In this episode the boys lean how to handle defeat and failure, when the fish disappear with lure after lure!
It is time to set sail again and friends on sailing catamaran OCA have suggested that we go to Hapiti which is another anchorage on Moorea.
We set sail leaving the stingrays behind and make our way to Hapiti.
The pass entry has waves on either side which make it quite exciting.
We drop anchor in an incredible anchorage. The anchor sits on a shallow ledge and the stern of Mokara hangs off the shelf into deeper water.
As always, the water is clear and in no time as all, the boys are swimming and foil-boarding thanks to OCA.
We are invited over to OCA to enjoy a dinner with them and play table tennis on their dinning room table.
As the weather hasn't been great in terms of wind, we spend an additional night here due to the size of the waves in the pass.
On leaving, we find the exit through the pass a bit lumpy but not to dangerous despite huge logs floating past us. We exit the pass under the guidance of dolphins playing in the waves.
There is a light wind as we make our way back to Tahiti where we plan to provision and head back to Fakarava. As we make our way slowly back under sail, it becomes evident that we won't arrive in daylight.
A night entry is not ideal but is doable. We do however find it difficult to identify locations of the channel markers with the island lights in the background making identification difficult.
Can you believe some yachts we have seen have a red flashing light onboard to show that they have an alarm system onboard. In total darkness when there is no moon, this can cause problems when trying to work out what is going on.
Anyway, we did make it in safely and we enjoyed the challenge.
We did a quick shop in town and then following day, made our way back to Fakarava.
This wasn't the easiest passage as we kept on having to change our destination. Origionally we were going to Makatea, then the north pass of Fakarava and then the south pass of Fakarava. This was all due to changing winds.
It was however good fun and we also had some experience of hooking a marlin and a couple of other monsters. Sadly they all got away.
We made it into the south pass safely and dropped anchor followed by snorkelling. As you know, we love it here. We would stay forever if we could.

Excellent photography of beautiful places! That's what's nice about your videos, we get to 'almost' enjoy the water clarity, scenery, etc., while you do the navigation and hard work! Agree about the nav beacons, we found numerous times the land lights totally confusing the markers. 😕 Sorry about them fishies, boys... keep trying!🐟🐟 All the best to the Taylor family!

Hi, Thanks for the message. With regards to the lights on land mixing in with the navigation lights, they forget to mention this during training. It all sounds so easy when you are learning about navigation. In reality, you need to be very careful when entering a harbour with lots of land lights such as red and green traffic lights. A mistake can be costly. Good to hear we are not alone with this type of experience.

Just goes to show that sailing is an art and requires alot of knowledge of currents etc. Not just sticking up a sail and off you go. It is nice to learn about the actual sailing/ work of the trips. Admiration for you guys as it ain't all Sun and beautiful beaches and coral reefs, you got to get there first. Happy travels

Talk about a lot of wind shifts. Thankfully we had a few options in terms of a destination. You know how we like Fakarava, so this turned out well for us. As you mentioned, currents require knowledge on how to deal with them. At the end of the day, all the factors make sailing interesting. They can be tiring though. As I trawled through my clips to make this video, I had quite a few that I had to record twice. We were tired and it showed. It was a short passage but a busy one.

Seems to be an endless array of fine places one can choose to set anchor in these Polynesian isles. You remind us also of the perils to negotiate in these waters, and the supply challenges. Landing one of those monsters would sure help replenish the larder (assuming it's edible?)! So I hope you can wrestle one of them aboard soon.

Hi Frank. This is a region that has literally years worth of sailing and exploring. We sometimes think that this may have been the best area to have started our voyage in though the danger is that we would never have left it. Our pass entries and exists always seem to work out ok and I am sure some viewers may think that we are make a drama about nothing. It can be incredibly dangerous and we are thankful that so far it has gone well. Our friends on their cat feared sinking when exiting a pass at the wrong time. Interior of their yacht got flooded. Thankfully all ended up ok. Get ready for some fun fishing when we get to Toau in a couple of episodes time.

WHOA!!!!!!!!!! Your friends got expensive taste. THAT is a Sunreef cat. A 60-footer I suppose. And btw the first one I see privately owned. They are the favorites of Med charter companies. And they are UNBELIEVABLY expensive. There must be a hottub somewhere on that boat. ENVY-MAX!!!

Quite an incredible yacht. We played table tennis on the dinning room table as it was so big. I believe there is a hot tub on the roof area. Really nice family that own it.

The “pet” coconut tree reminds me of the Captain’s palm tree in the 1955 movie “Mr. Roberts.” I really enjoy when the boys narrate because their accent is delightful to hear. What accent, you say? Anything that sounds different from how people talk here in the America South is an accent, y’all.
@SailingMokara
@SailingMokara Год назад
I do like the 'y'all. We have friends from the US who keep saying that. We have a mix of accents. Claire and I were born and raised in South Africa. Before we had children we moved to the UK. So the boys I think have a full British accent and Claire and I may have a slight blend.

No, we never considered it. We have 2 very powerful torches on board. One of which, if you look into the light, you won't see anything for a couple of days. This has come in handy when ship are heading for us and not responding to VHF. Light up their bridge and they soon respond.

0:45 You will NOT see the whales if your engine is off. They like the sound of it AND they simply can't "see" you if there is no sound. Whales and sharks don't see too well. Orcas like the rudders on sailboats.

Highly unlikely though if we had near empty tanks and the fuel sloshed away from the fuel feed pipe, there is a risk of pumping air into the system. Then it could get exciting. Not too sure how big a risk this is, but it does cross my mind at times like these.
