Really enjoyed this intervew a lot. I had never heard of this nursery and by crazy coincidence, just as I was listening I was googling fruit tree growers and Dave's nursery popped up! Guess he's the master.

Remember when buying bare root trees get them home and follow the label or Tips provided by other videos about presoaking the roots before planting and get them in ground immediately especially living in SoCal only time I’ve experienced bad results was when not planted immediately even thou I kept them moist ect. Bare root are quickly becoming my favorite the ease to plant and to cage from gophers is awesome.

Dave Wilson site is the best! Now I have some new stone fruit hybrids I get to search out for my home garden. I feel kind of dumb not knowing about some of these types, nor anything about Mr. Zaiger...especially because I grew up in the central valley and my brother has been the Operations Manager at Gerawan Farming for a couple of decades or so! They're one of the, if not the, largest exporters of stone fruit (and grapes, but no more on that)! Thanks for the great info.

A question for Tom, for next month's meeting. With all the varieties based on monthly harvesting & let's say stone fruit, can these varieties be grafted onto one rootstock for a homeowner with limited space? and has any hybridizers ever used multiple rootstocks on a single tree allowing say some varieties that require a specific rootstock to be used? Charles, based upon our chats in the past I really need to get out to Dave Wilson nurseries and fill my shopping cart with my dream. I would be like the kid in the candy store. I also would like to meet Floyd Zaiger & his team. I am sure I could ask 100 questions. Thank you,, Mr. C, for this wonderful informative video!

at 21:35 when Tom describes the change a tree experiences when it is bought by a customer. The tree is removed from a well shaded and protected nursery environment and then plunked down into someone's desolate yard where the tree is now exposed to all the effects of the weather, sun and wind. That explained to me why nearly all of my freshly planted trees showed so much decline, struggling to survive, looking horrible for the longest time. Whitewash Time for my trees! Then come the gophers! That is a different topic.

In which 8-9 months of the year should we fertilize container trees? Is it different for citrus than for persimmons? (I’m in San Diego)

Generally fertilise in spring, summer and autumn, those are your 8 or 9 months depending on your location. Whatever you do, do not fertilise in winter.

Thank you for replying HotStepper89! :-) Also, another point Tom has shared in prior lessons, is to start slow (lower dose rates) with your fertilizers in early spring and late fall, compared to your May/ June feeding that should the maximum recommended rate as the plants/ trees are at peak metabolic rates with 14 hours of sunlight, supporting fruits & active summer growth. I have heard of some avocados being done like this... Starting with a Zutano seedling a tree of desired root stock is grafted onto the Zutano. Then these are both buried deep enough for the grafted scion to grow roots. Then the Zutano is cut off the bottom and discarded. Then the desired root stock has a new scion of a desired avocado fruit variety is grafted onto the top. This is as close to what you are asking that I am aware of.

hello, what do you recommend for the nemitoads sp? that eat the roots, you know insects at the root level?

keith crawford Hello 👋 I’ve heard that you can drench the roots with a solution of neem oil & water (follows directions). The best solution would be to contact Arbico Organics as they have specific products that target harmful nematodes. Please keep me posted!!! Charles 🌱👍

Melinda Dixon look through some of Charles videos he shows a lot of different stages of sunburn it can be different for each tree or plant. Avocados can turn completely black and the branch will just die very quickly. Or turn brown from the natural green. The damage caused can be killing a branch to killing the tree. Sunburn can effect the flow threw the trees preventing water reaching the leaves and the sugars produced from photosynthesis from sun hitting the leaves reaching the roots. Cheers

When pruning a year and a half old persimmon tree for height would I prune in the fall even though that is typically when they fruit? Can I just cut off the top?

Hello Ellen B. The #1 BEST time to prune your trees is late winter, after the risk of frost (night time low freezing temps) has passed, but before spring budding/ flowering. Here in Los Angeles, that is typically late January to early February. San Diego should be similar. However, for Backyard Orchard Culture, you will be selectively pruning year round with less aggressive cuts, simply to control shape, size, etc-- with minimal impact to the fruit yields. Which product to you use for white washing? Is it that sunburn powder you sell? I have that but it’s powdery, not paint. Do I add water?

Hello Ellen B. YES, the products start as a powder, and you add water. A pint can makes: (1) a pint of brush-on solution, and/ or (2) 5 gallons of Ready-To-Use Spray, and/ or (3) tree/ grafting paste; depending on how much water is added to the contents. There is a WhiteWash formula (blue label) by IV Organic that is Oil-FREE and specifically mitigates summer sunburn & winter sunscald. The 3-in-1 Plant Guard (yellow label) has the added 7 oils for the added benefits as an insect & rodent repellent. Let me know if you have any other questions! Charles :-)

Tulips Moran you can spray dormant but if you check some of Charles other videos spraying the tree is to cover the leaves with a very very light white coating to help from sunburn and detour pests most plants leaves will protect its branches and stems from sunburn it’s the lower trunk that needs the protection. IV Organic hello thanks! I had just ordered some lady bugs and released them into my garden here in Minnesota today. I have also watched several Tom Spellman Dave Wilson Nursery videos lately and they have responded to all my current questions, they are a great resource and thanks for the video! I'll probably watch a few times, and will be looking into the IV Organics whitewash. I watched your other video on it and seems like a good idea, our winters here are harsh and ants have been a issue lately. Thanks!

The bottom trunk like behind them In the video and Charles shows In other videos spraying the leaves with a very very light white coating to protect from sunburn if your climate is super hot In summer Charles is in Southern California as am I. Cheers

Melinda Dixon young plants and trees or when new growth emerges is when they are most vulnerable. Plants and trees have grown fine for so long without any of our help. Cheers
