Just wanted to give a big thank you for this video! I've been doing the straw exercises regularly since this video cane out, and I have seen (or rather heard) a huge improvement in the strength of my vocal fry! I've been working on my fry for about a year and a half with little progress, and I was beginning to think maybe I would never be a fry gal, but this video changed everything. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

Not necessarily related to fry screaming but since it kinda came up you've mentioned students "working on a song" a few times before, and I'm curious if you have any videos about how that process works? Just like a general overview, how long do you have your students work on a single song for, and what is that process like? Is it just a teaching tool, or is it something you recommend/expect your students to do for every song they want to learn to sing well? I've never really thought about it before recently but I would be curious to get a glimpse into what actually goes into mastering a song and how long it takes for one specific piece as opposed to just singing in general.

I can do the quiet fry scream, but there is no projection going on. It sounds pretty much like you demonstrated in the beginning but I mostly feel it in my throat, like almost irritating. Is this normal or am I doing it completwly wrong? I also can push a lot more air through but it just sounds like a loud hiss. Like an angry python... Do I have to use any voice in there or does the sound come just from more air pushed through the closed flapping vocal chords? Describing this is hard... 😅
@horrorinfusion
@horrorinfusion 3 года назад
If it feels like it’s burning in the back of your mouth in the entrance to your throat, you’re doing it. If it hurts in your actual throat you’re not doing it right. I learned this the hard way. And as for projection…well I’ve been singing for a while so I kind of already have it down but this video should help you get the breath support you need. Also, no voice. Do a regular vocal fry, and then push with your diaphragm and it should be quiet but gargly. That’s the first step down.
@Cheesesalad
@Cheesesalad 3 года назад
@@horrorinfusion Thank you for your advice. I've gotten a bit better since my comment. I can make it less breathy and more gurgling. However I can't sustain practicing this for more than 30 minutes without my throat getting so dam dry and scratchy that I feel like I'm actually doing it completely wrong. It gets to the point where I can't get any distortion going on anymore. I am also hoarse after but just a little bit and I can't sustain clean notes anymore but I recover fast from it. Probably it's just hoarseness from dry throat and nothing injury related. It seems especially unlikely to be too bad because my screams sound awesome at times but still with pretty low volume and no voice behind it at all. So it seems safe but wrong at the same time. I'm probably confused as screaming isn't normal at all and needs a lot of getting used to.
@horrorinfusion
@horrorinfusion 3 года назад
@@Cheesesalad well, I hear warm water and warm herbal tea can fix hoarseness and help recover a lot faster. Keep drinking water as if you were exercising any other way and it should help your throat stay lubricated. That’s what i do and I can sing clean after. I need to project more, I think we’re at the same step.

@@horrorinfusion I am playing with the thought of creating a RU-vid channel where I post my progress and then maybe do some covers when I got it down enough. Could be a great way to stay motivated and getting tips and critiques from the audience. Who knows what fruits it might grow... I think Alex Terrible started like this too. I looked at your channel and noticed you haven't posted anything. I was eager to find out how your vocals sound.

wow I didn't know we basically live in the same city. but yeah cold drinks are always warm. it's so hot outside today. I walk out and I'm just trying to walk my dog and I feel like I'm going to think every time I go outside and start walking. it's so bad. especially out here in the rural area it's worse than the city. I lived in a really real real area last time. last summer. I had to walk 15 minutes to get to a side store. some days I really felt like I was going to drop down. and not come up just from walking 15 minutes. it's just too hot out here these days. but yeah I'll definitely look into getting those. they seem like a good investment.

Holy shit that is genius. I absolutely suffer from "weak and quiet fry syndrome". Can't wait to try that out over the next few weeks. Never understood what the hell people meant when they said "yOu JuSt HaVe To PuSh MoRe AiR oUt" in regards to fry screaming. I mean, I know how breathing works, I've been able to stay alive for almost 29 years. Don't get me wrong, I understand, that there are special breathing techniques needed, but I naturally have always been breathing with my diaphragm. I didn't know people needed to "learn" that. I also was always able to hold my breath for a bit of time. Often freaked out my PE teacher, when we went swimming, because I would just put my head under water and float there or swim multiple 50m...lanes? tracks?...with my head underwater and she'd be like "Remember to breathe!". :D So I think I got the whole breathing thing figured out. Just never understood how to push more air out with fry. In my case, I either do the "The Grudge" noise or I breathe out very heavily/loudly. I can't seem to combine the two. Maybe this exercise will help.

Hello! Nice to meet you! My name is Stefan and I hope I will finally get the opportunity to contact with you if my comment is one of the first's. I'm actually a guitarist, vocalist and a beatboxer and watching your videos sometimes is super helpful! You are one of my most favourite 'RU-vid' vocal coaches and I love the way you explain techniques and share information with other people! I also love your reactions! Please, react to something from Tomazacre! He's actually a singer, beatboxer and back in the day was a death metal vocalist. And I know that you are classically trained musician and if you haven't heard a beatboxer before, right now it could sound pretty strange to you, but please, trust me that beatboxers in 2021 are great vocal percussionists, as well as most of them are great singers! The biggest part of them are also great bass vocalists and they practice and develop lots of unique bass vocal techniques that are super unknow to 80% of today's vocalists and even that some great vocal coaches react to them, still are with blown mind for what they see and hear. Nowadays' beatboxers completely have the option to reproduce a whole electronical track, using only their lips, throat muscles, tongue and voice! So, it's gonna be kind of hard to find a video when Tomazacre is performing screaming techniques, because I can think of only one video when he was challenged to create a song, combining death metal with trap genre and the topic of his lyrics was "Relationship issues", so it's kind of weird and unfortunatelly his lyrics had to contain swearing phrases a lot, but if you can react to this video and probably a little bit of some others and try to concenrate more on the techniques, I will be the happiest person on this planet! There's a second reason why I recommend you doing this, outside the fact that he is my most favourite beatboxer... 😅 There's one hyper unique bass technique witch he uses the most and It sounds incredibly mindblowing! Some beatboxers call it "hard bass", others call it "evil bass", third call it "devil bass" and so on... So, please, check out at least some parts of those videos and make a reaction video for them! I'm sure it's gonna be pretty interesting to the other part of your audience as well because this is something extremly unique and unknown to most people nowadays it is not what most people think it is! Actually every beatboxer has his own style, so everyone is different, compared to another! Tomazacre also his own solo music career, but sings in Chilean language because that's where he is from. But when he sings, during beatbox, everything is in English. Here are the videos I personally recommend you and think that are going to be the most interesting to you, as a professional vocal coach: Tomazacre | GBB Vice Champion Performance - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zOwZI_R3dqQ.html Tomazacre | Sicko Mode Cover - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--D6d8_S6gpI.html Tomazacre | 9 Minutes That Amaze Everyone - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lGPBZ0u-hvI.html Reaction Video of Tomazacre | Death-Metal-Trap Performance with Screaming About Relationship Issues (starts at 15:26) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6v1j2RAVdII.html There is no need to watch them all until the end. The last things I must say are only two. First thing is that there are absolutely NO EFFECTS! Everything he does comes all through his mouth and is not edited in any way! There are a lot of live performances in battles when he does it infront of people. And the second thing - Thank you so much for the HUGE patience and I apology so much for this LARGE comment in advance! You are a great person! Keep doing what you like! We all love you! Have a great day and best regards! 🙂💜🍀⭐🔥💯✨

His vocals would fall into the category I call “voice with distortion “ or singing/belting with grit or rasp. This exercise would help singers of that style though as well but people doing. that don’t have much of an issue doing it loud, like the fry screamers
