Winters in Alaska can be harsh. Joe spent 39 hours in our crawlspace trying to thaw our frozen water lines at -38 degrees! + We take a trip to Costco for the 1st time since moving to Alaska! We don't leave our off grid homestead often but the trip to Anchorage was a lot of fun & we picked up a good haul of groceries that we needed for the cabin. Thanks for joining us for another video! Joe, get yourself an old propane tank and change the nozzle out to accept a 100+' 3/8" pex line and a way to put water in that tank. Then place that tank on a turkey cooker burner to make steam. Once steam starts coming out the end of the pex, start pushing it down your waterline. The steam will cut through the ice like butter. It will only take 1/2hr or so. Good tip for the next time.

Make sure there is a pressure gauge and a relief valve of some sort. The guy that did my dirt work for foundation, septic and well line buried the water line 14 feet deep to the well and then it come up through our basement floor. The septic is below 8 feet. I’ve seen over 6 feet of frost here in the Meadow Lakes area. We had minus 45 three mornings in a row last week.

@@HomeFreeAlaska I’ve always wondered if the exposed well casing above ground makes the well colder. I’ve known a few people that have insulated their well digging down some and building an insulated box around the casing. Heck the pipeline uses a passive system to keep the permafrost cold on the vertical supports.

We had frozen pipes only once. We bought a pipe heater. It wraps around the pipe and you plug it in to keep your pipes from freezing. It doesn’t take much energy either. It’s a pain in the rump thawing pipes. Joe is the man.

@@marylou3355Just bury the water line deeper. Ours well line is 14 feet down and comes up through the full basement floor. I built this 11 years ago and haven’t had a frozen line yet. I lived not far from here for 30 years before that and saw all the issues over plumbing and heating most homes have. We heat 3400 square feet with about 120 million btu a winter. We had three -45 mornings this week. We have the foundation insulated to the footing, rim joists all foamed and double stud foam filled walls.

Our waterline is buried below the frost line 10ft down. So we can’t dig all that up to add heat tape, but we did just buy & install an inline pipe heater!! It’s working like a charm!👏🏻👏🏻

Nope. Builder of this cabin did not install heat tape on the pipes. And they’re buried 10ft down. Our pipes didn’t freeze once our first winter here so obviously we didn’t know this was going to become an issue. But we just bought & installed an inline pipe heater!! It’s working like a charm!👏🏻

Tina, your editing skills are amazing, and evident in the quality of your videos. I can totally understand why you purchased the larger laptop. Your Costco was busy! My husband, and I hate crowded stores when trying to shop. It'a very nerve racking when your getting trampeld on while trying to reach for a product and someone else grabs the item as your getting ready to reach for the item. Joe was determined to make your water run. God Bless him! You can't control pipes in the ground with those high negative numbers. I don't know if anything would help prevent the pipes from freezing. We have heat tape on our well water lines.....but then again our temperatures don't get in the high negative numbers. At the most we've been -15 and that includes a windchill reading. Puzzles are very relaxing, we enjoy doing them even though we don't have a dining room table. I use my bar in the kitchen, and have to clear it constantly to cook (need counter space). You've made beautiful puzzles. Stay warm, sending hugs to y'all!

I hope that Joe bought those two shirts, because they were calling his name. I took my hunter's safety course when I was eight years old, in 1958, and have always been around guns. Joe is a machine!!!! Such a role model for the boys. We are on a small lifestyle block here in NZ we don't get snow or neg 40 degree temps but have different challenges like flooding and high winds. We are used to deal with frozen pipes in north Texas but nothing like what you just dealt with. Joe is brilliant. He seems to be able to come up with solutions to any problem and you both work well as a team. Kellan is really growing taller and looking very healthy as is Parker. Hi from Australia, your a true champion Joe, you remind me of my husband who is 75 we live on 20 achers property in the state of North Queensland. Nothing will defeat my husband, he fixes everything, you name it he does it. My daughter is married to a man very much the same, they live on 100 achers 10 minutes away from us. Men like these guys a rare and true gem's. I love your sense of humour, your boys are gorgeous and I love watching Lexxy and James. Lexxy is so much like you. I love shopping in a big box store like that. My husband and i shop at Sams maybe six times a year or so. Its a good place to get things that you can store for later. Parker and Kellen are so sweet and well behaved. Im glad Kellen had a year at least to have a father around. I pray he gets to stay longer.
