The X9-Lite is here. It's a bit like the X9D that has shrunk in the wash. The good news is that the price has shrunk as well! So let's dive in and see how it performs.
IMPORTANT UPDATE (5th Sept 2019): It turned out that I did, in fact, get the Pro version of this radio. The difference is the type of gimbals used and the fact it's slightly more expensive. The rest of the radio remains the same. There's an explanation here • Mistakes were made: So...
This radio was supplied for review by Banggood, so please use this (affiliate) link if you want to check out the product page. What I'll give is links to the regular and Pro versions.

Got mine a couple days ago. Already have it bound to my XM plus, and have all my switches/sounds customized. Just waiting on a replacement FC for my tinyhawk freestyle ii, to be able to fly with it. Until then using it on my PC to practice in Sim. Loving it so far!

@@Revelation1177 I believe they were on the same firmware, so I think I do remember binding them before doing any flashing. But I flashed them both to the most recent firmware shortly thereafter, so can't entirely recall.

I have a lovely Spektrum DX9 for my planes and gliders but now I am also into quads. Spektrum would failsafe too easily on quads so I grabbed an X9 Lite, R9M Lite and a pair of R9MMs. £125 for the whole lot! No, it's no DX9 build quality wise but it all works well enough. Of course, OpenTX etc. has been a humongous learning curve but both quads are ready to fly on Friday, complete with some amusing switch alerts and safe two stage arming. I've added the URUAV charging board (

Thanks for the review, Wayne. If I were brand new to the hobby, I would choose this tx for its value. I am still enjoying my X9D+ for 5" quads and X-Lite for anything smaller.
@CurryKitten

That's almost the same as I fly, except I tend to use the X-lit for all quad aside from those using Crossfire/R9 or fixed wing models which I use the X9D for

If you don't have button top 18650's, only flat top, you can use a thin magnet between the two batteries to create a connection. Just make sure it doesn't stick out from the center button of positive contact, on the "rear?" (Spring contacts negative) battery. Only to be used as a stop-gap solution, until you can get proper topped batteries!

Hi CurryKitten, i went with the Flysky FS-i6X for the transmitter for my first build. Im really impressed with it, its got a premium feel in the hands, the gimbals seem to be high quality with zero Jetta in the reciver tab in BF, I found the user interface to be very easy to use with every option i would need and more. Another big plus is the price, excellent value for money.

Another popular radio to start with. Once you get used to one radios way of doing things, it is hard to move. It's like being on iOS and having to go to Android :) Great that you've got something that works well for you :)

I had it for a year. It was my favorite RF set. It died in the middle of the day I am test hovering my helicopter indoor. The way it died gave 3 minutes of warning. The signal to the craft felt jammed at first. I powered cycle the radio twice, and it wouldn't power up the second time. I am back to my gigantic qx7 after x9 lite died.

A fine review. The Taranis X9 Lite is intentionally hobbled by FrSky and I cannot accept that. As a new flyer, I am grateful to you and youtube for the education. I opted for a Jumper T12 plus and like it. I am waiting for the Jumper T16 to get hall effect gimbals. FrSky's mean-spirited approach to open-source-based products sucks. I intend to go with crossfire soon as well. I think it is important to "play well with others". Be well!
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 лет назад
The Jumper looks like a great radio - I never got to test one out, which is a shame (for me at least) I certainly think there's some underhandedness going on in the background. FrSky seem to think they have exclusivity on OpenTX - forcing Jumper to fork their own version of the code, and we all know the Crossfire war. Seems to me that a radio that works with more stuff is always going to be better thought of than one that just works with a few things

I bought the Xlite Pro and upgraded all my RXSR’s to ACCESS, works great. Once received is registered to the radio you don’t need the bind button to bind. Put radio into bind mode. Power receiver and done.

Not tried ACCESS yet - aside from all the easy binding and OTA updates, does it do anything else that you you think is cool ?

Fair do's. I moved initially as when I flew FlySky (back on the original Turnigy 9X) there was no failsafe, or telemetry, so I just used to occasionally fall out of the sky - so got the FrSky module, and then managed to flash er9x (which sort of became OpenTX) and loved that - so have always stuck with it. But if you've got something that works for you - stick with it. No good fixing what isn't broken

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 лет назад
I can't see how this could be a technical limitation. Do they simply want to try and get everyone over to ACCESS in order to sell more receivers perhaps. You are right, people will onyl put up with so much, and Jumper seems to be making a good alternative radio. ACCESS will have to be *very* good to get pas it

I don't think it's been left off for a technical reason - in which case maybe someone will put it back in. But in the meantime I'm going to try a multi-protocol module that'll do it. I'd prefer not to flash to er9x as at the moment.

Sorry CK desperately trying to pick up on the output of old friends that I have missed whilst I've been really ill I'm not getting far coz I'm still extremely ill and likely to remain that way (Cancer btw) But this one I have an opinion about, Yes limited though it is, its is still a good beginners TX. But I reckon, judging from my own learning curve, a competent learner (not me obviously :D) will only get between 12 months only of development
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 лет назад
Shit man, that's bad news - hope you doing ok... or as good as you can. It's quite hard to try and think in beginner terms. There's a lot of knowledge I take for granted that I probably don't think about - but I figured that I could fly quads with this radio at least the same way I use my X-Lite (which is my favorite radio for quads) and if you weren't doing something requiring silly amount of switches/slider on a plane then you'd be ok. Sure, if you went really complicated with your mixes/modes and whatknot you could run out - but I don't think most people do get to that stage

That Xlite does not have trim buttons? how can a tx not have trim! There is a flysky tx (FS-I6S) that does not have trim buttons and its baffling why they thought it was a good idea to bury the trim in a menu system :/
@xxxenricop
@xxxenricop 5 лет назад
For quads with Betaflight you can do trims with stick commands...it is in fact recommended to with those directly on the fc rather than using the radio. Look at JB's video on it it's easy to do and very useful.
@philip-sancho
@philip-sancho 5 лет назад
The D-pad on the Xlite trims one side's stick (can't remember which one), then holding the shift key allows you to trim the other side. I use an Xlite to fly fixed wing now although I did just purchase myself an X9 Lite for the increased gimbal throws. My hands don't fit the X9D or QX7
@stevefox3763
@stevefox3763 5 лет назад
@@philip-sancho so it still only trims one stick? Crazy that they put 'half' the trims on and not anything for the others lol. I couldn't imagine having to land, adjust in the menu and take off again and test to see if it's better! I have a quad but my main love is fixed wing and being able to trim in flight is essential!
@stevefox3763
@stevefox3763 5 лет назад
@@xxxenricop you assume everyone is flying a quad, I own one but I fly mainly fixed wing and in flight trim is essential. Ardupilot is my choice of fc firmware, far more advanced than betaflight.
@philip-sancho
@philip-sancho 5 лет назад
@@stevefox3763 Hey Steve, I believe the D-pad trims the right stick by default which is the most important trim I'd say, since throttle isn't trimmed much (ever?). You can hold the shift key pretty easily with your right thumb while trimming with your left thumb to trim the left stick (essentially for rudder only). Its really not as bad as it seems.

Oh, that was quite a while ago - was a fun day out with two friends trying to find a gap in the rain. It was all pretty bog standard really. I was using a stock Taranis X9D flying a Bixler 2. This either had a FrSky L9R or a D8R-ii+ receiver in it. It was using a Storm autopilot and an old Immersion 600mw VTX (only 8 channels set by dip switches!) It wasn't a long range flight or anything, we were only 1km away from ourselves in max distance. Just a case of getting the right sort of low clouds and making sure you don't completely cut your VTX signal off with them

I'm always a bit confused when I hear stories like this. I'm a normal customer for things at Banggood as well. Occasionally an order doesn't arrive, but the normal story is that it gets resent without much hassle. In the case of you ordering something and not getting it - it should be a simple case of opening up a PayPal dispute if they are not refunding. You will win the dispute, and that should be it.

Ignoring Banggood, should you use any seller that's remote from you - use PayPal. They offer a lot of protection for the buyer, and will always favour the buyer for resolving disputes. It's just an added level of protection that using a credit card may not offer you

It depends on what you want to do and what you need out of a radio. Some of it also depends on just how good ACCESS is. The qx7 is a great radio, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra for what is essentially the same thing (in the main at least)

Hey there, I was wondering if you could do some experimenting with the app "Andruav". It allows you to add a android phone to a drone as a telemetry system. This allows you to utilize 4g and theoretical unlimited range. I plan on trying this myself, but would love an experienced flyer to review it first. Thanks

@pksteffen
@pksteffen 5 лет назад
And that’s why this isn’t a good starter radio.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 лет назад
I love the X-lite, but it's more expensive and a bit more fiddly to use (IMO for a 1st timer) My thought process here was - would someone starting out want to use D8, and would it hold him back if he couldn't use it. Aside from a bunch of whoops style quads using their own d8 style rx's, I figured the noob would mainly be going towards a 5" and should be using a decent D16 type rx. That's my thought process, and hence a decent starter radio - price considered. If you really still wanted d8, then the Q7 is still cheaper than the X-lite as well... and you can run Crossfire (with less mods that needed on the x-lite)
@pksteffen
@pksteffen 5 лет назад
CurryKitten Q7 is an excellent radio as well. It’s not that much cheaper. Anything around $100 is a good choice. X-lite which I transitioned to from Q7 just has a better form factor and is lighter and more portable IMO, but yes Q7! It’s not just whoops that run D8. Many micros do as well such as the very popular Tinyhawk Freestyle which would be a great starter for anyone wanting to learn FPV before a 5”. Any of these new radios may not have D16 depending on where you buy them. Flashing it to get D16, having to flash a receiver to gain Access protocol which would be other route is also super fiddly. Why give up such a great option to race some of the fastest whoops like Hummingbirds or latest micros like Freestyle? Give that up for 24 channels? No thank you Frsky.
