She is not "natural" on that video. She has layers upon layers of makeup. But the makeup is done in a way so she looks "natural" or without any makeup on.
Hey Jamal, song request here ...:) Could you plz take a look at: "Estas Tonne: the song of the golden dragon?" I promise you wont regret it as this guy's guitar playing is going to make you rethink the way you think about music in general :) Thx!
Prince didn't give her this song. Their label did, without his permission (labels don't need permission because they own your artwork and your persona as a performer). He was pissed that she released this song and it did better than it did when he released it. She made it a worldwide phenomenon. He even invited her to his mansion and scolded her.
@@AlphaMachina Correction he never released the song, he gave the song to a group he created called The Family and it was put on their debut album, but he never released the song at all.
@@Great-Documentaries Frankly Etta did a good job with Purple Rain. I enjoyed it, albeit not as much as the original, because Prince owns Purple Rain. Just like I enjoyed Prince’s version of Nothing Compares 2U; but not as much as Sinead’s version. Because she owns it. BTW, I also enjoyed the original Glenn Miller orchestra (I forget who the singers are)version of At Last, but Etta owns it.
This is HER song, she made it her own. And the shot when she’s crying was real and they didn’t stop filming it and ended up being on the video. This is iconic. Prince is iconic and she is iconic.
This is exactly why Prince didn't like people covering his songs, because people begin to think that it's the artists songs instead of his. People to this day believes this is Sinead O'Connor's song and people believe that I Feel For You by Chaka Khan is her song.
@@JuarezDerrick Everybody did/do not to this day know that Prince wrote this song and I don't believe Prince was what you call a punk. She was able to record his song because the record company owned the masters to his music and they allowed her to record it sir.
@@kaula300 Prince gave her the rights to this song. He was a mastermind when it came to writing music but he could not sing worth a shit and his best song was purple rain which was mid. Total opposite of Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton's I Will always Love you
@@JuarezDerrick I see you didn't know how Prince and Sinead felt about each other. Prince did not give her this song actually he wrote the song for a group he started called The Family with lead singer name St. Paul who's version is the best version imo. She got permission from Warner Brothers to record this song not Prince sir. And imo Prince is one of the greatest singers to ever live the only person who sings better than Prince is Sam Cooke imo.
She was was 23 when she made this song and was very beautiful with those stunning pain filled eyes , those tears at the end were real, her Mother had just died and she was struggling to come to terms with it. She had a difficult and complex relationship with her Mother.
Her mother died in the 80s. She made this in the 90s. According to her memoir she was thinking about her mom when she cried so it was when she really mourned her.
It is.. especially even more so now that she's gone. She was a beauty like Hepburn with the heart of a warrior and the courage only a mother could have. Her mother had mental illness and was abusive toward her, kicking and punching her throughout her entire childhood. But in an interview, an older O'Connor said that she wishes her mother were there right then so she could hold her and love her and be a mother for /her/, and tell her everything would be alright.
@@killmain3919 I really like his version, but her version is on higher level. And she is live even better. Both versions are very good, but her version is one of the best pop songs of all time.
Lut, trust, you just don't know!:-) Whatever maybelline and pantene taught us was a sale, a fact I never knew until a number of Ladies around me went bald for a while! Somehow or another all that was left at the end were them, truth and lascivious men!
Nothing Compares to this version. Her performance is so emotional and the video so simple, focusing only on her. Her connection was that she was thinking of her mom that passed away, like the part that says, "All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard..."
This was her biggest hit. She has struggled mightily with substance and mental health issues her entire career and recently lost a son to suicide. She has always been her own person and is admired for her courage.
I can't even stand Prince's version. Sinead & the producers turned it into such a huge, emotional song. I can't even listen to Prince's version. Even Chris Cornell doesn't come close to Sinead's version.
She has a very hard and sad history with her mom. She suffered a lot of abuse from her and when she died she felt sadness and relief at the same time. This song has a plus and that pain can be seen in his eyes 💔
I suffered physical, mental and emotional abuse from my mother, from 8 years old until I walked away and never went home again after 16 years of abuse. Only last year after more than 30 years of silence I found that my sisters were getting exactly the same.
Sineads siblings and father disputed her version of events regarding her mother, Sinead has had a very troubled life since that time, suffering with mental health issues. She is so so talented but a troubled soul sadly
It took me almost 40 years to flat out tell my mom that she is a horrible person and she needs professional help. I know she had a really messed up life, but that doesn't give her the right to treat other people like that.
I am a child of early 80s MTV ...I think this is the greatest performance in any music video, certainly from the era, She hits so many beats in this video. Just incredible performance.
Her's is the BEST rendition of this song. Her beauty aside, her voice is incredible. You can feel the pain and heartache in her vocals. It is enough to make you cry. ✌
Part of this song she stated she was reflecting on the recent death of her mother, with whom she had a difficult relationship. The tears just after 'All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard . . . ' you can feel her pain through the screen. I too think of my mother, long gone but never out of my heart, and of our yard, lined with the roses she grew and was so proud of - I can't listen to that part of the song and keep a dry face. For those of us that have lost someone dear no words are needed to understand it.
@@mrsheatherteske You got no idea. 😢 Here’s a link to her being interviewed by Dr Phil. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ktw8DSU5g30.html
She put some Irish soul into the song. I read that she just took the song and did it, then worked it out with him later. I've heard Chris Cornell's version, and Prince's, and...they don't compare. Her live version blew me away.
@@sukie584 Cornell's version is a very romantic take on the song, for me. He sings it with a sort of fond remembrance, while O'Connor's version is just full of devastation and heartbreak. She completely sells the desolation of someone who just cannot move on with their life.
Sinead is drop-dead gorgeous in this video! Prince wrote it, but Sinead owns it!!!! One of the best music videos ever put together. She made a lot of people cry. Great reaction.
The director really wanted to just have her face and nothing else but had already spent a fortune shooting the other scenes so thought he should put them in. Wonder how much better it would have been without. Iconic video.
She gets me each and every time... and I can't help but cry. And your right she is very, very beautiful... don't care what anyone says about her... she was always beautiful and her voice is just as beautiful as she is... Always loved her version of this song.
Sinead o conner , THE 1st time i heard this song Jamal , My tears dropped , SO amazing and her NATURAL BEAUTY, To my mom MISS YOU SO MUCH R.I.P. NOTHING WILL EVER COMPARE TO U JAMAL SHE IS A ICON ' WELL THEY PICKED THE RIGHT ONE SHE REALLY BLEW THIS SONG UP THE CHARTS LOVE HER !!!
Senead's version cannot be compared to Chris's and cannot be compared to Prince's. They all stand alone. AND I can tell you another performance that is stand alone. Senead's LIVE performance! Completely different and absolutely amazing! She is dynamite in that one for sure!
It is rare to have three truly incredible versions of one song, Sinead, Chris Cornell and Prince. It must have been at least in part to the sheer brilliance of the song itself. Prince was an amazing songwriter on top of everything else. Sinead is extraordinary here.
The thing that always got me about this video is how she looks up at the camera and then back down, much like she is spilling her heart out face to face with someone she loves. Songs are just songs to many musicians, but I feel she genuinely related to this song and the emotions of losing someone truly came through.
Coz she is or was, she was a very sad being, theres an interview of her telling how she was feeling at this time in her life. Still love her and wish life would of treated her better!
She cries every time she sings this song. When she’s singing it she’s singing to her mother that passed away. So the emotion in it is so very real. For me this is the best version of this song. Thx my brother for reacting to this one. And I would also like to add her voice is heavenly like her beautiful face. Totally agree and understand you taking a moment to appreciate that. ✌️
Yes and, according to Sinéad O’connor in her video with Dr. Phil, her mother was very mean and abusive to her. Yet she loves her Mom dearly and can't wait to see her again. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_H1DsWsKLE8.html
I think of my dear departed mother (five years this month) now everytime I hear this song so I can understand that. I was lucky to have a very loving mother though. In her case, her mother was abusive but I feel like she had mental issues and Sinead understood that and forgave her for it. Very sad, and I think her tears are probably in wishing things had just been different.
Sinead O'Connors Irish tone shines through... Her traditional irish folk music is very wonderfully done in Gaelic... Very beautiful God bless the Irish 🍀🍀💚💚💚👍✌👋
Irish singers are a great wonder. There's something about theIr ancient culture that touches your soul through song and music; both mystical and wonderful. You should visit Ireland!
Irish singing voices can portray pain and sorrow by playing on their "Irish lint" and "Irish keening". Keenig is a traditional kind of waling done at funerals... very haunting.
Been there 3 times, NY mom's family on both sides hailed from there. My mother was a Baird in her poetry and story telling. Something about the ancient Irish heartbeat!
This is one of the greatest breakup songs ever written - the strength of her performance is the anger and frustration paired equally with the sorrow and loss. You can see the hopelessness and bitterness mixed with the love and grief, all at the same time. The end of a relationship is filled with extremely complex and mixed emotions, and I don't think any song catches it like this one.
Not a break up song, not with a Lover anyway. It is her talking to her mother who abused her in every respect, thus the Mama who planted the flowers in the backyard. It is a cathartic awakening. As a fellow abused, she had no way to understand what was happening to her, she just knew she had to eventually get away. Now as adult, she is finally ready to forgive, having dealt with the intense pain, sadness, emptiness knowing that she should of not be treated as she was, she (like most victims) as a child was still desperate for Love from her abuser. You are bang on the anger and frustration is part of her coming towards acceptance, and her realization of all the sorrow and loss she had to go through to become a functioning adult, still wanting Love from her parent, even though the pain given. She finally was ready to forgive her abuser, and become a fully functioning Adult within as well as outwardly.
I watched an interview she did with Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain and she tells him that for her, the song was for her mother who died in a car accident when Sinead was 18. She said, "I always get to spend time with my mother when I'm singing that song".♥
This has nothing to do with the Estate. It's about publishing rights. Last time I checked, they belonged to Sony. So it's up to them to complain or not.
Amen, cause if they didn't, well I just don't know what, but something bad. Cause it's the right thing to do. And well, he was a good guy at heart. A good soul. That's what he wants, now.
Thank you for reacting to this angel who has left us far too soon. Thank you for appreciating her true beauty, (She sang this song in ONE take....BEAUTIFUL.)
Sinéad O’connor has such an incredible voice and this song is such a showcase for it. It can move you to tears. ... BUT... if you want to hear her sing a song that is even more awesomely sublime and beautiful... ... and you can wait til Christmas, then I would STRONGLY suggest her version of "Silent Night".
It's hard to call this song a cover because it was basically written for her. He had every intention of her doing this song as he wrote it. The tears were real by the way. The crying wasn't scripted but she started thinking about her mother who had recently passed away. The tears came and she decided to carry on through them. I've seen this video hundreds of times over decades and she still breaks my heart.
Prince had no intention of making Sinead sing this song. He wrote it five years before the cover for one of his side projects, The Family. Prince said to Susan Rogers that he did not like Sinead's cover and that in general he did not want anyone to cover his songs. Over the years, the two of them (Prince and Sinead) developed a terrible relationship. That said, her version, in my opinion, is by far the most beautiful and iconic. She really made this song her own.
@@kriskelvin5775 It doesn't matter what your wiki says. The original recording and release of this song is Sinead's. Prince started performing it AFTER it became a hit by her.
@@danalynch8889 Yep. You can't "cover" a song that has never been performed or recorded. He wrote it but she performed it first. Most artists perform songs written by someone else. That doesn't make them a cover.
@@mckrackin5324 Maybe you're the one who should drop Wikipedia. The single was released a few years ago, but the song was recorded and released on the B-Side of the '85 album. Do you want me to send you a picture of the vinyl on my shelf? The fantastic world of the internet, full of ignoramus talking about things they don't know shit about.
She was a natural beauty, and a gifted singer. They knew what they were doing giving her a lot of face time. Some faces can pull it off better than others. But I bet she was a handful in her day. Troubled life, and recent tragic loss of her son.
I still wanna cry (and tear up sometimes) when I see this video. Her emotions are so intimate and raw here. She unfortunately was abused by her mother. She added in the “mama” part because she filmed it shortly after her mom passed away. What we see and feel is her pain, but however it’s interpreted by the viewer, we can relate to her from our own painful experiences. Beautiful voice and beautiful woman. ♥️
Way more emotional. Hits the "heart" hard. As an aside, Iove Chris Cornells voice too. Have you ever heard of Anthony Vincent? If not, he's an imitator. He sang Billie Eilish's song "No Time To Die" in Chris Cornells' style. Perfection (imo).
She is a brilliant and strong woman, she has put up with a lot for her mental health issues and views. Her tearing up the picture of the pope live on SNL was brave.
Her mother had just passed and this song took on a totally different meaning. their relationship was very hard on her since her mother was very abusive. Pain, hurt, relief all rolled up in one.
yes she was a natural beauty who knew how to keep her makeup [when she wore it] to a minimum. The whole idea of eye shadow, mascara, etc is to enhance. Your makeup should never enter the room before you do.
Over 25,300 views in 2 days. I'd say it's time for more Sinead! Her live performance of this is electric, and she made another award-winning video to her stunning song "Fire On Babylon" about her abusive mother.
That tear was real. When she's singing about "all the flowers that you planted, mama, in the back yard...all died when you went away"... she lost her Mom when she was 13 and never got over it. 💔😢
I always thought "since you've been gone I can do whatever I want" is such a powerful lyric for how simple and straightforward it is. Especially the way she delivers it in this song like it sounds liberating but you just know that there's a lot of sadness behind it. She doesn't wanna do whatever she wants even though she's kinda bragging about how she can
I was going to say Prince wrote this just as you said it. Not many realize how great of a songwriter/composer he truly was. Sad day in history when he died
What a haunting voice she has.. I think she was thinking about her mum that she had lost, which is why it's so damn raw and emotional... I love this song. Great track. Thank you for another great video upload. Really enjoying your reaction vids. Please try Kate Bush Army Dreamers, or any of her tracks. Thank you from England once again.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I kind of thought of her hairstyle as a gimmick at the time, which I regret. I used to (and kinda still do) scoff at gimmicks, but it worked for Sia, and David Bowie, and Kiss, and on and on. But looking back at Sinead, or Annie Lennox, I now look at their styles more as courageous for breaking norms, even if the deeper reasons for some might be darker than that.
To be fair, many of her own songs are bad. Nothing great to them and if she wasn't known or had a 'look' (or politics) or did this song, very few people would even know who she is today. Just going by her own music, she would have gone away by 1995, which was not uncommon at all. Endless female (and male) singers/bands were dead in the water by the 1990s if not 1980s (depending on when they started and their style). Even Queen didn't really make it beyond 1991. I think she's more talented than most of her songs show, and she has a great voice. Her version of this song is a masterpiece, though. I need to check out more of her songs to see if I just picked the bad ones or not.
I remember very clearly the first time I saw it. It was a mind blower. the simplicity of her beautiful, emotional face literally in your face just pouring those emotions out in an extremely intimate way which was incredible considering millions would see it... just a masterpiece of a performance.
From what I understood was Prince was the type of artist that he could write a song in his sleep. Had so many he'd give them to other artists he knew was meant to sing that particular song
Wayyy cool I Loved that you are discovering so to speak such a classic & hauntingly beautiful song sung by the one and only Sinead O'Connor! ❤️ may she and Prince rest in peace. They were truly magic! Thanks for taking me back to a beautiful time in my life music has that power to transend and experience all the feels😊❤
This song is heart, wrenching and whomever created and directed. This video. Knew exactly what they were doing when they stuck her in front of this black screen just singing the song it was so impactful.
Yes, it’s really emotional and showcases his beautiful singing voice so well. After his sudden death so young, I found a new appreciation for him and a lot of his music.
