Painless360 Just a heads up, I tried on my Mac with 27” screen. Had to make a new model, only turned off The transmitters, All other settings stock. Gimbals worked perfectly as standard. Big screen looks impressive. Getting the dongle to go untethered next . What a hoot! Running T. X9D plus SE, Open TX 2.2.2. Cheers

Some additional hints for Linux users that also watched this video Hi, great tutorial, also because it walked me through my first Model creation ;-) Just got my Taranis and now wanted to use it with FPVFreerider on Ubuntu Linux. Until now, I used Freerider with an E_sky 0905A USB Simulator Control; so I already had started Freerider before! For Linux, no change of the input preferences are necessary! But before you start Freerider to use it "with the Taranis" for the first time: Delete the prefs file ~/.config/unity3d/Freeride/Freerider/prefs if you ever started Freerider before on your computer! Then go through the setup in freerider like shown and you should be ready for Rock'n'Roll. Deleting the preferences file will probably also help on other systems like Mac if the calibration process in Freerider shows up with strange results like eg swapped gimbals.

As always thanks again for yet another thing to play with. While it worked as you said for Windows, it's a bit different for the Macs and in some ways even easier. Simply create a new model (quad) and don't change any of the settings. Plug the powered on Taranis into the Mac BEFORE you start FPV Freerider, then run through calibration, set the throttle to be zero at the bottom and go fly! I like the Island to start out of for those of use who do FPV, but don't race. You can always tweak the settings later, but it flies pretty well just as it is.

The key to all this for me was figuring out that the Taranis' USB Mode under Radio Setup (long-press-Menu button) must be set to "Joystick." Mine was defaulted to "Serial" which could have been an OpenTX update thing and it would never show up. :)

This one program changed my mind on FPV. The FPV implementation in Phoenix (rc flight sim) is a kludge and doesn't fly real world as a trainer. FPV Freerider actually does. Now that I have a means of practicing FPV like I did with LOS (which Phoenix does nicely and thanks to Painless360 for suggesting it) it doesn't seem as difficult. Figured out a way to make it work with Spektrum DX series transmitters (without the sound-card thing) if anyone needs that.

I finally managed to use it on OSX Yosemite with the TARANIS by using the software JOYSTICK MAPPER which can be bought on the Apple Store. Thank you again

***** Mine wasn't talking to my iMac till I once used joystick mapper. Till then it works straight forward. Acts as a driver's been installed. Anyway, you always have to plug the Taranis before the lauch of Freerider.

***** Yep. I was looking for a solution as the Taranis didn't work when I bought FPV Freerider. I tried another mapper that crashed my system, I then bought that one and gave it a try and it worked for me.

Newbie's comments. Works perfectly and taught me expo on a quad and more training of setting up a Taranis TX. Because of these videos, I am really learning to use the Taranis TX. Thank you as always, sir. Practice flying FPV? I have not as yet flown FPV in real life. Sort of afraid of not seeing the model and crashing. Orientation is my issue and not seeing the model. Is this normal? Also, how similar is it? I learn so much and am delighted I have these aids.

+Steve Gross Having a little bit of trepidation is a good thing. Too many jump into FPV without being able to fly LOS properly. This can cause dangerous situations when they find the FPV kit fails and they can't fly/hover safely LOS.. Pascal, if you're using a Mac with Yosemite, no need to do anything other than plug it in and calibrate. The ranges that P360 shows here only seem necessary for Win users. Happy to stand corrected but that has been my experience.

***** Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was after using the wizard to set up a basic 4ch model on the Taranis, nothing else is required. Problems I've encountered are: 1. The initial startup sequence is turn on the Taranis and load the FPVR model. Plug in the usb cable to the Taranis and connect to your Mac. Wait. Load the FPVR program and if its the first time, go to the calibration screen. Move a stick to see if there is a connection. If no connection, exit out (have to go through calibration but just whip through it) and exit the program. Reload the program and try calibration again. Thereafter, if you run FPVR and go straight to a scene and there is no response, DON'T recalibrate. Simply exit the program and relaunch. I'm not sure why this works but it does for me. I was getting very frustrated until I figured out the relaunch trick. 2. There seems to be a glitch in the throttle output and the program. If you have your TH starting at the bottom (setting), if you try to do a timed lap, it starts the motors immediately and the false start will be triggered. The only way I could get around this was to use the TH begins in middle option. Hope this helps

I have ordered this HDMI to RCA Composite Video Audio AV CVBS Adapter Converter 720p/1080p and i will use my Skyzone FPV goggles just to make it that bit more realistic hope it will work, I sometimes have issues with transmitter being recognized and need to reboot PC.

Hi Lee, Great video as always, but I'm being a noob and can't work this out... Under throttle and weight, I click into the 100 to reduce to 50 and the value immediately changes to GV. I googled it and all I can find is that GV stands for 'Global Values' and nothing on why I am getting this and not 0 -100 or what I should select? Any suggestions ?? Thanks again !!

I got it to work a few weeks ago when i downloaded the demo, but I used the output page on the Taranis for setting it up: Subtrim 50 and "min - max" set to 0 - 100 (rather than -100 to 100) for all channels. That way I could copy the model for my real multicopter and get the same input page (with alternatives for expo, rates etc) without changing anything there.. also got the same mixer page as a result, even if it's not modified much.. Can you explain what the differences between our methods are? I.e changing Input page weight & offset VS changing output page subtrims and min-max values ?? edit: i like to add also, i do recommend this simulator! I still run the free demo, but it works great for testing all sort of radio settings that i want to try out, and also just for practicing maneuvering etc thx and have a good one

Taranis XD 9 no longer works with FPV free rider. Because I have selected the mass storage with a firmware update. (Note: If you are flashing your Taranis with new firmware, make sure you deselect the "mass storage" option, otherwise joystick emulation is disabled). How can I restore this now so that the Taranis XD9 works with FPVFreerider again? I am working with Win 10 Thank you, and great video,s

Hi Painless360, i have a problem setting up the frsky taranis on freerider. When i calibrate controller, the freerider detect the movement sticks on my transmitter uncorrectly. When i move throttle on my controller, the freerider detects it as a yaw.. When i move the aileron on my controller, the freerider detects it as a throttle. How to fix this ? Thank you so much.

Also if you are a mode 1 flyer you need to swap both vertical sticks around. when it asked for left stick to move do it with the Right stick and VV

How did you know that the weight/offset settings needed to be modified in that way to work with FPV Freerider? I mean, these are pretty specific settings, buried somewhat deep in the Taranis settings/pages. Trial and error? Did you get a hold of the Freerider developers for guidance?

I cannot get my radio to calibrate. Windows 7. Taranis plus set exactly as here. In calibrate mode, nothing happens. Any suggestions. Why am I the only one who can't get it to work?

+odinata Hi odinata, try to install a different driver - for me it worked when I clicked "install previous driver" in the device manager!

Qx7 and my GT 90 may still need some fine tuning, but QX and Freerider function is not happening. Sim as model set up with weight and expo adjustments AETR. When in devices I can open the controller go to properties and in test mode get no movement. A Windows control Wizard can be called on the calibrate, but I don't think it is functional for QX. QX as standalone has been calibrated. Open Freerider for calibration and same. Which is to say, nothing. Should I delete and start over or do you have any idea where the issue may be? Many thanks

I’m having problems setting up my QX7 with the FPVFreerider simulator with my Mac. It binds with the Orange RX USB Wireless Dongle I’m using no problem but the stick movement is not detected in the sim. Mac sees the dongle as “FrSky USB HID” in System information so I guess the Mac is reading it?

I followed your setup instruction, but when I went to take off, the quad just rolled right and crashed with just throttle. Any ideas? I'm on a Mac by the way.

I did what you said and I watched your video on setting up the Tarais for freerider setting it from 100 to 50 and 0 to 50 and the other settings and when I would take off, the quad would just flip to the right. I sett it back to the original settings on my Taranis plus and it seems to fly fine. Why is it that your video settings made it flip to the right and the default settings on my Taranis plus work? I also tried doing what the freerider Taranis setup said and the stick positions on the screen in free rider showed the sticks all the way to the left for both sticks when I finished the stick calibration screen.

Ashish Amatya No idea - sorry. Give it a go! The dongle for Phoenix is more of a copy protection device than a USB interface ;)Happy (virtual) flying!

After trying again and again to get this calibration correct on my X7 and always the yaw was not happening? I finally read the pdf from the sim (who doe;s that nowadays?) So I found out that the drivers that get installed for other radios ? eg my DX8 was upsetting the Taranis setup ,Could you please mention in the Taranis setup for FPV FreeRider Re-Charged that you must un-install any Smart ProPo drivers befor you choose the X7 instead of V-joy USB driver as this messed with my yaw ch for three days before I finally Uhh Da !! READ THE MANUAL !!!!!!!.

You can reverse that problematic channel in the mixer or outputs screen - see the OpenTX mix school..

I tried to do the same with the Taranis Q X7, I configured the channels in the same way as you. Then I go to devices and printers and I see the FRSky Taranis Joystick device, the in FPV Freerider(Demo) when I enter to Calibrate none of the channels work. any ideas>? have you tested fpv freerider with the X7? Thanks :)

It's working flawlessly on my Q-X7 with these above settings on a laptop with Windows 7. My only thought is perhaps you don't have "USB Controller" selected within the FreeRider startup screen ? Or.... there is some difference within the 'demo' version ? Cheers :)

Is it really necessary to do the weird weight/offset thing? I just plug in the Taranis set to the model I want and use windows controller settings to calibrate the channels. After that it works like every other joystick you connect to windows. I use HELI-X (www.heli-x.info/) as a simulator though, which has a demo version with one simulated quadcopter in it. It has a few nice training modes, for example where it tells you to keep a position while there's wind and the camera is spinning around the craft, so you have to correct "nose in".

superdau Yep, if you are using a normal USB cable and Windows with the Taranis. This is all covered in the manual. If you can get it to work without it then great.Happy (virtual) flying!

Hello form the USA. I must be stuck on stupid. Did this step by step 3 times. When I plug in the USB. I does show up in the settlings panel in windows 10. But not in the control panel. Freerider can’t see the radio. I do have an Inter Link controller it does work OK. What am I missing? Thank you in advance foe your response. Ben Herr

@@Painless360 O.K. I visited a video in Velosi Drone that shows how to correct the problem. Turns out the last Windows update changed the driver for the joystick. quick fix to update the Joystick control. Ben Herr

Funnily enough my taranis doesn't work with this method. I use 2.0.17 but perhaps its due to the fact that I configured it with the old companion9x/stock firmware and then just loaded it onto my radio. I must use 100% and no offset. Anyone experience this?

Got it, I use a USB sim dongle and not the USB cable method, so that explains why!

Hello .I need help with calibrating my qx7 to freerider I've tried everything.. so far my setup is spot on I followed all the steps creating a model.. but when I go the The calibrate menu and I calibrate the sticks it only will calibrate my throttle and pitch... I'm starting to get annoyed... who knows about this problem

Could be a few things, incorrect settings on the radio etc. What troubleshooting have you already done?

@@Painless360 hmmm what troubelshooting is there to do for me..cuz I went over the model Settings more than once.. but it's when I go to the calibration in freerider... 1 level sticks 2 left stick left (yah) doesn't work 3 leftstick forwards throttle doesn't work Pitch 3right stick left. 4 right stick forwards pitch works..

hey ive been having problems setting up my taranis to my computer. i have use mini usb and aux and both dont want to seem to work. could you possible help me off of youtube maybe on skype or something? im running out of ideas where to help

Hi! Great video, thanks a lot, it made configuration on Windows 10 really simple for me! By the way, do you happen to know a solution to properly calibrate Taranis for FPV FreeRider on android device? I've tried to do it on numerous devices like LG G4, Nvidia Shield K1 or Philips Android TV and there's always something wrong with yaw, throttle or pitch. All the devices seem to recognize my Taranis Q X7 but its calibration sucks :( I wish to have a "mobile simulator" and will be very thankful for your help :)

I've found a solution thanks to FPV FreeRider webpage community. The reason why I was having a problem with calibration of my Taranis Q X7 was the fact that I had tried to use the Windows profile switched on my controller. In order to calibrate it properly on android device you have to use the default mode of the controller. Then you just plug it in and voila!!! :D Finally I have a mobile FPV simulator always with me :D
