Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! Weird question. Say I have a situation where i only need 8 outputs . Is there a difference between: 1. having 2 DMX gateway to from the console to output to all 8 lights. 2. having 1 DMX gateway to 2 DMX splitter, then outputting from there. 3. daisy chaining the from each light to another. I guess what Im trying to understand is if there is a noticeable or significant performance drop or latency difference between the methods? Is there a best practice to always output from a splitter? Or am I right to say that they are all viable methods and it just depends on how the data is distributed with the logistics of the set? Im new to DMX lighting, working usually on really small budget sets. I usually just output from an Enttec node from my PC, using ethernet to span the signal to a DMX splitter and daisy chaining my lights when necessary.
Very sorry for the late reply! It's usually based on cost or the logistics of the set as you mentioned. It's cheaper to rent opto splitters than gateways. You will almost never notice a difference between any of your suggested methods unless a) if you are daisy-chaining fixtures you can't go beyond 32 and sometimes even at 25-30 on a single daisy chain can cause weird issues depending on what lights you are using because some manufacturers don't implement the dmx passthrough properly. and b) if you have 1000 gateways and they are all connected into ethernet switches that are all in a row - yes you'll probably have a delay from the first fixture to the last fixture in your line because networks need to be configured into a star-configuration not daisy-chained so it's just about building your network correctly. Check out the BIG DATA video I do on setting up a stage.
you definitely could I was just showing that because the opto splitter would probably be closer to the lights you are using whereas your gateway may be further back. Best to have your TX as close as possible!
