This is obviously super cool and awesome. But I think it’s still just a step in the right direction. My dream situation would be where we have a Marvel superhero (i.e. let’s say another Spider-Man or some other hero from the comics) who grew up in the US and happens to be Asian. Kind of like how always be my maybe was a rom-com that happened to have an Asian cast. That being said congrats to Simu for helping Hollywood go in the right direction!

to be fair tilda swinton was not hollywood's fault. They didn't want to white wash it. It was actually (ironically enough) china's fault. They were too sensitive to have a character from Tibet (because racism) and they didn't want to disrespect the Tibetans by changing the character to Chinese. i personally thought it was fine to have tilda swinton take on the role. she was great as the ancient one. they even make a joke about it. when dr strange thinks the ancient one was the old asian guy at first.

I heard about the whole eastern Asians, their standards of beauty you can spot from how their actors look, the men are usually very beautiful and pretty, just like the beauty standards in South Korea. Calling simu ugly is hella crazy though, he's a beautiful man.
@NoahxVC
@NoahxVC 5 лет назад
Well the thing about Iron Fist is that in the comics, he is a white character. So it’s cool that people wanted him to be Asian, he is mainly a white guy who grew up in k’un l’un, learning Asian fighting techniques and culture

Regarding the small eye joke. Many people in China do consider big eyes as a good looking feature. But they are not like comparing the size of their eyes to white people or black people or in general non-Asian people. They are actually comparing among themselves cause over 99.9% of people in China are Chinese. And that's why Chinese celebs or actors who are considered to be good looking usually have bigger eyes. There are exceptions though. With that being said, Simu Liu is not actually considered "ugly" but more like an average or above average looking. Like some people consider him hot, some not so much. But in China people want some good looking people to cast in the movie cause this is an Asian representation movie. They simply want somebody who is considered super hot under China's beauty standard to represent Asian people. I know some people may say that is shallow or superficial but Simu Liu to them at this point is just a name and a face. Unlike you guys who have worked with him or watched him on television, many people don't really know about his personality or how good an actor he is so basically the only thing they can comment on is his appearance. I think people's focus will be shifted to the movie itself later on when there are more details coming out. I hope you guys can see this and share this with Simu so you may have a better idea how and why some mainland people felt it that way. There are quite some misunderstanding between the two groups right now and I wish this can help.

Being an Asian person myself, I wonder why it is so important to some that it should be written by Asian writers. I’m just posing this question out there but in Wong fu’s shorts they have white, black, Latino people so should everything that those people say be written by their respective races? It’s not, it’s written by Wong Fu.
@edbrann5768
@edbrann5768 5 лет назад
I agree. The purpose of a movie is entertainment. A writer should be aware of how different groups will receive it, but whiners gonna whine no matter what. A good movie gets beyond that. Wong Fu does that very well.
@carolinet.8493
@carolinet.8493 5 лет назад
Thanks for your response. Yes, I think that the emotions people feel are universal. It doesn’t take someone of the same race to know how one feels, maybe sometimes it helps, but everyone experiences things that exposes them to emotions that are widely felt by all.

About the eyes small thing: that's not a stereotype in China. Like, none of my Chinese friends believe the stereotype, while it seems most of my Asian American friends believe it (or at least think there's some truth to the stereotype). I think it's important to note that even though (or maybe because) China doesn't have the same racial diversity as the US, they distinguish between different areas (provinces, cities, etc.). Sometimes certain AREAS in China are known for certain features (such as small eyes or cunning business people), but there are a lot of the common Chinese stereotypes in the US that are just nonexistent in China as a whole, such as small eyes.

It is pretty much like Crazy Rich Asians as a step forward for Asian American cinematic practitioners to get their voice heard in mainstream Hollywood community. But it truly doesn't have that much to do with China. They could probably just make two editions at the end of the day to cater to their China Chinese audience and Chinese American audience respectively.

Now that I think about it, Simu's role may have been written so he could have a graceful exit. He wasn't attached to anyone, just a member of the gang. Yappie 2 could just start off with the rest saying he got transferred by his company - and how much they miss him. Then Melody goes out with Blake, and...oh, never mind.

MY WISH... is that Marvel Studios will green light Namor with Charles Michael Davis (who played Marcell in the CW's The Originals). So Charles is half Filipino half Black, and what if they played off the idea/trend of Jason Momoa being half Polynesian being Aquaman. So this version of Namor/Sub-Mariner would be half Wakandan and half Filipino. Okay, stay with me... it's not far fetch. In Endgame folks like New Rockstars have theorized Wakanda already knows about Marvel's Atlantis (they talked about an earthquake in the Ocean) and who's to say that this Atlantis isn't a sister tribe or ancient off shoot of Wakanda. Gahhh I need to make a video about this as to speak it into the universe lol.

I am ecstatic for asians of all kinds with Shang Chi officially under way to be the first Asian superhero on the big screen in Hollywood. This said, all Marvel universe movies are only considered a success if they can win audience in Asia, as a majority of revenue coming from there. Shanghai is different from Black Panther, which hails a unifying positive image towards African americans throughout the movie. Shang Chi has an arguably latent rivaling storyline between China and America. The studio has to carefully craft the storyline not to instigate any adversity by vilifying Asian culture, especially the part regarding the China-beloved Tony Leung playing the villain Mandarin (formerly Fu Manchu, a controversial stereotypical figure created by the West). Any serious putdown of the Asian culture will impact its worldwide movie revenue, thus putting Shang-Chi to be the last Asian superhero of its kind in big screen.
