From the Sharpening Bench -- Winkler Knives II F-1: Tactically Different

NOTE: The blade steel is not CPM 154 as stated in the video. It is in fact CPM 3V as its owner Lee informs me. Feel free to snicker and make fun of me as I continue throughout the video to refer to the incorrect steel :)
Here's a "first impressions" video, from the sharpening bench, on a brand new offering from Daniel Winkler and Winkler Knives II. It's Dan's first production folding knife, the Winkler Knives II F-1. The F-1 features purely Winkler styling, materials and design, mixed with some modern features and engineering like a flipper deployment and ball bearing suspension. The F-1 isn't perfect, nor is it as robust as one might expect from Dan Winkler, but it does seem to be a very capable, slickly operating, tactical / utility blade. Check it out!

I own an F-1B (Carbon fiber scales) that I purchased on a pre-order from Daniel directly. Perfectly centered, seriously sharp, no flipper protrusion. I love it. The finish is Caswell. It will wear and take on an antique look over time, by design. That's Daniel's thing. (Check the look of his hand forged stuff) It's one of those "either you like it or you don't" preferences, I suppose. Be sure to oil it. His personal service is second to none from all my communication with him and I can tell you he cares about his customers' satisfaction. Is it worth the price? You decide. Not my first Winkler, nor will it be my last.

Such a great detailed look at the knife. Interesting to see in hand. And you're right, haven't even seen a picture of it yet.

Nice review. Although I am confused by a couple of the terms you used. What you are describing as a choil I've understood to be a finger groove. The sharpening groove you mentioned is what I understand to be the choil. It especially gets confusing when finger choils are thrown in because they blur the line between a finger groove and choil.

I do understand the mystic relation of blade and soldier, sometimes its as much a lucky charm as a tool. This blade is definately a british fighting mans blade(understated but stylish). Big price if you want to join the club. I personally would rather stick to my para2, mention 2 para to 42 commando and they might recall to you a few epic mock battles.As always Rob, great review.

Hi Rob, Great Review as always brother. I have a problem with my email today so I'm going to give you a call later. Just for the record, Dan's only current blade in CPM 154 is the SAR (for added corrosion resistance due to its "targeted" end users requirements) The F1 shown here is CPM 3V. All the best my friend, Speak soon. Grace and Peace, Lee.

You got a look quick Rob! Sent from the man himself! Love the silhouette, grind and spine logo.. wish the pivoting area exhibited a bit more emphasis on strength.. given the rest of the knife has a strong utilitarian construction Also, I love the way you call freebie swag "schwagg" ..great in-depth review as always

I would think you would know that Winkler uses a Caswell finish on his blades, just goes along with the Cpm 154 revelation, really!

i may be alone on this but it seems to have some tenacious influence in it's design.

I'm looking to purchase my 1st knife from him, the $500 dollar price tag, has me on the fence. How does the blade on the knife compare the blades of the WKII line (Utility/ Belt Knife). Can it cut through rope or windshields like he demonstrates on his video? Thanks!
@TheApostleP
@TheApostleP 9 лет назад
Rolando Hernandez Although this is a pretty nice field utility folder, it is NOT a hard use knife. I'm sure it can handle rope or soft media very well, but crashing or chopping through hard materials like glass or wood will not be proper applications for this knife. I believe Dan has a larger, more robust folder coming out in 2015. Might want to wait for that one.

I have a winkler hunting knife. I love it and mr. Winkler. But at that price point why not go for a sebenza?
@LastBastian
@LastBastian 7 лет назад
Because not everyone wants a Sebenza, and some prefer to not limit themselves to one knife?
@rustyshackleford17
@rustyshackleford17 7 лет назад
Nice thing about the knife market is that there are tons of knife at a similar price point. Sebenza doesn't "inspire" me to buy it. Its a simple looking knife done right. This is just one of many "alternatives" to it.

I truly love Winklers blades but this just doesn't do it for me, it looks too chunky.
@rustyshackleford17

Nice to see Winkler keeping up with his tradition of questionable F&F at premium prices. I've owned several Winklers and they're fantastic users. However they all have "how in the heck did this pass quality control?!"
@TheApostleP
@TheApostleP 7 лет назад
Rusty Shackleford I'm sorry to say, I agree completely. On their fixed blades, poor attention to detail seems to be designed into the knives. When you look closely at he surface of their coated blades, a rather horrendous ground finish is covered by a very granular coating. I know they have a certain mystique, but I see $100 of value in most of them, tops.
@rustyshackleford17
@rustyshackleford17 7 лет назад
The lack of F&F is something people uniquely ignore for his knives. I have one of the earlier production, to say it is bad is an understatement. Jimping is skewed to one side, one handle was essentially unstained, tip and plunge was uneven. I should have returned it but for whatever reason I kept it. Seen several deer, hogs, and plenty of camp work since then.
