He should have gotten a full scholarship.Football needs positive kids like this on the field and in the classroom.Hope he sets records on his way to the pros.He is a true American success story.
It looks like he was just able to pull up his grades to a D average to graduate. He had to be at a C average in order to go to a four-year university. So he’s probably at a community college, though there is obviously nothing wrong with that at all.
I've had the honor of meeting him. He came by Baldwin Park HS as a favor for one of our coaches to speak. It is all about heart. Not how big you are. His words hit the nail on the head and I still carry them deeply to this day in whatever I pursue.
IMO I think he should take the JUCO route and then make his way up to D1. There is no way in h*ll no smaller colleges didn't offer this kid, he is a darn good football player. Best of luck to him and his family.
If they dont scolarships for callege in the States maybe they should apply to play in the Tec de Monterrey or UANL search in youtube for : "Inside the NFL Documental BorreGos" for sure a lot of this guys would get an scholarship there. Tec de Monterrey is way beter than the University of Utah
@Sam Houston I have different postgraduate degrees from Europe, The States and México, must of my family also hold degrees from both Mexican and American universities and I can asure you, you are wrong.
This video came up in my RU-vid play list today after watching the movie, McFarland this week. I really enjoyed the piece but was a little confused at the end of the piece when the show's host, John Quinones stated that Edgar Segura had been accepted to the University of Utah as a walk on candidate. I've known Coach Whittingham since the 1980's and was a bit suspicious that he would have made the offer so I started snooping a bit. It turns out that Mr Segura had been recruited by Utah State Univ. as a walk on but they cut him off when he managed to end up with 5 Ds and had to go to summer school just to graduate from his high school. He ended up at Mt. San Antonio Jr College down in LA where I lost track of him from there. Edgar Segura is obviously a good kid and was a nice high school player, playing in a lower division. His ability to play at all is remarkable considering his circumstances living with and helping to support a single mom in the poorest of conditions. My problem is with ABC not being honest with it's presentation. I was hoping for another "McFarland" story and ended up with huge disappointment in ABC and also his coach who was later arrested for insurance fraud. Not exactly Mr Jim White from down in the valley.
This dudes amazing I play football in SoCal playing schools in the marine league and those practices are time consuming and this dude picks up tomatoes still that's hard work!
Even though I admire this guys work ethic, I wanna know one thing, how on earth was he allowed to start or even play football if he didn’t have a 2.0 gpa? In my school, in order to play any sport you needed a 2.8 GPA or higher to play. Hmmm
Fun fact: The quarterback for the red team with blue helmets from 10:53-10:55 is Josh Allen, current Wyoming cowboy quarterback and future first round draft pick.
FUCK JAKE PAUL that was my teammates sophomore year, it’s crazy that neither him or Segura got scouted even by fresno State the closest Division 1 program to their hometowns smh
Im Spooderman we got a quarterback here From Kerman! he's gonna play for the Wyoming Cowboys! His name is Sean Chambers and he just graduated from kerman high!
So Mexicans are not only taking American jobs -- they are participating in the All American game of tackle football as well and succeeding by setting individual records and achieving championship level team play.
If they don't scholarships for college in the States maybe they should apply to play in the Tec de Monterrey or UANL search in youtube for : "Inside the NFL Documental BorreGos" for sure a lot of this guys would get a scholarship there. Tec de Monterrey is way better than the University of Utah
El Tec de Monterrey requires an almost perfect SAT score to get in...it's Mexicos MIT...I went by to check out the medical school and was shocked by the admission requirements...anyways I didnt go, mejor UANL...ja ja y todo me fue bien...ahorra soy doctor en Las Vegas NV....gracias UANL Fac de Medicina.
Looks like he is well fed. I wonder how much his food bill is per month? Also most latinos I know hate american football, I guess maybe its different in California.
He does work out a lot plus food in Central Valley isn't that expensive in Mendota since most of it is local. The markets are very reasonable and most of the workers get the fruit and veg as well, in California Latinos love American football! Especially in the Central Valley. Mostly all of the football players in the high school level are Latinos. I don't where you are from but it is different in California.
+Anthony Uribe STFU because he is doing the interview after he had worked in the fieles in the video he might have had them like years ago and he is not poor, they just cant pay their rent in time
I got to Mendota every once in awhile and I think he is still living there but I think he did play football but for community college And I think He's coaching the mendota football team now as well
✊🏻✊🏽✊🏿 ~ There’s a lot of problems in different racial communities in this country, but it’s hard to look at kids like this and ever be a white supremacist. I’m not saying this is a good life, but it kind of shows you what race has a strong work ethic and integrity to help their family.
P.S. it’s too bad this kid’s grades were so low that he couldn’t get a scholarship. Very unfortunate. And I say that not because he’s a football player, because I couldn’t give a damn about that, but because seemingly he such a good kid who has such difficult circumstances. But this is exactly what the military benefits were made for. He can go into the military and earn enough money to help his family and end up getting a free college degree. Some people say he just needs to focus on his studies and not on being the Superman of the town. And maybe he’s too distracted by fame and girls, I don’t know. But even if he is, it’s easier said than done to change how one’s brain works. I was lucky that I crammed Homework at the last minute and almost never studied at home, yet I made all A’s. There was a time when I was in third grade that I actually was held back though because I was so distracted in class that I didn’t do work and I was constantly staring at the clock and everything else. Though I had my third grade teacher not been a brand new teacher in her first year she could’ve redirected me and I would’ve done fine, but she was a failure as a teacher and I was not the easiest student. But in third grade I went back to doing fine, in fourth grade I had some problems but I had a extremely experienced teacher and she was able to easily redirect me.
