Last year, the Learning World team met Suad Sharif, a Somali immigrant, who was head teacher and principal of a school in Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp. She had big dreams of one day becoming an important figure in international relations.
This year, we visited her again, this time, she has moved to the US.
As a refugee, it is not easy for her to settle, but she is far for giving up hope. Suad Sharif regularly meets with a social worker, who helps her look for a job and figure out how to continue her education.
Despite the challenges, Suad has quickly found children who she can help. Each night, she tutors and helps students with their homework. She’s also just gotten a position helping at an after-school program. It’s all part of her bigger plan: "I really want to go back to school and study and make a difference. Especially for my community, where I come from, girls don’t go to school, girls don’t study."
