@Huddison, thanks for the nice tips for config of the Xbox controller! BTW, I loved the landing mini tutorial towards the end of your video - it really helped a noob flight simmer like me!
Very useful, thanks. I am just considering selling my Yoke, Controller and Rudder as they take up so much room and I don't have a dedicated space. I have also accepted that I "play" Flight Simulator rather that try to simulate an actual pilot experience. I've had the Xbox controller now for a few days and it is a lot of fun and far easier to move from room to room with my Razer notebook computer. This tutorial was really useful in helping me understand the sensitivity settings. cheers
30:27 I have the yaw problem too, it doesn't save the settings, so landing, taking of and taxiing it's a bit frustrating, especially when wind is blowing. I reported it to the developers and they told me they added this problem to the issues list of the game so i hope they will solve it in the next updates
Former RL CPL pilot here: FS2020 is amazing on the Xbox series S. The training missions are pretty much spot-on; it's all condensed, but you can repeat them as needed.
Yeah well congratulations.I havnt been able to fly since the damn x box update.the game was near perfect on pc and now it’s totally ruined.I have no controller options.it erased every single command I could make using my controller. Everything is all out of whack.hundreds of dollars in dlc totally unusable
@@andystephenson5407 That's frustrating - I will be experimenting with the PC update & current build today, with a view for my next video later this week.
Don't worry about getting old -- the explanation was fantastic either way. Thank you so much, I'll be enjoying this game a ton more with your help and I'm glad I found this video!
wanted to express my extreme gratitude for you. I am so happy you made this video you made my day. I have been playing for 3 months now on the controller on the default settings and just forced myself to get used to the settings, this is night and day. Also, you have a jolly attitude and are not boring like most people which helps a lot rather than reading guides. I have paired it with my vr headset and its like real flying, the only thing I need now is the ability to use vr controllers instead of the mouse. ALSO, you are so funny hahaha it isn't your eyes, I am 23 and I read it as extreme too, dyslexia can be a thing. haha cheers mate
Good video, thanks for doing this. I have some thoughts. Internally on an xbox controller the two triggers share the same axis, called Z. So in your video you change the options for one half (LT) to -40, but leave the other half (RT) set to 0. Just a guess here, but I think since it's shared you therefore have two conflicting sets of sensitivities, and it either chooses the RT over the LT, or just aborts setting it because of the 'conflict'. So I suggest trying to set both LT and RT to the exact same values and then hit apply and see if it works. Or maybe you've already tried this, but it sounded like you didn't know the RT section existed until this video. Also, I don't think your extremity deadzone is necessary. The normal deadzone is to make sure you don't get phantom inputs when your stick is just resting. But at the edge you don't need that, since you're at full input. All you're doing at that point it making the outer edges of your sticks useless. You can see this in the video, when you adjust extremity deadzone at 26:15 all it does is shallow out the curve (and you say exactly that's how it feels when you go back to flying). If you like the shallower curve, you could have just achieved that originally by setting the normal sensitivity to -70 or something similar. I think you'd end up with the exact same curve but with full stick usage instead of partial.
Extremity Deadzone puts a cap on the max range of the axis. For example: a setting of 10% on your Y axis pitch would mean that you can only ever achieve 90% pitch. So this setting is good if you never require more than 90% pitch up or down for example because it will never go all the way to 100% pitch and feel too twitchy/aggressive. Also, for regular deadzone. An Xbox controller will never rest at a perfect x-0%, y-0% value when you aren't touching the analogue sticks. Let's say your left analogue stick rests at +x-5%,+y-5% when you aren't touching it. In such an example, when you were not touching the stick, instead of flying level - the sim would think you're moving your left stick up/right by 5% even when you're not touching anything. So in such an example, a deadzone of 5% would eliminate that unwanted phantom input or: stick drift/stick float.
also one thing ive wanted to figure out forever, is it possible to make the external view camera rotate with the aircraft. In other words, locked to the pitch. i cannot stand the default where the external camera stays level.
That sounds possible & plausible within the settings somewhere; I'll investigate at some point (or perhaps others will see this comment and beat me to it ;)
My biggest issue is trim... and using thumbsticks for control.... really hard to get used to in a controller. Joysticks are a must have for this. Especially for throttle control which is hear impossible using buttons on a controller Thinking of getting the turtle beach velocity one which even has a trim wheel near the hat switches on top.
Thanks for this video. Very excited for the Series X launch. I am wondering though if the Xbox will handle more than 1 input device at a time. I'd really like to be able to use a Mouse and maybe a Keyboard for more technical things, like configuring nav and comms, engine start-up etc... Far as I can tell if you just have a controller it doesn't seem like you'll really be able to have the most realistic Sim experience.
I have an idea for another video. How about keyboard hotkey automation of tasks that usually require few clicks or buttons to do, maybe that could be a way to create cheap alternative for the external gadgets you plug in. The software that can do that is called AutoHotkey.
Great idea my friend: bookmarked the website for Autohotkey, for further study 👍

Hi !!! Did you know why each time I land with the tbm930 my wings don't move when I want to roll to a parking. I try to find but I can't... It's my first ten fly and 9/10 I land correctly but plance refuse to move correctly on the floor .. pls
As far as I'm aware, you can't open/close doors with the default aircraft - some add-on aircraft allow you to though (typically by clicking on the door, or a specific button in the cockpit).
Interestingly, the controller settings on MS Flight Sim on Xbox are already set to basically what you've recommended! Button layouts, sensitivity, the whole bit. About to do basic training, wish me luck
Excellent video. Setting the Sensitivity - and Sensitivity + to -65% seems extreme however it does appear to work for you. I do use an Xbox 1 X controller and I've experienced what a lot of people have reported that the next time you start the game your settings and sensitivity are no longer saved to the profile you last used. My controller is connected via bluetooth so my fix for this was to make sure the controller was turned on and connected to the PC via bluetooth prior to launching the game. I would often turn the controller on after launching the game and that's when my setting would be gone. Since I started making sure the controller was on prior to launching MSFS I have not had this issue.
That's a great tip for those using Bluetooth Xbox controllers. High(ish) sensitivity seems to suit me on the majority of flight controllers - personal preference really ;)
Thanks, I really appreciate your videos. Also, a curiosity, I can follow your spoken English well without problems, you have perfect pronunciation. Hello from Italy !!!
Do you have anything about setting up the drone and slew camera with the Xbox controller on a PC? I want to continue to use my joystick Hota for everything else.
I'm using a xbox wireless controller on a new desktop evga 3090 and with the controller while looking around the cockpit I'm getting a little lag and some stuttering very little but annoying and it never did that on my Asus 2060 gaming laptop. Any idea what I can do to fix it?
@@Huddison hi thanks for the quick reply. Yes I do have vysnc disabled since my monitor is plugged directly into the gpu. Also brand new computer and I'm having input lag with my mouse when plugged into the USB 2.0 ports but it goes away if I plug into the blue USB ports or the front USB ports I believe the blue USB ports are 3.0.
I'm pretty sure no Xbox controller ever made has 0,0 center coordinates. My plane would constantly want to slowly bank right with no input from me. Going into the Sensitivity menu I could see my left thumb stick at center was actually reading to the right of center which was obviously the problem. I gave the LS X and LS Y axis a 6% on the Dead Zone and that fixed the problem.
Thank you so much for all your tutorials. You are not only able to explain difficult subjects in simple words , so beginners can follow you, but you also in particular deserve kudos for the way you speak, clearly and distinctly and not as fast as most of the other tutors do. It seems you care about the non native English speakers, thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video. I'll be getting my new pc in a few days and will be purchasing msfs2020 as well but will be only using an xbox 360 controller as well. I have absolutely no experience in flight simming but I've always been keen to get into it and this video has helped big time. Big thumbs up to you.
You must be excited for your new PC and MSFS 😉 I am intending to revisit the Xbox controller for the PC version of MSFS - there have been a few changes since I made this video.
Long time P3D user with an Xbox controller... Works perfectly. So I got a subscription on Xbox service for $1 and downloaded FS2020. After 5 hour download I fired up the sim only to discover it was completeley unusable with the controller. Upon throtling up the aircraft it bounced all over the airfield... Even the A320 did this. Spend 2 hours setting the controlls and nothing I tried worked. So after 5 test take-offs and less then 3 minutes flying time I cancelled my subscription and removed the game.
@@Huddison I got it fixed, Its bc I used a PS4 controller so need to use DS4 windows and it counts as wireless controller aswell, So I deleted all wireless settings and it works perfect. Done my first flight and had auto pilot on and changed the altitude when it told me to but still was about 4000ft above the runway
@@Huddison I,m really enjoying your channel James. I've been around flight simulator since 2004. But never really got into learning much from it. Even up to fsx. I used it to just fly around. . And like you say. Nowt wrong in that. But I,m knocking on a bit now. A 55 year old yorkshireman. Lol. And Since msfs 2020 came to being. And how beautiful it looks. I just now want to learn the sim properly. Your videos and although I don't speak much on there . Listening is wise thing to do when you know nowt 😄And your community flights ✈️ give me great info. And goals to achieve. Cheers mate 👌
03:48 is there a way to use my left stick to view and my right stick to control the plane? I mean, is there an option to do that or should I remap every single command manually?
Great job on description of controller assignment location, you seemed to jump around too quickly with your mouse pointer. Otherwise thanks for doing this. I am expecting my xbox s today and wanted to see how the controller was setup in default mode and knew I would have to make some changes.
Is there any way of showing certain things on screen in cockpit view? Such as elevator trim, because when you're scrolling up and down with controller you dont really know how much you've got on, so you don't know how much to take off again to return to 0. And there's no reset without actually looking at the lever and interacting with it!
There's no digital readout that I know off that tells you how much trim you have engaged. Check this other video of mine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ul9OkRbVBb4.html - trimming is akin to estimating and 'feeling' how your aircraft has responded to your trimming commands. There's a black tab/marker next to your Altitude readout that tells you if you aircraft is either climbing or descending.
Is the Xbox 360 controller (non genuine) works good with Flight simulator 2020 on PC without adjusting something in settings or you need to adjust it? if the Xbox 360 controller works without adjusting in settings on PC, can you drive the airplane with controller not just the camera view?
Nice video but unfortunately it didn't help me I even have it set to -100 sens and the plane still bolts up and down left to right guess I'll hit Uninstall button
I have a little question. When I try to take off, the plane does not stay with the nose up. if I do not keep the lever up itgoes down and the wheels touch the runway. I get to make a strong lever move so it takes off, but it does not look very realistic. Do you know how to fix it?
I got it working. So it turns out that if you have the NZXT app running in the background, the keyboard will not work. I closed the app and it’s working now
See this known issues posting (scroll down until you get to 'Peripherals: Xbox one Controller Rudder') flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016027399-KNOWN-ISSUES-Last-modified-Feb-16-2021- Seems it's a know issue and is "being worked on".
I wonder if the rudder problem is because the LT and RT buttons are just buttons, try mapping the rudder to the right analog stick, maybe with a combo to keep the camera in place.
Thank you so much for this. I’ve just started playing it on the Xbox S and had a nightmare with the default settings. Still struggling to get my Thrustmaster Hotas One to work with it - seems the Xbox controller will suffice. Anyone wanna buy my Thrustmaster? 🤣
My controller doesn’t pop up like it does for you I’ve literally tried everything from reinstalling this shitty game that takes 5 hours just so I’m not able to play this game is really annoying also waste of $60
I don't flight a great deal of fighter jets in MSFS, but I would be tempted to leave the sensitivities at (or near) default, so that you can maneuver quickly.
@@Huddison same here. Triggers are basically set as buttons instead of axis since the newest update. But if you reset the settings, somehow, even though it's not shown in the settings, the triggers are used as axis again. Not sure about changes in settings though
Great video, I have been playing Flight Sim since its release on PC with a xbox one controller and I have had a blast! Landing most of my attempts. I also changed the sensitivity a ton. Good work on the video, going to send it to my dad for trying the xbox version.
@@Huddison Cheers, appreciate that! I have one question though, I use the controller for 99% of things, but when i want to use the hotbar with the weather,etc.. I use my mouse to scroll up to the top and pick one of the options. Have you found a good way to do this only on a controller? Its really the only thing Im not sure of for controlling on the xbox version. Tried last night on PC by selecting a key on the controller for it and the hotbar would show up but I wasn't able to move around to the options. Thanks for any tips or suggestions on how to use that hotbar on a controller, thanks again for the vid!
@@KatalistProductionsKozzySasha On the next video I create (this'll be on a different subject matter), I'll take a few moments and see what I can discover & get back to you.
@@KatalistProductionsKozzySasha I couldn't find a way to do this with the Xbox controller on PC MSFS, but I bet Asobo will integrate a mouse pointer, type thing, into the controls for the Xbox release.
Please answer, I noticed that when I click the L button, the one to activate the cursor to interact with the plane, for example in cruise flight if I click it, the plane makes a very small dip down or wrapped up, do you have any ideas to solve this problem?
I've never done it, but the following might be of aid: support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/hardware-network/accessories/change-controller-vibration-xbox-one-windows-10
I have looked everywhere for a video that fixes this problem and can’t find one , so when I move my joystick to the left my plane will move to the right and when I move it to right my plane will move to the left what do I do
hi, I have run into a problem with Xbox one controller the wings on the turn coordinator drop but i am not moving the stick side to side any ideas for a fix?
Chsnging sensitivities helped with my xbox 360 controller and helped stabilize the aircraft in straight and level flight. Maybe play around with the sensitivity settings and see if that helps alleviate your issues.
@@Huddison I am using the settings from your video it is like I am moving it left and right but I am not what setting would change and what does neutral do?
@@beauthompson5338 I think neutral alters the normal central position of your flight stick or controller. So on ailerons, if you adjust neutral settings to the left, your aircraft will be left orientated (or vice versa). I'll be home tomorrow and can check this properly.
I desperately need help I have searched lots of places but none had any related results. I accidentally removed every single bind assigned to my controller assuming the cursor would still work I literally cannot do anything. Is there any possible way I could restore them to defaults. Any possible solution I will accept.
@@Huddison Thank you for the response. Unfortunately the cursor to navigate the ui is completely missing and the d-pad is also not working. I can only use the A button and the bumpers to navigate.
@@Huddison i play on pc. I have tried multiple controllers, asked for help on reddit and stuff like that... Nothing seems to fix my problems. If i like turn it like Hangs and gets stuck or none of the buttons even work, do you know if it's about my pc or the controller or just the simulator? I have multiple other problems to... I just cannot fix them🙄
@@Jesse0ja it's difficult to say what's causing your problems. Are you a member of our Discord? Lots of helpful advice in there, from people who may have had similar issues.
Thank you for a brilliant and simple video. I cant wait for the game to land on Series X in a few weeks and the first thing I'll do is mirror your controls to see how it works for me. Thank you.
I've just been watching this again ready for the game landing on Tuesday. Just a quick question, when reassigning the flaps should it be Y + Down/Up rather than just Down/Up? Y + Down/Up is what the Trim was assigned to originally.
