The difference between Eddie and all these other guitarists is that he didn’t just DO tapping, he made everyone else want to do it too! He inspired the whole world to play guitar. He made guitar FUN again.

I believe Eddie saw his friend Terry Kilgore playing tapping in 1975 and he saw Harvey Mandel and other guitarists doing it, then he started incorporating the tapping technique into his playing and he developed the Eruption tapping part and performed it in 1977.

As a teenage kid in 1977 going in to high school and listening to what at that time was “ Current Main -stream Rock “ on my radio , then suddenly hearing A “ New sound coming from some band named “ Van -Halen “ was an absolute blow to the head & eardrums . NO ONE At that time sounded or played like Eddy & his band . Period . I was heavily into Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC , etc , but along came this guy just blazing guitar riffs that sounded “ Other -worldly “ and that my friends is what put him into the same stratosphere as Jimi Hendrix did almost 10 years earlier. I call these kind of guys “ Finger print musicians “ because their sound is so unmistakably theirs. Know what I mean ?? Anyway Eddy came along & again changed the course of Rock & Roll music for decades afterwards. Thanks man , and Rest In Peace . 😎👍

Roy smeck is where I first heard tapping. But nothing like eddies tapping. Ed was very unique in his tapping. And Paganini, another huge influence on my playing.

I saw Harvey Mandell in 1974 and was amazed at his tapping. He used it a lot throughout the night. But Eddie took it to another level and made it his thing.

My selfish self still feels ripped off by Eddie's passing and can't get past the fact he's gone. But man it wasn't just the tapping with me it was also that EVH killer tone and his precise rhythms he could play so well, along with incredible song writing abilities. RIP EVH.

When Brian May asked Eddie about where he got the tapping technique, Eddie replied, "Yeah I copped that". What Eddie did with tapping in the late 70's, Harvey Mandel had already played that kind of stuff throughout his 1973 'Shangrenade' album. So Eddie's friend from Pasadena Terry Kilgore learned from Harvey Mandel most of his tapping stuff in 74(75) and Eddie was hanging out with Terry and watched him playing at that time. Back then, Eddie didn't play tapping yet (check out his 1974 home recording). in 2015, Eddie told that he and Terry were good friends, they were hunging out together and Eddie picked up things from Terry. In the book 'Van Halen Rising' Terry and his soundman Kevin Gallagher said that Eddie watched Terry playing tapping. So Eddie started using tapping in his playing and in 1977 he performed Eruption with tapping. Van Halen also performed covers of the songs by ZZ Top and Queen where the tapping technique was used. Of course Eddie perfected the technique and what he did with it was absolutely amazing.

Michael Anthony was just interviewed by Eddie Trunk on Trunk's new show on RU-vid. Eddie asked Mike how he met EVH. Mike said that he met EVH and Alex, when all three were taking "Jazz Improvisation" classes at Pasadena Community College. EVH lied about so much. He never mentioned learning some theory from school. People still believe he never learned how to read music, even though he said he did in his earliest interviews (like a 7-year-old EVH was able to fool his maestro piano teacher), never had a lesson (Kilgore basically gave him lessons after HE'D take one), was 22 years old when VH broke out and so on. Brilliant rock guitarist, but definitely had a lot of issues.

You can read in "Eruption" Edward saying that he saw other players tap, but very simply, even just one note, and that he saw it as having much more potential than players had gotten out of it. If other players had been "tapping" in any significant way, the world and guitarists wouldn't have been annihilated at the sound of Ed.
@karsguitarchannel6088
@karsguitarchannel6088 11 месяцев назад
Of course Eddie perfected the technique and developed his Eruption tapping part but Harvey Mandel played that tapping stuff on his 1973 'Shabgrenade' album. Check it out, great album! So Terry learned that stuff from Harvey Mandel and Eddie was hanging out with Terry and watched him play tapping. So that pushed Eddie to use tapping in his playing.

Tapping was clearly around before EVH, that’s been established. But, Eddie Van Halen is synonymous with the technique, for doing with it what none of his predecessors ever dreamed could be done with the technique. Simple as that. Eddie put it on the map, as few had even heard of it prior to him. The great players, at the time, got into tapping because of EVH, not because of some vague random from the past.

Edward probably did get it from Killgore however he always made it his own.Through sheer coincidence I worked at Dr Music in pasadena and I may have been the 1st person Edward taught to do it.I played it chaotically (on keys)and Edward methodically showed me exactly how he did it...albeit on the 3rd string and only the 1st chord! haha...Its true he didn't like given it way he usually lied because he thought it was funny..He told me he used EB super heavies at the time....total BS....he was just having fun but it was unfortunate about the variac lie.He showed me exactly how he set the phase 90.Another time I was gonna get a hot Pu and he told me how to pot it and said be sure and boil a pot of water first then put the wax pot in it cause it will explode into balls of flames!!!...don't ask me how I know...haha!He would ask me about new effects so I showed him a really bad version of Eruption on that Elecrto harmonix touch pad keys(cause I thought he wrote it on keys he said no..he didn't even know how to play it on keys) then I did a dive bomb with the pitch bar..... hahaha!Next day it was gone then there it was on Sunday afternoon and One foot out.....my two least favorite VH songs....ooops ..sorry
