In 1980, the West Indies were in their glorious pomp with the most feared batting line-up in the world, but Australia still had an ace up their sleeve at Adelaide Oval
I wasn't thinking about him watching the clip and then suddenly he popped up on screen and I said "Richie Benaud" out loud, it must be decades since I've seen him or thought of him, but it really took me back in time to see him on screen.
Viv Richards, what a player. Every shot in the book, including pull shots, played without a helmet. Master-class from the best batsman of the modern era. Dennis Lillee, never say die, picking up the important wickets of the champion West Indies batsmen. DK the greatest.
Viv Richards, what a batsman. Masterful, authoritative. A tier above anyone even today, best since Bradman. Dennis Lillee, simply the best. Could do anything with the ball, the greatest.
@Ayush Singh Bradman never faced pace like Lillee, Thompson, Holding, Wes Hall, Andy Roberts.... But those old school bowlers that Bradman faced on perfect batting wickets did bowl text book line and length and many were expert swing bowlers. Not many good swing bowlers today, but when the ball does swing, today’s batsmen look like children.
Greatest Cricket team ever. The west indies I mean. And I'm an Aussie! Im 55 years old and I hated the way the West Indies dominated us. But now that Im older I really appreciate the skill and style they played the game.
So good to see "Supercat" Clive Lloyd batting again. The West Indies owed so much of their success to Clive's ability to maintain discipline and channel the team's efforts, and keep so many talented individuals all pulling in one direction.
Great captain, great player ..loved in India. Amazing days those were ... What respect they enjoyed all over the world. No team could reach that height of performance and respect.
@@anweshchatterjee7595 Greetings from England. Two of the most entertaining batsmen I have ever seen ,Lloyd and Richards. Have you noticed the boundary is smaller on a modern field? Sixty yards. Those old fields were over seventy five. That is why a six was so rare, and modern bats are allowed to be heavier. Your comment shows you understand what great leadership is all about.
Watching Dennis Lillee bowl is like watching Viv Richards bat. Poetry in motion. Almost the perfect fast bowling action. Michael Holding perhaps edges it.
Wow. Lillee was just relentless. Such an attacking bowler. Excellent line and length, a touch of late movement in the air, then cutting off the pitch. I'd forgotten good he really was.
It was. Then the MCC and its allies change the bouncer and number of overs per day rules to hamper the West Indies. And lately the Indian Board, with that huge local audience, along with it businessmen friends, decided to prostitute the game with an overkill of T20 and year round test cricket. But during the IPL tournament India is strangely exempted from playing any Test series
frankel lamtarra I hate t20s. Now teams are picked based on the format of the game! How stupid is that? Test cricket is the real cricket and all the beauty of the game is in it. T20s will ruin test cricket. I respect those who would still come to the ground for watching test cricket these days. They are the true cricket lovers.
I am from India but I don't like t20 and ipl ...t20 version of cricket killed the technical aspects of cricket and ipl killed the pride of a cricket makes todays cricket just entertainment but before t20 era cricket is about pride to win for country but ipl killed the players pride and making 💰 money is important for them now playrs give importance to various t20 leagues not country for example westendies cricket ruined due to this ....if this happen continuously cricket soon perished from the world ....save the cricket
There was a batsman name vivian Richards,no matter how great tendulkar, virat, dravid, gayle, lara etc has been but this cricketer is still remembered for his batting greatness.
Tendulkar has faced transition periods in cricket... Played in 4 different decades yet so successful.... Don't take his name alongside vk,dravid etc... He is class apart.... Nd viv too.....
Sure, Great people always make things look easy in all fields. Viv can hit a ball pitched outside off stump go in atleast 3 different directions. Mind you the bowler was Lillee, the engine that generates pace out of the pitch. It was stroke play. Tendulkar, Virat have the great comfort of playing half of their carreer in slow Indian pitches - no comparison. Atleast Tendulkar (played more for stat) was though better of the two offering great shots in the cover direction even in paced pitches.
Clive Lloyd was always such a majestic batsman, he made batting look so effortless...would love to see some of the players of yesteryear pitted up against some of the greats since that era, and vice versa, to see how they'd go, circket is such a timeless game...love it
I was at Lords last Friday and the boundary rope is so far in. It's ridiculous. This is proper no holds barred Test cricket. Lillee to Richards - great great days!
@@thylacine1004 the cricket played during the glorious 70's was one of the main reasons why people in the Indian subcontinent got hooked to the game...The sheer joy of listening to the game on radio cannot be matched by any thing today...
As kids we went to the test matches in Sydney in the 70's and yelled 'Roses are red violets are blue, if Lillee doesn't get you Thomo will!' Only now, watching these re-runs, do I realise how blessed we were. Both at the ground or at home mesmerised by cricket on our new colour TV (B+W up to 1976), with Richie Benaud as compare, pure class!
Some of the finest players ever to play cricket. Haynes, Greenidge , Kallicharan, Lloyd, Roberts, Murray, Garner; Holding The Chappells, Lillee, Border, Marsh. A real golden era of cricket.
Can’t believe Viv was playing run a ball inns in test cricket way before people even realized it. Many mortals are still struggling to do that in limited overs with field restrictions.
My dad took me to this game. I remember being amazed when Len Pascoe fielded a ball on the boundary right in front of me and fired it back to the keeper on the full, an impossible distance for a kid. Great days!
Fabulous stuff. Lillee v Richards - the best against the best. Usually when Sir Viv got past 50, you could only pray that he'd get too casual and give his wicket away. One of the rare occasions where Viv was actually got out when in full swing, and only very special bowlers like Dennis Lillee were capable of doing that. If you could choose any bowler to bowl against any batsman, look no further.
Lillee steaming like a Rhino, Richards mugging Aussie bowlers, Lloyd hitting a century and the bird, Lillee picking up the bird, the bird somehow survives, Lillee striking back with four wickets, last but not the least Bill Lawry, Tony Cozier and Richie Beanaud’s timeless commentaries....the first day had all the drama. Test match at its best. ❤
Each era has its own legendary batsman/bowler duel... the 1880s had Grace/Spofforth... the 1930s had Bradman/Verity... the 1990s had Tendulkar/Warne... and the 1970s had Viv Richards v. Dennis Lillee 🔥
I grew up watching Richard and just can’t think of any batsmen in the entire history of cricket who appeared so naturally brave and confident (no helmet) facing bowlers like Lillie, Thompson, Hadlee, Imran etc. if there is any please put in the comments.
100% Agreed with you friend. VIV was the REAL KING and LARA was the REAL PRINCE of cricket. Lucky to have watched them play and enjoyed their game. For me CRICKET was a game only because of KING RICHARDS, LARA and JAVED MIANDAD. With LOVE from Pakistan.
omg 17.35 DK Lillee having a sip of some blokes beer midgame......these 'vault' clips are absolute gold!! As much footage of Viv as i've seen in one place. Also Wiener (asst coach at Melbourne CC i think) came to our sub district club and did some tutoring, great bloke and wonderful coach.
It was his own beer. He'd said to the guy "Get us a beer from the bar will you? Meet me after the game at the Gouger St Fish Cafe & I'll pay you back." During the following over it was done!
I remember Colin Croft saying recently that the West Indies batsmen were never really under pressure in a test match because they knew they'd win because it was rare for an opposition to make over 200 against that bowling line up. Some may remember the first test in England in 1984 when Bob Willis declared and left them 343 to get on the last day. They only lost one wicket in the chase! Anyone watching them during this era would laugh at the current teams being ranked as the No 1 test side now. Wouldn't get near this mob! DK Lillee was the key factor in Australia not being humiliated every time they went out against them. His 4/10 in the last session against them on Boxing Day 1981 is one of the greatest cricketing performances I've ever seen. Viv Richards bowled middle stump for a duck on the last ball of the day. It was sensational!
The pitch looks an absolute belter ! Beautiful soft green-straw colour. ✔ Sending The Windies in? MADNESS. 🤪 DKL showing why he is one of the greatest ever ! 👑👑👑
Over the years, Australia have produced some world-class test match bowlers. And yet in spite of bowlers like Glen McGrath, Mitchell Johnson, along with their current crop of pace bowlers, in my opinion Dennis Lillee is the best Australian fast bowler I have ever ever seen. He could have got into an Australian test side in any generation. And I am a pom saying this !
Well Vivian Richards was just ''one of a kind,'' he cold send the best bowler crying for mother on his day ! To whom could you compare the mast the blaster ?
I'm not really a follower of cricket, but it shows how great this period was because I still remembered the names and faces of so many of these players, even Rodney Marsh as wicket keeper.
standard of cricket in them days was far far better than 2015-20.The Kohli's,Smith's and Roots are no match for what was in the 80,90,2000-2015.The bowing top was far far superior throuhout the world.
I’m so thankful that not only did I see these legends play but I watched them at the most picturesque ground in the world.. Adelaide Oval was just a joy to watch sport at…
Australian commentators are the best. And that's coming from a Kiwi! (Our Ian Smith and England's Ian Botham are also in the same league, along with Henry Blowfeld. But by country it's got to be Aussie.)
Today we have to.put up with Isa Ghose and other women...I am.not sexist but after Richie Benaud,McGilvray,Bill Lawry,Ian chappel,Frank Tyson to listen to today's lot is sheer torture.
@@Oo-pl9zg Not sexist either but theres no good reason for them to be there. Imagine looking at mens pro cricket being commented on by former mens pro players and thinking -women deserve to be in that spot in the mens game and men should give it to them - the entitlement it must take to think that way. Tbh the people pushing it probably arent even the majority of the womens players, its more a political thing.
What great cricket, so many legends on display. But the best was Richie. Brown three piece suit, massive lapels, widest tie I've ever seen, bouffant hair style. All in the heat of the Australian summer. How cool is that!
At 2:46 the greatest gully fieldsman ever: Ashley Mallett. He took more blinders than anyone in that position. Also one of Australia's best Off-Spinners
If you think cricket is played to a lesser standard now, I genuinely feel sorry for you. The windies are a shadow of that great side, but Australia and most teams in the world are significantly better.
The boundaries were longer back in those days and I distinctly remember the sight-screen being inside the field in Australia which was the only respite for those trying to hit straight down the ground. You also don't see any 5s being run these days,,
The Les Burdett pitches were always sensational . The secret was the black clay " bay of Biscay " soil from the Adelaide plains . Also we have lost the Australia day tests these days
Despite all those legendary players and Richie Benaud giving his summary, the real performance of the day had to be the one from the seagull - an absolute cricket legend flying away after that, what a story he had to tell his Grandkids.
I was in school those days. We used to enjoy cricket too much because of these great great cricketers. Really it was the golden era of cricket. Now a days no such flavour in cricket. Thanks for posting. Please post India vs Australia, 1977 test where Australia lost to India after follow on. In this test great spinners of India Prasanna, Chandrasekhar,, Bedi, were playing
cricket was so good to watch when there was passion to play for country, small bats, 100M+ boundaries, no boundary ropes, great fast bowlers, great crowds, lovely atmosphere, no biased commentators. todays cricket is so boring
1. There is no way that Seagull Clive hit 'flew away; lol ;) 2. What an awesome childhood memory/flashback. I remember cricket like that as a kid and watching the Nightly recap (on non-school nights!) of the days play with Richie.
