FS2020: The C-172's G1000: Part 3 - Setting up for an Auto-Pilot Glideslope Landing 

Hi Huddison! Thank you so much! 😎 To answer your question... Do real world pilots in a C-172 use autopilot for approach and glideslope. Short answer is.... ABSOLUTELY!! Read on... 🙂 Not all 172's have autopilot at all, and some aren't capable of glideslope, but when the aircraft is equipped: Usually in VFR conditions like Few Clouds, Clear Skies etc... No, you wouldn't really use autopilot for that.. You could sure! Some do no doubt! But most pilots would hand fly in those conditions for landing. However.... It's a completely different ballgame when flying IFR. You will certainly be able to hand fly even in IFR conditions, but in overcast when you can't see anything, what you just did is very commonly used. Not necessary, but It helps reduce load on the pilot. Try doing the same flight you just did, but do it AT NIGHT, with low winds, but full clouds. Bottom of clouds about 500ft AGL... The idea, is that you can use the autopilot to handle a ton, but when you get to minimums you should be able to see the runway and land without autopilot as you did here. The only thing missing in this video, which would apply in real life, was lack of visibility due to cloud cover. Awesome video as usual my friend! 👍

Great video this dots the eyes when it comes to IFR landing This has clarified some of the issues I’ve had in the past it’s a bit easier now with the new G 1000 NXI Which is definitely easier to use than G 1000. I will also check out AcesDawn Going forward.

Thank you for your video, again, clear and simple ! One question though, I'm learning to use ILS on B747. Eveything is fine , both diamonds are centered, I click on APP and let the AP do the job, but twice too high. Could not land. So should I disconnect the AP ? If I understand well, the localizer and glide slope are information given by the airport to follow the right line. But how are they interpreted by the plane ? through the AP ? Because I thought the AP only led the plane with the instructions from the FMC. Edit I forget sometimes to obey the computer which tells me which degree of flaps I should put in... the reason for being too fast or too high ? maybe...

Hi. Another very useful demo thanks. However I have figured out how to set the GS, although it only comes on when I press approach mode. My problem is it follows the inputted route beautifully until the last few miles and then it seems the plane seems to go it’s own way. I’m at correct height for the GS pick up. Should I have Nav mode on or am I missing something obvious? Thanks again.

Using the new and updated G1000 Garmin, the approach ILS is very much different to yours on this video. Following what you done does not give the same path. Any idea what to do after inputting ILS for Heathrow

Have you seen glitches where the autopilot approach doesn't work? Regularly I find it not following the altitude pip, or even the course line. I've disengaged the navy mode and altitude hold AP, the hit approach. But often I have to kick out of autopilot a d go manual.

This is really interesting - because I have used AM in the past and has not worked (maybe cos I use it too early or wrong time). But if the AP really does control the speed and your descent, onto the runway, then that is quite something - will test it again properly. For bigger jets (B777 - B747 or even CJ4) do you have to use LOC button too? I know the Cessna here doesn't have that (I don't think)

Is it possible to get an RNAV or ILS approach approval if you reach an airport and the weather is below VFR? I know how to activate an RNAV approach, but not if I can get approval to change the approach. I don't even no if it is legally allowed IRL.

What is the best way to zoom into your instruments/autopilot screens with xbox series s controller? I can do the ones on the left/pilot side but cant seem to get it to move to the screen on thd right. TIA! 😀

hello im trying to get the copilot screen to look like yours with the flight path markers mine has all kinds of chart markings i just want the simple map looking like yours is there a default button i can hit lol. i see on your buttons with the triangles all you have showing is map and DCL TR can you help me get it back to just a normal map like yours show i have a lot of graphs and numbers showing on mine hope im explaining this right lol thanks. by the way execelent glideslope video. i sub to your channel

Doesn’t work on Xbox. You can enter the ILS flight plan which it does follow. But no glide path appears and it just flys straight over the runway

I got an issue with the localiser freq not having the correct heading.. so when i turn on app mode n loc1 the plane drifts off. Is this a known issue?
