiresome building this channel in the RU-vid managing sense I'm thinking.
You won't be able to purify your gold as long as you have silver in it. You can add like 4x's the amount of silver and cupel. This can then be parted with a 25% HNO3 solution. However i don't know your stats on purchasing nitric acid in Australia. Here we can pick it up at most prospecting supply houses. A good oxidizer for your flux would Potassium nitrate. You can find it in stump remover at the hardware store, or at your pharmacy commonly called salt peter. Sometimes because of mans laws you have to work around them🙂. When using this oxidizer you don't want to put any reducing agent such as soda ash. Just borax and silica sand. Obviously you don't want to be trying to reduce back to metal what your trying to oxidize out. The fumes coming off you furnace will cause any tools or things made of metal to oxidize or rust. So be sure to do this close to the neighbors house you don't get along with🙂. No nails. Just oxidize the heck out of it. It'll take some lead if not all. So you will be dealing with PbO3 please don't breathe. Good luck! Trying to put 50+ years of experience into a paragraph. Any questions? You can get me back through here. Also, your flux should be at least double the weight of your sample. Many of us prefer triple. You have a chemical reaction in a crucible. Not a beaker where you can add more at your convenience. Peace!
@@richardbeee I have granite rocks weighing 10 kilograms. I crushed them, cleaned them, and I have 3 kilograms left. What is the amount of smelting flux materials needed for each of the silica borex, sodium carbonate, and the aggregate metal?
If you ever make it out to the states let me know ahead of time, I'm in a seriously rich gold ore county and I'll take you into some world class Arizona gold ore and you'll be dripping in bling bling on your way back home stepping on that Qantas Airbus looking like a rap artist right after he signed his first recording deal. They will be calling you Shimmering Dazzle Shizzle Shazzle Bling Bling
I could be wrong, but I thought I saw on Jason's channel that cupeling won't remove the silver. I think some of his buttons from his cupel furnace still contained silver.
A larger smelt. You would add some iron nails. To the crucible. It will cause. Iron oxide. Pulls out more sulphides. Cleaner. But that sample was to small.
Roasting ore can be quite beneficial as it does "soften" the ore making it easier to crush, but it also has the benefit of burning off some sulphides as well which should reduce some impurities during the smelt iirc.
I’ve got tons of gold coming off of these artifacts. It’s really soft, and it’s very dusty. Can I refine that, should I start by panning it? It’s already dust.
What's up 911 hey I live in southern Baja and I really enjoy hiking around and looking at rocks I found an old good mine that goes straight down some 100 yards and in the tailing I found all kinds of dirty quartz can I send you some pictures
I understand why you created another channel but I'm not sure why you called it Spud " ENGINEERING " ! I don't want to sound rude......but when does that start ? If it's just another platform to rerun videos , you can see then , I'm confused . Please don't take this the wrong way as it's not meant to be rude . Cheers
@@SpudEngineering I'm even more confused than you are now . I thought it made perfect sense when I reread my question. Why you is it then that you're not understanding the question about the " engineering " , and when does that start? Fair question considering the name of your new channel called Spud " ENGINEERING "
5 smelting only? You didn't actually count as a gold miner let me tell you something about alchemy it well grow your produce of gold how is it happen you don't like chemicals?!!! 🤷🏻♂️ think again for your goodness.
@@SpudEngineering finally.... honestly was waiting for it. Reap what you sow hey. He's now reasonably upset and salty over a little poetry, which is enjoyable to know.lmfao!!
definitely recommend checking out the channel Mount Baker ru-vid.com or contacting Jason, i bet he'd love to help with tips and tricks on small smelts, he's made a ton of videos of doing them!
