The Leafs core four guys have been held up as some great group of players. In reality, they have been totally overvalued. Being good in the regular season shouldn’t be the benchmark for how good a player is. Being good in the playoffs is the real benchmark. By that standard, the Core Four are being drastically overpaid!
Kyper was right that 'owners want winning' ' was too obvious statement. They have to find more depth into their arguments. It looks the owners miss courage. Not dared to fire Shanahan, although his play off track record is close to zero. Lets see if they able to get rid of one of the top francise players. The informative value of the press conference was scarce. Keith Palley talked like a rude business man. They dont win hockey games, coaches do.
It’s simple enough math. Every team in the playoffs has FIVE players scoring 4 times as many points as Marner and Tavares and making 4 times less salary.

Hey guys! Doctor here (and fan of the podcast--great job!) So, the key difference between "headache" and "migraine" is that the latter can be absolutely debilitating; treatment is available (much stronger than just OTC ibuprofen) but may take days to work, if at all. A "back sprain" depends on the patient/player from mild to severe symptoms. Sometimes treatment works. But without more information on the injuries, it's really hard to predict status for readiness to play. The team seems pretty hush-hush on details!
So, none of this is his fault? Teflon "It's on me" Shanahan? GM Treliving better make some strides going fowrard or he's next at some point. Won't be the Prez who hired him.
A complete dog's lunch. It was 40 minutes of saying nothing. "We want to win ... good is not good enough. Unity and chemistry".. blah blah blah. WTF!!! Did this really happen? What did we wait 4 days for??? Listening to three guys dodge questions. Got to analyze.... really? That's code for we don't have a sniff of a clue. The most telling part of this excuse for a press conference .. was when the screens turned off behind Shanny.
THE BUSINESS CASE TO FIRE SHANAHAN: He let Lamourillo and Hunter go; he elevated Dubas; he approved paying the core four champion salaries before they proved they can be champs; he hired Keefe who hadn’t coached a single NHL game in his career; they’ve won 1 round in 10 years under his leadership, many of those first round upsets tanking against Columbus and Montreal. He needs to be FIRED. He won cups, gold, etc. He is incompetent as an NHL president.
After careful deliberation, Shanahan has been here for a long time. It seems that we, as fans, have to trust that Brendan is sharp, and has been spoken to.

Shanahan, 18:15 "by all accounts a good guy" He started dating his wife while she was married to a teammate! He was a great player, but he hasn't done anything as president, and he approved everything (trades, signings, etc.).
@@tonyc8752It was Shanahan that doled out no-trade clauses like candy which has handcuffed the team. It was Shanahan who insisted, for 9 years straight, that "my plan is working, we're right there." And it was Shanahan in charge of a decade of failure. He said it himself: he's accountable for failure. He should have been let go the same day as Keefe. If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got. Shanahan has to go. Anything less is yet another failure.
@@scribbler60 Shanahan took them from consistently a last place team, to a consistent 100 point team. Yeah, you should cry more. This is why most players hate Toronto and don't want to play for them. Even players that grew up in Toronto. Just an unfriendly, no-win situation for anyone that goes to the Leafs' organization. Not a whole lot of confidence with Shannahan at the helm. I don’t think he should be answering player related questions unless he wants to call himself GM… which let’s be real, he’s definitely the true GM. Dubas had to run trades by him and I’m sure Treliving might be doing some of the same. I’d love to see some legitimate big moves this summer but hopefully not one like the Huberdeau/Tkatchuk debacle. I do feel like some of that was bad luck for Calgary how Huberdeau came in the way he did… but here comes a second crack at getting a big trade right. I’d like to see marner moved as much as the next guy, this last season he seemed to be very much so diss engaged from the team…and perhaps the game. That being said, he’s still a hell of a talent…best he getting back multiple 1sts with prospects for him that you can flip OR multiple high end players (2 top d or 1 top d and top 6 forward…) JT I’m disappointed but completely understand potentially buying him out and changing leadership in the room.

What is Quenneville‘ crime that disqualifies him as an excellent candidate to be reinstated as a coach back in the NHL? People in Toronto, who think he carries too much baggage to be back in a coaching position, especially with Toronto, these people behave like they are saints and have done nothing wrong in their lives ever. it shows a significant lack of grace… No wonder the championship eludes this team if this is the attitude amongst the fans. I say this, not as an outsider, but as a leaf fan myself.

I just wish Matthews, Marner, Willy and JT would show more emotion..you can kinda tell how disappointed Mo is and how bad he wants it. Morgan should have been named Captain before Tavares imo and I'll never change my mind on that. Look at Brady Tkachuk in Ottawa..of the ice, comes out and point blank says he's sick and tired of losing..on the ice, backs that statement up by leaving it all on the ice and plays with his heart on his sleeve while leading by example. Hitting, fighting, scoring goals..that type of attitude is what the Leafs need throughout the entire organization, from top to bottom. Maybe then, they will find playoff success.

The LEafs have FINALLY figured what FLorida and Vegas figured out a few years ago .You dont NEED superstars to win in the playoffs .you dont NEED a 69 goal reg season scorer to win in the playoffs .What you need is 18 hard working guys ,that finish their checks ,take care of their own end and capitalize on the opponents mistakes .( the goaltending can be average to above average ) BLOW IT UP and copy Vegas's blueprint
Toronto fans burn their jerseys only to purchase new ones the next season. The organization will continue with the lipstick on a pig management until further notice. Leafs fans deserve this.

I disagree with 99% of my fellow Leafs fans when they want to blow up the core! The one consistent since 1967 is that the Leafs (unlike other teams) lose patience quickly with their players and trade them away. Other teams have players who have played their entire careers or 15+ years with their team. Who on Toronto has 15+ years with the Leafs? It’s a short list. The Leafs have not been blown out in any series since 2017. They have been close. Key issues: 1) Keep Mitch Marner. He has value. Find it. 9.0 million is my ceiling with him next year. If he wants more - cut him loose. Leafs fans want the core blown up. I don’t. Over the years Leafs fans have rode many of their players out of town. “They suck and will never win a cup” they said. AND THEN THEY WIN THE CUP! ELSEWHERE. Larry Murphy, Nazem Kadri, Lanny McDonald, Tyler Bozak and notably Phil Kessell. Am I missing anyone? Marner has value on this team at the proper price. PRICE is the key issue. 2) Keep John Tavares. He has value. 5.0 million / 2 year deal is my ceiling. If he wants more - cut him loose. There is an 8-million-dollar savings IF they both stay and even more if they leave. 3) Keep Simon Benoit & Jake McCabe. These guys battle and are warriors. They dove in front of many pucks these playoffs. 4) The Leafs need a goalie. Woll IMO plays like a starter but is better as a backup due to his injuries. 5) They need DRAFT PICKS. For a while they drafted well but starting in 2016 their drafts have sucked. Drafting Matthews in 2016 was easy. But with the 31st pick they selected Korschkov. WTF. The second they made it I knew it was a horrible pick. They just wasted it. They selected Rodion Amirov who was another reach (RIP). He was no where near the best pick at 15. They got Knies at 57. Thumbs up. But their selections overall have sucked lately and Dubas traded away most of their picks! 6) Resign Max Domi on a 2 year 3million deal. 7) Make Auston Matthews or Morgan Reilly the Captain. 8)
he LEafs do not have to get VALUE back for Marner in a trade .The VALUE is the Cap space that they gain ( a couple of " cant miss" defence prospects and a 1st round pick would do it ) .As long as we waives and you get his cap hit off the books that is the name of the game .The UFA pool this summer is full of guys that have been absolute BEASTS in the playoffs recently ( Montour ,Marchesault,Stamkos ,Reinhart and Toffoli just to name a few ) One or more of these guys on the Leafs could carry them over the playoff hump

You notice how the statement was only to win. Not win the cup. Just to win. You take a look at the Rangers, or Carolina, or Dalls, or Vancouver, right now - we are nowhere even close to competing night after night with teams that have a commitment to winning and winning the cup. We want to just win. So, we don't have to realize that we have no chance at the cup whatsoever.

ANY smart fan knew in 2018 that JT was the wrong move because of his placid mentality and that wasn't the position that needed filling. Dubas overspent, even if there WAS a cap rise it was an overspend on the wrong position when you had Kadri at 4.5. We've been watching the consequences since. Silly fans have been 'beleafing' year after year after year, and the media is what pumps up those beleafs. MLSE makes MORE money EVERY year despite NO PROGRESS towards a cup. let that sink in. FK MLSE. They are traitors. Shanahan should have been fired after the MTL series if not the COL series and one of the core should have been dealt for a replacement for Reilly. We've not had a reliable goalie in all this time either.
Toronto's Traded away and missed on several 1st round picks in the last few years... REALLY hurts their lineup. Lilij was a 1st rounder and if they saw 1st round skill/potentual in him, he needs to be at least a regular in the lineup, if not soon to be part of the new core. Bawston's done an excellent job at bringing in people who used to be depth in other orgs and made them prominent, like Coyle, Zacha, Lindholm, Hall, Bert

I've heard people say if Rod Brindamour leaves Carolina the Leafs should go after him..with all due respect to him, and i like him, seems like a great guy and a good coach, but what has he won as a head coach? A round or 2, but quite honestly, i don't think hes the guy for the Job. Personally, the top two coaches i would be considering if i was the Leafs management..Craig Berube first and if that don't work out.. Gerard Gallant as a fall back option. I also like coach Q.. always liked him..but idk what his status is or if he would be a good fit....one hell of a coach though and i dont care what people think about him from that incident in Chicago..thats completely irrelevant when it comes to the experience and ability he has as a head coach. Maybe its time to piss people off or atleast make a few unpopular decisions if they want to win.

Yeah he's responsible for Kadri getting suspended twice, 3 years of covid and flat cap, only series to be the favorite in and lose Tavares in 1st game and than Muzzin. It's his fault Muzzin got hurt again the following year. It's his fault Nylander, Mattews and Woll got injured this year. How dare he go the distance in every series only to get eliminated by the higher ranked team all year. What a jackass that he didn't pull off the upset! I really could go on. Star players never played better than regular season under his leadership Never adapted to the other coach shutting down his players Entire playoff games where the team didn’t show up including critical games Lost every game 7 Lost to objectively worse teams Blew a 3-1 series lead His only winning series required 3 OT wins on shaky goaltending I am watching Florida light up Boston goaltending while Leafs had one game they scores more than 2 goals… flipping ridiculous. Need I keep going or is that enough evidence for you that this coach was not the answer??
How on earth could a young player "run through a wall" for Quenneville given what happened. How could you be 100% comfortable that guy would have your back? I think that's the worst coaching decision they could make.
President gives direction to the general manager the general manager makes the decision of who is signed drafted etc . The coach works with what he is given. Ya really think they got rid of the right person?

Next year is ALWAYS going to be different in leaf land. MLSC just has to change ONE thing every year and leaf fans jump back on the bandwagon. As long as fans keep buying tickets and merch, the leaf's will never win anything.

If they make a great move like Ujiri did with DeRozan and get a package, if not a different style of player but at the same level as say Marner back, and it has positive rewards. Then yes Shanny and Treliving would and should get an atta boy! Just like Masai did.

What MLSE brass, along with Pelley need to understand is that the Maple Leaf brand will sell whethey they're good or bad! Not saying Shanahan is a genius or a goof, but he's a far more intelligent mind in the hockey world than the entire MLSE board put together! Kyper is right sure saying that "winning is the top priority and the only thing that matters!" is the right words but we're beyond that. Its now about results. We as fans expect this Toronto group whether it stays as it is, or even if a core 4 piece is moved, that the remaining pieces of what this group has been built on, gets into the playoffs. But we're bored of that if this is "the bar" of what is expected. If their idea was to wait for the teams they can't beat now to age out to where they have easier runs, was their idea. Well, the Boston's out there have a decent young group already stepping in to take over for the Bergerons and Marchand types. So that concept may never pan out the way they hoped. So rather than wait for those opportunities, force it! This is NOT a playoff team. It's shown that a few years ago already. So before the whole nucleus of this team either ages out or simply gets tired of the scrutiny for being pathetic in the playoffs, seize this moment! Get out of the way and let the hockey side of management make the tough decisions, and take a chance or two of making a significant move to change this identity before this whole opportunity is pissed away!

Remember that NHL gambling scandal "operation slapshot" Guys who were involved are coaching in league. Green and Tocchet. Horrible story back in the day. I dont trust the leafs at all . I WOULD BET a scandal with them. I will never spend a cent or watch this team again! ZERO TRUST IN PLAYERS!
Shocking to believe Shanahan played the way he did and the Leafs play they way they play in the playoffs. Rookie NHL GM(Dubas), rookie NHL coach(Keefe), all hired by an inexperienced NHL team president to win a championship. Makes sense. First misstep, hired coach(Babcock) before GM! Typical top executive; zero results, keep your job and be rewarded handsomely. Perhaps the right coach can get some accountability injected into the team (missing until 3 months ago, and in game 1&4 of the playoffs), some effective structure, and maybe some north-south hockey. Perimeter play and perimeter leadership needs to go.
More shots at Matthews by Kyper. Nothing he says about any other player on the Leafs is going to change the fact that Marner is the odd man out. The weakest link when it comes to Matthews and Nylander. When Shanny said “patterns” he was taking about Marner. He will be gone this off-season or the year after at the latest.

Keep Keefe far away from NJ. Woodcroft 1 times pass the 2nd round, berube ONCE, but has a cup, keefe made it pass the first round once. Fitzy needs to go if he takes Keefe over Woodcroft.
