this is a good tutorial however for some reason we cant see your mouse pointer whenever you open up your approach chart so we cant follow what you're trying to show us on the chart
Awesome video which adds to my understanding of ILS approaches. Please continue making these videos, you do a great job explaining the concepts. Agree with others that this is not a beginner video but neither is flying in general. There's a lot to learn and know, doubt anyone could explain 20 hours of content and knowledge that is required in 22 minutes. Be patient, watch other videos and you'll always pick up something new.
Great video. Thanks. Saw your little mistake on the outbound teardrop course of 60 deg. which caused the slight overshooting of the inbound leg of the ILS but saw that you recongnized it too. Always enjoy your videos.
Important notes about backcourses: - Don't fly a backcourse if there isn't a published procedure or chart for it. The sim may not model this, idk, but as I understand it, they can be unreliable IRL if not tuned for the purpose. - Most backcourses don't have vertical guidance; they're localizer-only. This will be mentioned on the chart if that's the case (i.e. "Disregard glide slope indications").
Mismatch in the barometric settings of the altimeter and the autopilot? That could explain why you were 100ft too high in the beginning of the approach.
Where did you get your 172? It is significantly different than the one that comes by default in MS FS2020. I love the combination of analogue guages with only a minimum amount of digital accessories to ease the work load. The 172 in MS FS2020 is entirely a G1000 glass cockpit.
Great video! Very well explained. As I started flying only a momth ago with the release of the msfs2020 I have watched around 15 different videos about ils but this one waa the best one. Thank you! ...any chance you could do also omentutorial for mooney m20r ovation? I am struglimg with it a bit there
I have a challenge for you P Gatcomb. I was recently flying to KTCM and given this approach instruction "KOBOLD 1524, you are 25 miles north. Maintain present heading and altitude. Expect ILS runway 16 approach via TCM 257 radial, 100 DME arc. Cleared to TCM" What are we supposed to do here? What even is the 100 DME arc??
Hello. As others have mentioned - your mouse pointer is not visible when you are over the chart, which makes it very hard to follow. Great insturction - thank you for that - if we could see where you are pointing on the plate :-)
Excellent as all of your videos. Im only flying the 152 w/o and 172 with g1000. And I’m having a hard time when there’s no ILS/Glideslope. What other precision approaches are available? GPS/RNAV maybe?
Awesome ! Thank you for sharing :) I did exactly the same flight, monkey see, monkey do :) How do you display distance on NAV1 ? My AP got a bit shaky, need to recap. Managed to calm down the plane, captured GS fine :) Rest was good, need to do same run again.
Awesome ! I did 2 more flights, just like this one...nice and smooth, actually very easy :) I flew one day + one night time. One question, how do you get distance to airport to show up on Garmin 530 ? Do you need to have WPT selected ?
Love your video! 5:27, I assume it should be slightly off to the right? And can we use the nav mode on the way to KIBBE with the second navigation gauge (the one with 113.00), instead of using heading mode? 11:35, was it supposed to be 90 degree? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm new to all this, but since it's a teardrop and not an offset entry, the initial heading from KIBBE should be 90, right?
Thank you for this! Can you please do a video on missed approach? When I miss the runway I get ALL mixed up how to get back on the approach cause the GPS does not "reset".
Hi, you might find my video helpful on missed approaches, I show you how to set the GPS back up after completion of the missed approach procedure: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bWlsDuXcgWw.html
Is it possible to explain it step by step and not just show being done . I got lost with what you are changing. What and why the Changing you are making. Thanks
Question: Is this little teardrop lap at the entry point mandatory? Why not go into the ILS course just with a right turn? If so, why not use the other radials that don't have that? Also: Why is there a radial just 1nm before the runway? How can that possibly be enough time to line up for the ils?
@P Gatcomb, I really like your videos, but why do you use the word TREE for THREE (i.e. 233 = TWO TREE TREE). Is that a Connecticut thing? Just curious.
its a good practice while talking over radio as "three" can be mistaken for other words such as "free" whilst tree is more identifiable. Another number is 5 which can be pronounced as "fife" but less people use this. Another is 9 which is pronounced "Niner" (This is down to "Nine" sounding like "Nein" being the german word for No) . It is in the same vein of the phonetic alphabet where words and pronunciations are chosen in order to make it easy to distinguish.
Hi Ken. From what I can gather, you can certainly plan for an ILS in the World Map page, but no, I've not seen the actual frequencies anywhere as an option. You can pretty much Google different charts and approach plates or there are many sites that will help. SkyVector is excellent (if you're in the US. I can't find charts in it for elsewhere), I have a paid subscription to Navigraph - also excellent and world wide. And some countries like Australia have free access to charts and supplements as well.
@@weepingeye Thanks! FSX had all frequencies available with a mouse click hovered over a runway. Perhaps this will be added to MSFS at a later date, I hope.
If a runway is ILS enabled then the frequency can be viewed within the world map prior to flight. To view the frequency select "open filters" and select NAVAIDS . The VOR/DME (ILS) can be clicked on and the frequency will display in the information section. By default the world map does not display NAVAIDS. Be sure to activate NAVAIDS in the filter. Some of the planes can list the ILS runway and frequency while in flight when selecting airports in range. I'm having fun with the G1000 and having the ILS populate while on approach.
AGREE completely. But you have that capability by changing the playbacks speed in RU-vid. Hit the three dots in the top right corner of the window and make your changes there.
@@robertmcmanus6233 There is a specific video where he explains which internet sources he uses to organize his flights. This video is about ILS approach, not about tools used for planning the flight. Here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0z6xMxFmVRI.html
@@windshearahead7012 Exactly.... this does not mean that we cannot help each others. If you watch a video about ILS approach, the minimum baseline is that you know what is ILS frequency and where to put it, where to get that specific ILS approach frequency (hence the charts), and so on. But again, if you are a beginner does not mean the community doesn't have to help you. Cheers.
I want to trust you, but cannot. You apparently are not IFR rated (you've never given us your bonafides, and have made WAY TOO many basic mistakes in other IFR-related videos). Great voice though.
He didn't claim to be IFR rated, and has said he's no longer an active pilot. What he IS is a sim enthusiast who is better at teaching the basics of IFR than the other RU-vidrs I've seen. For that - yeah, I trust him just fine.
i want to trust you, but cannot. you've never given us your bonafides. care to elaborate on the WAY TOO many basic mistakes Gatcomb has allegedly made in his other IFR-related videos?
