From the Archives: Martin Short and Dick Cavett (2006)
Martin Short, one of today's most inventive and popular comic actors, is best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, SCTV, and in the films The Three Amigos and The Father of the Bride. The creator of such memorable characters as Jiminy Glick, Ed Grimley, and Irving Cohen, Short returned to Broadway in the "alternate autobiography" Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me.
Recorded September 16, 2006 at 92nd Street Y, New York.

"Have we done acid together?" lol cracked me up. Quite a challenging interview, but also fascinating in a way. Short's sense of humor certainly helps.

Dick almost went a full 6 minutes before his first mention of Groucho... A new personal best!

"To be purely entertained" is perfectly allowable and thank you Martin for being purely entertaining. Many of us are sick of the culture of letting it all hang out. BORING! Being funny is genius and we love you for it. And Dick Cavett too.

Well until the technology exists to record things from the future every recording will be of the person when they were younger.

@@seanwebb605 I don't think he means zeitgeist Martin Short? And PLEASE administer passive aggression when it's called for? That's when it's funny

Cavett kind of went AWOL around the 54:00 mark. The fact that he spent minutes on a bit part actor from the 40’s that no one in 2006 had ever heard of was sad to watch. Martin Short saved him and kept the interview entertaining. Bless him.

Marty is no doubt one of the most talented comedians of our generation. He is part Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis, etc

Oh yeah. The "wrap it up" thing. Cavett was "subpedestrian," anyone off the street would have been a bit better.

I saw Dick Cavett interview Blythe Danner in 2019 and he was great! This one was definitely not his best. Fun, but noticeably clunky for sure. Martin Short saved him so many times.

This was bad. Cavett comes off at times as petulant(Whats with him lamenting the 'intelligent' label? Short just proved cavett isn't "zany" or "wacky?!")And the note to wrap it up was CRUSHING! This was the early 00's and these two WERE both screen legends at the time.
@ttacking_you

And the mumbling? There's NO WAY they asked him to host another?

But of course Cavette is a legend. But he's more suited for broadcast formatting than long form interviews

This interview came a few months after Cavett lost his wife Carrie Nye to lung cancer. I'm willing to cut him some slack for being a bit out of it.

Well, Well, Well…I have never seen Dick Cavett as an inebriated, incompetent, attack dog before…but here he is. I watched Dick Cavett when I was growing up. I hardly missed any of his shows in any of their iterations, including seeing him in person in N.Y.C. in 1968. Martin (if your out there) you have reached sainthood in my eyes. WTF….

Martin Short is always great, Cavett seems to be trying to compete for airtime. Terrible interview, only Shorts class and talent saved the show.

This is the worst interview Cavett ever did and Short is a great talent. What a waste.
