Dont ask stupid questions to well centered people, they're not going to like and will show. But Frost is so well centered that he actually finished and answered pretty well the rest of it. What a man.

Firstly, i would like to thank Frost for his deeply insightful answers. As aforementioned, he is so incredibly grounded, articulate, patient and talented. Therefore i hope that others will be able to appreciate his gift of communication and explanations of how Satyricon evolved and the various incarnations of Satyricon- in both the message and the music. I feel privileged to be able to process all of what he explained and "What a man" has already been said, so i will say what a human being! Tusen takk for all of the music and to one of the greatest drummers- a true shaman.

Yep, it was small, almost closet-like room where Frost was warming up with his drumming accessories - and while it was fine for Frost and his pad, for 4 people trying to fit in there, not only to sit down but also to film it was a nightmare.

Frost is awesome, and I enjoy his interviews. I'm not sure I should watch the rest of this video though, just because of the interviewers. Frost clearly states at the beginning that he is not interested in black metal documentaries any more, and the very next question the interviewers ask is about a new black metal documentary! Honestly, did they not listen to his first answer?

It's more like "based on true story" movie than documentary. And it's going to be a movie also about him with Hollywood actor playing him. Fenriz doesn't have a problem with talking about it neither Necrobutcher. So I don't think that asking about it was inappropriate.

It's amazing what the Norwegians, Swedes etc- plus I don't want to forget to mention the first wave black metal bands in The UK, Switzerland etc are able to expound in such great detail while answering to weak questions. Thanks so much for your time and dedication.

Jesus Christ. When will people stop asking questions about the "beginnings" of BM and that whole scene. I don't know if these interviewers understand that it probably annoys the shit out of these guys that were around then to focus so much on that particular time. It's pretty much been written and talked about to a point that it's kind of like beating a dead horse so to speak. Most of these band members were basically kids back then, have grown up and matured and so has their music. I would think most of them would rather talk about the present than constantly going back to the early 90's. Who knows though, maybe they all enjoy reliving that part of their life in every interview they give.

black metal is still niche in the grand scheme of things, relative to other things in mass media. so these repetitive questions are endlessly relevant for any new viewers.

3:01 i do not mean to be mean. But you can tell frost resents this mans presence and his words but remains polite. These men are artists and intellectuals of a high caliber. Of discipline. They come from a country and a society that is very isolate. They do not mingle and so it is understandable that they do not take interest nor seek to take it from modern adaptations of their work. Its hard to see someone who is not familiar with that comment on the events of yours and the people you grew with simply out of the perspective of public interest. I love black metal. I grew up on it. But I was not there and I feel that these documentaries and now, lords of chaos which i detest, are digging up old graves of what was one of the most significant musical developments in the last 35 years. After watching until the light takes us and this interview, I understand why these guys have grown to resent the success and appeal that black metal has achieved. And for that I feel sorrow for something I truly hold dear. I feel that fans are one of the worst aspects of the consumption of art. As they always seek to insert their observation into the art. These men were part of something very significant, and it will never happen again. We should not seek to emulate it, adjust it, or redefine it. Take influence from blackmetal but leave it in the past. Just as immortal, frost, and fenriz are trying to move on to new parts of their lives, so should we, the fans.

Very true. You still hear the sound that was consolidated mainly by Norwegian bands in the early 90's. But the spirit of it is lacking. I was there when the 2nd wave of Black Metal rolled in and latched myself onto it immediately. But the feeling, the intention behind it, it's mostly gone. I rarely discover Black Metal bands who can capture that same essence, that unique spirit that was very much alive in Black Metal in the arly 90's. But there is nothing that can come close to the early Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Mayhem, Satyricon albums. Practically nothing since the mid 90's has that ambiance. It sounds similar on the surface, but it has become a copy, a simulation of what was done in the early 90's. Even worse, it has become a dogma, and that might very well be the main problem with Black Metal music today. There was no dogma back in those days, it was anti-dogmatic. The whole idea of a Black Metal dogma is ironic, because it is exactly what Black Metal should not be about. It is the expression of your own darkness, of completely ignoring trends and expectations and let that darkness flow from you with integrity and genuineness, not limiting yourself to preconceived notions of what you should be and what you should sound like. I'm not saying that all bands that are Black Metal these days are shit because of this, because even without all this there is still interesting music emerging from the Black Metal scene. But in my perspective, the most interesting and captivating Black Metal these days is created by musicians who do not adhere to the traditional, conservative notions of Black Metal, but who pave their own way, create their own sound and image, exude their own spirit of darkness.

The point people don't understand is: in the end its arts. Its about giving a certain feeling a voice. Fans in the black metal scene act like it's about being evil or harmful and hating. But in the end it's about giving the emotionless, indoctrinated society a drastic image of our own inner demons which we all have. If Francis Bacon draws a morbid picture its art, but a black metal song is considered an act of evil (due to shit heads from the past) Long story short, as long as they don't literally hurt somebody (not their cute feelings; people that offended easy) it's just arts. I love the dark vibe and the wide depth of feeling of their art. But I fuckin hate 80% of the black metal fans. Cause they think it's about hate and violence protection.

the way you explain Black Metal sounds like more of an Anton Lavey influenced interpretation of Black Metal rather than the "shit heads" you refer to, i'm sure ppl like my avatar etc... which r the ppl who actually came up with the scene behind the genre Black Metal. without those shitheads Black Metal would have just been an album title by a band who did heavy music. they got the inspiration for Black Metal from the theatrics of the music & turned it into a movement, just like punk & ne other group that goes along with a certain scene related to music. Blaxk Metal was anti xhristian in nature, even with the lavey influence just more superficial/metaphorical sense. Euronymous & the other shit heads were giving the spiritual & tangible effect against christianity, they were just young & stupid & didn't realize what they were actually dealing with & they ended up turning on themselves & each other instead of doing what was really needed. music is supposed to inspire movements not just b white noise in the background, which oddly enough is how i'm sure a lot of ppl would describe Black Metal. art is supposed to inspire movement, in some form & not all movement is meant to stay metaphorical or simply cathartic.

You can thank Euronymous for a lot of that stupidity as well. It wasnt just overreacting Christians. Euronymous was getting guys to claim they love evil and praise evil if anyone asked. They were young and didn't know what they were talking about. The only BM artist I know of who claims to have been reading Satanic books and practicing witchcraft was Quorthon from Bathory.

I think they are one of the greatest band on the planet. Deffianately the greatest band that came out of Norway BM scene. Legends. I love the style they gelled into and glad they did what they wantewd and are not pigeon holed into being "Black Metal" just for the sake of pleasing low intelligence. And it's not boring. It fucking rules in every way. Is black as ever, they never were anything but Satyricon from the start they always did what they wanted. I woudlnlt care if they did aa rock and roll album or any other kind of music, simply because they are good songwriters and it would just be good regardless.

20 years is a long time my man. I can see your point if they had a stint of black n roll and then moved on again to black metal as usual. I would say man that was a strange time for them. But its been as you said 20 damned years. This style outlasted the old. Sorry man. THIS IS Satyricon for better or worse, like it or not. 20 years later and yall still hope for the old. Thats a quarter of your potential life time. You should’ve gave up and moved on a long time ago man.

"BRIDGE between RE and Volcano and their later stuff" /Delusional Guy
@softseagreens
@softseagreens 6 лет назад
I meant Frost, but okay, you actually mentioned it. What bridge between RE and Volcano and their later stuff? Volcano was actually part of a "bridge", indeed a trilogy of Volcano-Diabolical-Nero, that introduced a more simplistic Satyricon aesthetic. That "bridge" lead to the self-titled, of which the plodding nachtmusik of the current record is a direct continuation (alas, minus the melodic creativity that was still present on Satyricon). If there isn't any trace of sth on "Deep", it's indeed the fury of RE.
@MetalurgiaPlus
@MetalurgiaPlus 6 лет назад
You're right in a way, but I also think there are resemblances - not exactly in style of music, but in the approach. On "DCUD" Satyricon seems to continue the more raw, straight-forward approach (while maintaining "rockyness" of songs), but also pushes some experimentation and extreme reverence to details and nuances. Still, it's only my opinion.
@softseagreens
@softseagreens 6 лет назад
I'm not sure I could call adding a little sax and operatic vocal here and there, experimentation. It's ornamentative at best, and it doesn't sit well. Not even Enslaved are too successful in fully incorporating prog-rock and jazz-fusion influences, let alone Satyricon who still push that macho masculinity while trying to be "intellectual" and supposedly experimentative. I don't think they know where they are at this point - which is all too evident in this Frost interview. Pompous, talking from a high horse and in delusion, in promotion of a record which is an obvious failure and likely the end of Satyricon.
