Don't forget to include Haley in learning about cars! My dad taught me growing up and it saved me when my car died on a freeway in Seattle. I changed my own fuel filter.

I agree. Girls are left out of so many "boy" things, so they are dependent on men to do them. It's also important for boys to learn the "girl" stuff, and to be taught that there is no such thing as gender-specific tasks.

My husband taught our girls car maintenance and how to change their oil at 16. I posted some pictures of one of my girls changing her oil and it was surprising how many comments we got in that post. All very positive and that’s when we realized many kids don’t have those skills.

I'm known for eating stuff after the date. I found a yoplait yogurt two years past the date & after a sniff test i ate it. It had fallen down behind the shelf. I don't buy that brand, I had brought it back from a hotel continental breakfast. Made me laugh and horrified my buddies! I buy store brand or Costco plain Greek yogurt and there's no way that would last.

My father wouldn't let any of his seven (5 girls) kids get a driver's license without knowing how to change a tire, check fluids, refill fluids, jump start a car, and back then roll/push start a car. So I'm sure you are going to teach all your kids. I'm almost 70 and those are skills I'm happy to have learned, especially in the days before cellphones.
@mariayelruh

I've seldom had to actually change a tire solo. Just getting out the jack, and removing the spare usually is enough time for someone to stop and offer to help. Actually, I usually have the manual open to were the right placement is for the jack stand. My Vega was kind of an odd one.

I come from a family of mechanics, 3 brothers, who have their own shop. Our Dad had started with a gas station after he had learned in the army. My Sisters and I had watched them all our lives. One day we got a flat tire. We decided to change it ourselves. We stood on the lug nut bar to get off the lug nuts and stripped them. Needless to say the boys told us never to fix anything on our own again. Just call them. To this day we just call them and they are fine with it! 🤣😂😄

The secret to a happy marriage; when my husband tells me how long a house job or project will take I immediately multiply it by three. 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 month, it doesn’t matter, multiply by three and domestic bliss is restored. 😂 We find it isn’t necessarily the task that takes time, it is learning how to do it and the trips to the store for extra supplies and the right tools.

Loved this! I still get teased from my kids about when I, years ago, would wash my plastic bags and re-use them. Totally get the hotel thing. I always was trying to find the cheapest motel/hotel. Usually got burned. Final straw was when I booked a cheap motel room that was a “cabin” my son and husband went out of town to go hunting. My son called and was so upset at how bad it was. “Mom, you can see holes in the wall and see outside. The sink was disgusting, and it all smelled really bad.I called and told the manager they would not be staying there. He informed me we would be charged anyway. I said fine, do that , and I will make a phone call to the fire marshal , pretty sure you are not in code. Never got charged.

100 Kudos to you both for your level of partnership, and willingness to go the frugal route together. As an objective observer (seriously, cuz I'm single, and watch a LOT of YT), it's interesting to see how couples interact on vid formats like this one. I literally can predict when a relationship is headed for trouble - even when it seems to be 'perfect' on the surface - by how the couple interacts during this type of vid. You guys get an A+ SOLID couple rating. You respect each other's speaking time, you seem to really listen to e/o responses and are genuinely supportive of e/o throughout the process. Sure, a little ribbing and what-not is par for the course, and part of being together for five-ever, totally normal. Thanks for sharing your frugal tips and your lives with us!

I had a motel experience like yours! I found a cheap hotel thru an online service in Fort Lauderdale for a friend & I. When we arrived there it was awful!!! So we walked around & found the neatest boutique hotel for not much more with a small kitchen. We bought food from the Dollar Store for meals, enjoyed some free passes for classes at a small local gym, enjoyed time on the beach & I attended a conference. My best gym story: my mom had a major fall/ hip fracture when at the beach with my sister. I was in major weight loss mode during that time (lost 200lbs) & a local gym near where I stayed allowed me to come for free for several weeks while my mom had to rehab down there when I explained the situation. I fully expected to pay. A nurse in the hospital even offered for us to stay in her home. I will NEVER forget the kindness of the people of Tallahassee! Love this video & the two of you together!

We are a family of 6 so it can be hard to find a place to stay for a reasonable price and without dividing the family into 2 rooms. So instead we do airbnbs. We have had great Airbnb experiences so far. It’s way cheaper and you get a kitchen to cook in. We bring our cooler and an instant pot and throw a meal from the freezer in it and it’s waiting for us when we get back from our daily adventures. We have become pros at packing picnic lunches. Also, if your on a tight budget, finding a destination that is family and budget friendly is key. For instance, most of the museums and the zoo is free to the public in St Louis.

I had a food science professor in college who really hammered it into our heads that expiration, use by, best by, etc dates are freshness dates and NOT spoilage dates and that appearance, smell, and taste are indicators of spoilage. I bought Lara bars at a liquidation store they had 8 count boxes for 50 cents a box, 16 count boxes for $2.25 and some individual bars 10 for $1. I bought a bunch, some were expired but most weren't expired they just had damaged boxes but all the bars were fine. The ones that were expired didn't taste rancid at all despite the bars having nuts. Our liquidation store ALWAYS has packaged cookies and crackers for $1 a box and loaves of bread for 50 cents, especially organic bread lol

Funny, Chef and Dietitian here. You know what your best friend is for liquids? Pool test strips, and a chart (can be found online) telling you what the acid/alkaline level should be in milk, canned goods, ect. You can buy 500 of those buggers for 5$. Being said, tread lightly here. Always check soft cheeses (cottage, ect) or fermented items for any pink colouring. If it's pink, down the sink.

With our stimulus money a couple years ago, we bought my husband a pair of steel-toe Wolverine boots. They're the stove pipe pull on style. He loves them and chooses them over his sneakers most times (except when wearing shorts...that would look very strange). He worked repairing motors for over 40 years and had an electrician's license till he retired and we couldn't afford the cost of the insurance. He still does some side jobs and repairs things for people. You were talking about cheap hotels and I have to tell you about the America's Best in Marion, IL. Our son went and "checked it out" for us, because we were come down to visit from our home Tilton, IL. The room was filthy and there were bugs and I almost forgot, the door didn't latch. I got our money back and we checked into another hotel, Motel 6, I think. Much better. This video was so much fun.

Women would feel more comfortable taking their vehicles there and would trust their assessments more readily I think. If I had the money I would open one!

Excellent video topic, Christine! I would give this video five thumbs up if I could! I agree with most on your lists in my life situation except for one: extreme couponing has never worked for me. I did not have access to a lot of coupons, my local stores very quickly stopped doubling when the craze became big, a lot of the products were items I wouldn’t use or buy anyway, etc. It just never was a possibility for me so I never did it nor even wanted to. I would add another topic for my list to absolutely do again that you didn’t touch on: buy my kids’ clothes at garage sales and thrift stores, saving a ton of money buying quality brands. Same with toys, bikes, books, etc. Do not impress upon your kids that used is bad. You covered used furniture which falls into this camp which I did and still do. Frugality is being careful where you put your money per your values. Don’t spend money on areas that are not important to you AND that you know you have inexpensive but quality options. Pre-owned clothes, furniture, cars. It leaves room in your budget to spend on areas that are important to you, for me that was savings/no debt and paying down our mortgage. Which I did. We are completely no debt. Wise frugality can get you far.

I have found that the really cheap hotels with really mixed reviews often have people who live at the hotel that leave the great reviews while the realistic reviews are from the typical traveling guests.

Omg! I agree so much on the Hotel one. We booked an $80 hotel in Sea Tac a couple of years ago and I wanted to bathe in bleach. Black mould, blood stained pillows, filth and stench everywhere and when we went to leave early we were blocked in by a vehicle where the driver was out cold from whatever drugs he was taking.

I loved this video! I am a firm believer in booking a nice, clean and safe hotel! However, we recently moved and I HAD to book a motel and it was what scary movies are made of!!!! Never again!! We ended up sleeping in the car and moving truck with our 3 kids.

Great video guys! Sorry this is so long. I never thought of myself as frugal, but after listening to this video, I am. For clothes, I rarely pay full price. I only buy clothes when there're on sale. I recycle, reuse many things. I use old prescription bottles for a lot of items, after they'lre washed of course. I use them in my stationary supplies & other things. I keep binder clips, rubber bands, paper clips in them. For the car, a bigger one to hold a small tube of triple antibiotic & bandaids. About a year ago my husband started using a brand of chewing gum that's contained in a plastic box. I use them in many ways. I use these for, Bobby pins, hair clips, rubber bands, hard candies, eyeglass wipes, etc. I will buy a larger size of an item if it will be cheaper in the long run. 4 years ago I bought 2 huge rolls of Christmas wrapping paper & this will be the 4th year of using it. Last, food for a road trip. I've got this one nailed. Our family was going to Ceder Point & our teenage sons were each bringing a friend. We were leaving early so I told their friends don't worry about breakfast, we're bringing that. I had home made muffins, yogurts, juice & fruit. We also had more snacks for the car & also for inside the park. Also when we took the whole family (5) to the movies I would put paper bags (lunch size) in my purse. We would buy the largest popcorn (which was refillable & we would fill the paper bags for everyone & get more if needed. I'm sure all of these things have saved us money over the years.

You guys get it. I totally agree--even on the clothes. I shop too often at Gabes (like Ross) I end up not liking them. [Those good hotel/motel reviews were written by staff!] Another habit (one I'm AGAIN breaking) is stop for a drink. No. Just no. Why do drinks taste better from a drive-thru at inflated prices? Just NO.

A few people have already said it, but kids' clothing at thrift stores or garage sales. Especially little kids, like junior high and younger. As they get older and don't grow as fast buying better quality clothes is a better investment, but little kids especially active ones don't need brand new clothes. You can find some good deals at garage sales on brand name clothing. Shoes. Invest in good shoes. After years of Walmart shoes (during the fast kid growing stages) we invest in multiple pairs of good shoes to rotate throughout the year. Lawn mowing. With decent equipment, a pair of people can get through an amazing amount of mowing in a few hours or over a weekend.
