I drove my Toyota Camry for fifteen years and treated it the same way…like it was new. It still looked amazing when it bit the dust. Every time I got in my car, especially after it was paid for, I thanked God for it. Every single time. I was thankful to not have a payment and to have a reliable car.

So much of saving is about changing your head. Instead of thinking "I'm depriving myself by not eating out" think "I choose to bring my lunch because I want to take my family on a nice vacation."

Thank you, Robin! This was a great video and I really needed the reminder. I actually think this topic needs to be talked about more in women's Bible study groups, too. In all areas of our life, the biblical concept of self-control is so rewarding. Whether it's being mindful about spending, eating, the words we speaks, what we expose our minds to, our emotions...it all has great rewards. I really struggled in one area this past year because the consignment clothing stores didn't feel like a good option for a while. The on-line clothing sales got me! Fortunately, every purchase fit, was my style and color preference. My remedy has been to return to the 10 item wardrobe. I've put away the purchases I don't currently need in a bin. As my current wardrobe pieces wear out, I will replace with the items in my storage bin before I buy another item. I encourage other women in a similar situation or purchasing regrets to find creative ways to redirect those purchases; give them as gifts, put away for later, donate, whatever.♥️🇨🇦

Your wedding picture looks so joyous. The best thing we're doing for ourselves is paying a couple to a hundred extra dollars on our mortgage every month to get it paid off in half the term. We're very frugal, so whenever we have extra, that's where it goes.

Love Dave Ramsay too! I also drive an older vehicle 2009 Honda Civic. Still treat it like a baby. Hand wash only, only a few drive thru car washes. Also park where I won’t get dinged. Only has 74,000 miles and I’m 68, hoping it will last me the rest of my life. I don’t know if I could deal with the screen in the newer cars. Love your tips and I agree with everything!

agree with the screen too. And it is SO bad for the kids. (They can barely sit still nowadays. 🙁) We have a 2008 and 2010 Toyota. My daughter saw the screens on a friends car - just by her reaction I know I do not want that in their life…

Such good information in this video, Robin. Thanks for sharing! I agree with your comments on home decor, especially seasonal. Less is more! One way to save, especially if you're just stating out, is to shop the day after the holiday when all the items are marked down. Fewer things to choose from, but you won't be tempted to "go all out". You've really gotten your money's worth on your car! That's impressive! I think when you get a new one, you will be amazed at all the new safety features, so that's something else to consider when deciding when to trade in.

Thank you for your great tips. I have recently been on a decluttering binge. I even put my Keurig away and I don’t even miss it. I can make a small pot of decaf in the afternoon just as quickly and it’s so much cheaper. Years ago we redecorated our family room. The decorator brought over a ton of cute accessories and we bought every one! I have spent the last nine years wishing I hadn’t , lol! And, trying to sell them at garage sales. This year we participated in a neighborhood garage sale and I was brutal about getting things out of the house. Everything that didn’t sell got donated. I have some empty cabinets now and I love it! Oh to have such wisdom when we’re young!

Thumbs up x 1,000,000!! I love Patrick's eating out formula! And I love that you addressed spending on coffee. It is something that I have struggled to impress upon my adult daughter. DIY has been our big focus, especially since the pandemic began. We started at-home haircuts last spring and haven't been to the salon/barber since! This was a great video and I agree with pretty much everything you said. We didn’t have a lot of money in the early years but my husband chose to put some of his salary into a superannuation fund which you can’t touch until you retire and many times i wished he hadn’t , lol, but we are retired now and are debt free. We took the kids camping all over Australia (we live in Adelaide) as these were cheap holidays, and we always had fun. Buying the best quality you can afford is good advice because if you take care of it it will last. Tfs 💕

You know, Robin the temptation window shopping thing, I stopped having catalogs sent to my house years ago to keep me from buying things. I always love to ACTUALLY window shop,😄 but not nearly as much. What you did cause me to think about is my "online window shopping" that can turn into me impulse buying things. I never would've considered that. I'm glad you said what your integrity impressed on you to say instead of not saying things because you might hurt some feelings. I'm going to be looking at how I've been doing this and change some things. Thanks.

This is an excellent video, Robin! You do have to get your priorities straight for sure. I believe in simple living as well. It is a better feeling to not have a lot of stuff as it can clutter your mind as well as your home. BTW, I have a 1999 4 Runner Toyota and it is running well and holding up partly due to my taking good care of it. Two years ago I had it in the shop a lot, but now it drives very well and plus I have not had those dreadful car payments. The new cars of today are just not built as well as they were back in the 90s or even in the early 2000s. You are a lady with a good head on her shoulders no doubt. Patrick is fortunate to have you as his wife and mother of his grown Sons. Have a good rest of the week!

Really great video. I am in agreement with you. I also drive an older 4 runner (2006 sport). Funny story I bought a 2004 4 Runner brand new, which I gave to my daughter when I found the 2006...my husband has bought me a Lexus and also a Porsche Macan but I didn't keep either of those. I really, really like my 4 runner and will drive it until it dies :) I have learned to be content with what I have, thanks to God's word.

My parents and grandparents were always good examples of thrifty living, while still having quality family experiences. They lived below their means, and were well-prepared for retirement. It amazes and saddens me when I see RU-vidrs or others buy, buy, buy. The current philosophy about money seems to be "spend it if you have it" and "keep up with the Joneses". People tear their homes apart and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to change out "dated" decor, some of which may only be 10 or 15 years old. Our personal worth is not in our belongings, but in our character Another important tip is to train for a good-paying job so that you are able to support yourself plus have some money to save. Those who don't get that training and who stay in low-paying jobs will not be able to achieve that cushion. You have a very balanced attitude towards finances. And your car looks basically new, and your home and furnishings are stunning. As you said, when you don't nickel and dime yourself to death, you can then afford that quality lifestyle.

Hi Ann! I learned a lot from my grandparents too. They lived through the depression and knew how to live frugally, but well. I agree there aren’t as many good examples today and hope that more “influencers” will show a different way to live without all of the consumption that just leads to discontent. God bless! 💚🌿💚

I'm minimalist with everything except books. I tend to prefer ebooks for pleasure reading and printed books for reference. My Kindle Paperwhite fits any of my bags and any functional pocket on my clothing. I get free ebooks daily from some reader/author emails. I replay all of the video games I play to completion. I work out at home. I prefer simple instant coffee as I'm the only coffee drinker in the house. I will pay more for quality since it will last longer than cheaply made things. For instance two of the three five-drawer chests at our old house have nonfunctional drawers. The bottom drawer broke in the one that stored Daniel's clothing. None of the drawers work in the one I used to store the towels in. Only the real wood one has all of its drawers working. I plan to get three from Furniture in the Raw which are all real wood furniture. That way they will all be the same height as I tend to use the tops as a standing desk/storage area. One holds my laptop, one holds my printer and sunrise alarm lamp (debating on getting a lingerie chest to store my huge bras as well as mine and Daniel's underwear and socks which I could put the lamp on), the other holds all of my personal care items and accessories. Also, have an example for accessories. I'd see a bag I like in a store and purchase it. Either the zipper breaks, the handle breaks off, or the fabric lining tears before the season is over so now I only buy higher quality ones. I heard the quality of some designer bags has gone down. I'm loving The Teacher Tote for all its organizational features (five built-in pen/pencil holders, pouches, padded and zippered laptop pocket, insulated and zippered food pocket which is meant for transporting lunch to work fridge and they recommend adding an ice pack for longer storage, front zippered cell phone pocket, two deep beverage/umbrella holders at the sides, and key clip on the side) and the zippers slide smoothly. I use the Olive one in the Spring/Summer and the Navy one in the Fall/Winter. It's wide though since the laptop pocket can fit up to a 16 inch one. They used to sell a backpack that had similar features but a slimmer profile. I didn't see it on their site last time I checked. They just have the tote, pencil case, and folio on there now. I do need to get a smaller bag if I get the job as they wouldn't fit the lockers there. I also need to get some closed-toe shoes. My only good shoes right now are my Columbia Ice Maiden II Winter boots and my Gurkee rope sandals. I'm leaning toward a brand that offers beautiful but limited-edition patterned ones. I tend to favor mid-priced products.

Good morning Choo Lee! We always plan to keep our appliances as long as we can, but find that it’s usually not necessary to buy extended warranties. When we put that money aside, we can use it for repairs and we almost always save more money. 💚😊💚

@@FaithandFlour Good night now is after 11pm. Over here in Singapore 🇸🇬 we have Optional to buy the Extended Warrenty. Buying electrical such as fridge and washing machine is go by luck. My previous Bosch made in Germany lasted me around 5 years. But slightly after 3 years the door refused to open. Luckily we bought extend warranty we have the faulty door replaced. The service guy told me my washing machine still looks so new. He knows that I put in my effort to maintain my washing machine. He told screws and nuts may not be from Germany small parts holds the bigger parts and play and important role. Too bad my washing machine have screws and nuts issue. I have a friend she bought the same model and lasted 3 years she had to throw away. She bought from a small Electrical shop near her HDB Flat so no such service as Extended Warranty.

@@FaithandFlour We choose to buy what we really need and last. Look good does not mean is good. Will know after some time. Hope what ever that we buy can last for ages at least 10 years. Can save money too.😄 The manufacturer side may not have good QC check then consumers like us will at the loosening end. We also choose to pay by Cash whenever possible. Singapore standard living is high too.
