Concerns that the nearly $10 billion dollar rail project is “bleeding out” after a key project leader suddenly quit. For more Local News from Hawaii News Now: https:/www.hawaiinewsnow.com For more RU-vid Content: / @hawaiinews
Lori has been doing the best in her role and responsible for many price cuts. Seems like Hanabusa is the one that needs to resign and go back to politics.
I tend to think Hanabusa should have stepped back on the issue of the departing person. Trying to persuade someone on a pressured project after the death of one family member and worried about another family member to stay on, is not the appropriate time when they clearly need time deal with personal priorities. Anytime, there is a death in the family, time is needed for grieving. Pressuring Kahekina on how it should be handled is micro managing. They clearly need to time away from work and not have to address Rail's problem.
Just focusing my comment on this particular issue...if someone wishes to leave their employment as an out-of-state resident, because there is an illness in their family, that is totally their choice. As it's only that person that knows what's best for them and their family. WHAT IF that's person has a parent OR child with a terminal illness that has but a year left to live??!! This selfishly isn't about rail, this is about being there for 'OHANA'. After all, isn't that what we who grew up in Hawaii are supposed to be about...family.
hanabusup gotta go. enough with her being appointed here and there creating positions just for her like she the only qualified person in the state - give us a break!!! THAT is where corruption is the politicians appointing other politicians as favors!!! once you out - you out!!! bye - go move to another state be a politician there!!! these recycled folks gotta go!!!
@@jcougar55 So true! And if Hanabusa wanted to appeal to have the person possibly stay, all she had to do is say respectfully to Kahikina that we'll (both of them) speak to the person one more time in-person. She didn't have to verbally attack Kahikina in that board room...no class. And as all of them are frustrated about rail, Hawaii always should've hired someone that knew something about a rail system from the beginning. They always seemed to hire people that were learning on-the-job. The same can be said about trying to get the stadium designed and built.
They reason they started in Kapolei was because that was the cheapest section and now that Hawaii taxpayers have dumped $10 billion into this corruption, the next half will be +$20 billion that the democrats are able to say we have to finish it now for sure and the unions and developers will get rich and the taxpayer will get a crappy train.
@gsauce132able like how he told his friends and lobbyists to buy the land in the path of the monorail so they can make huge profits from the government .. like they say it's all politics yeah.. smh
@@9FOBLOCCUZ then you are privileged because it will be much cheaper when it operates and makes the most sense for people who can’t afford to park or Uber
Should have built the town phase first, so there can be revenue flow from the beginning. A rail that operates from Kapolei to Aiea is useless for 95% of commuters and students (using the bus is way easier).
Exactly! The best would have been Airport to Waikiki then loop to UH. Then expand both ways to East Honolulu and West to Wailuku. From Wailuku to Mililiani where a lot of professionals work in town.
Typical. Look what happened in south Maui the new school that took years to build and finish. And then whoops! How are the Keiki going to get there safely. The bridge! We forgot the bridge! I think it was determined to take 3 years. Pathetic.
Should've started at UH and work your way West because it goes to nowhere right now... People would've been using the transit if you at least made it UH to Airport as phase 1...
@@johnfrombrm sigh so short sighted if that was the reason. When they started from Kapolei first that puzzled me, Get the hard parts done first and the most congested area to get people moving around town.
The fatigue is palpable. You can't coerce someone to stay when they want to resign, in fact, the very action of trying to persuade someone in that state of wanting to leave often makes a person double down on their want to leave. It seems like an unfair projection of the collective frustration and a morale deflator in an already uphill endeavor.
Hanabusa said maybe Kahikina could have offered time off vs resigning. At this level of pay, scrutiny comes with the job. I don’t feel much for who is right or wrong. However, I am disappointed that the rail fails to serve the public. Make all the excuses you want.
Colleen hanabusa needs to retire from politics, she's to old, and she stuck in the past and corrupted, just lorry kahikina corrupted, DONT TRUST ANY POLITICIANS
Strange camera was there for this outburst? Someone seems to want to be rid of someone and embarrass her . Glad she stood her ground . We pride ourselves on aloha and family first . Total opposite was shown .
We need to have lots of independent dialogue. Should HART be dissolved? Should it be put under the City Transportation Department? Should any personnel be so indispensable that one resignation becomes a huge drama? Why is Lori Kahikina's pay lower than previous HART CEOs who were men? Is this an equity and discrimination issue?
You know… the real problem no one is addressing, how overqualified people exploit jobs, come and go without accepting any responsibility, leave and expect everyone else to clean up their mess. Especially if they’re not from Hawaii and have very little personal ties to oversee a project, it’s like they’re expecting to be on vacation while they work. It’s a revolving door because overqualified individuals are exploiting the system
@@jcougar55Lori. She’s single-handedly brought the project back from the brink of failure many times and is going to stay on as CEO until the final phase is completed. Hanabusa has no business bashing Kahikina over something that’s not in her control. Hanabusa needs to recognize and appreciate the important work Kahikina has done to keep the embattled rail project on track instead of screaming at her in public.
Might as well close down the rail to save the taxpayers money. They found out not enough people were going to ride the rail to offset the operation costs of maintaining the rail so might as well shut this whole rail project down to save money.
You know what all you guys worried about is money you people make too much money if you ask me your main concern is making everything happen in a timely manner
Never imagined that the San Francisco subway extension of 1.9 billion for 1.7 miles was a bargain. 2000: 530M estimate 2001: 650M estimate 2012: construction begins 1.6B estimate
damn waste of money..10 billion dollars..hawaii population is 1.2mil..why not give all those 1.2mil people 1 million dollar each..i mean they gonna still get 9 mil dollars for leftovers..nobody will complain about traffic if each family gets 1 mil dollars.
These projects are incredibly difficult even on the mainland with a bigger labor pool. Have to imagine it is extremely difficult to find people to run it.
Non of these yahoo's are important to this project. Look at any part of the rail construction and tou will see... very few workers. Hiw can this project ever get finished with only a few working on it. Hart is a fail. All.involved are failing daily. Put a hundred workers on the project and get it atleast through Kalihi... This project has gone on for way to long.
I did research, rail in trouble, the reason why he left is the cost estimate they bid was last yr and they are bidding for the contract into kalihi the fta was punching g from last month it was due, hart knew that this yr inflation is not writing in and would be a problem from early this year as the the recovery agreement price is set in the new contract. If not a one Oahu press pointed a threatening letter when they was stalling last year that it in the contract if you go over the agreement you have to pay back the 1/2 700 million back. I think we are there. He couldn’t get the bid at the prices they quoted last yr, so we might go over the 9 billion fta cap in the agreement. Hart in big trouble the fta date line was last month for that last leg. Over budget and pass critical date line of contract sign.
Qoute : City Center Guideway and Stations” contract or CCGS is expected to cost about $1.3 billion, and is a vastly complex undertaking. It is the last major construction contract for the project, and will finally extend the rail line into the city’s densely developed Kahihi and downtown neighborhoods. Meddings oversaw rail construction and has been deeply involved in the planning and procurement process for the CCGS contract, which has already been repeatedly delayed.
I don't know what his job was for the rail.. But I think his job for everyone in that room was to shoulder the blame for the rail not turning into something good.
The rail isn't designed to do what we want it to do- alleviate traffic. And that glimpse into their meeting shows the pressure they're under having to pretend that it is.
This rail wasa bad idea from the start, and is only getting worse. Notice they no longer post how many are riding the rail???? I would guess close to nothing. hanabata grandstanding again. Why is hanabata even there in the first place?????
What has been built actually works well and during heavy traffic it’s faster to use the rail than the H-1. I thing the problem is the Kapolei station is in the middle of nowhere instead of stopping at the mall and you can’t get to the airport yet. Some of the shipyard uses the rail, but even they need another bus to get from Aloha Stadium. I’m hoping as more stops open up it will get more traffic. I do use it to commute to work and would use it to go to town if could rather than fight for parking.
I’m not surprised at all by them let’s pay them a bonus for ousting work 😂 don’t you just love Hawaii politics voted #1 co ruptted state of America 🇺🇸 👍
The main issue should be the cost and finishing this project. Not on the issue of who's there. The project should already have a plan and schedule in place for completion. The cost is already a travesty and a failure by this leadership, they need to do everything in their power to stop the overruns and finish this project. This board is using smoke and mirrors on the public to continue their cash cow. Fire the board and get new competent and trustworthy people in there to limit the spending and complete the rail. Then have an investigation and prosecution of the corruption.
both sides were wrong, one that jelled too much one that didn't have control over the crucial important position that are needed to run this operation. As usual, in Hawaii incompetent and unprofessional people in high positions to lead the islands affairs.
That was totally wrong. When an employee wants to leave they leave. No talk story about trying to keep them. He had his reasons that seem totally separate from anything to do with rail. Are they saying no one else in that department can step up and take over. If that is the case it may a good thing to bring in someone new that may actually train / mentor another person to do that job just in case an emergency were to arise. As a boss it is always good to have people under you capable of stepping in and doing what you do. This isn't his leaders fault. But to slam her with her frustrations is wrong and unprofessional. Who voted this lady in? Maybe they are the reason people are leaving. Can you imagine her with the cameras off? Watch out, she be showing her true colors right there. Hanabusa I agree should resign. We don't need that kine of leadership in Hawaii... As we all know in Hawaii we cherish family so what the "F" is Hanabusa talking about? Sorry for the rant but her actions are just terrible, unprofessional and immature.
