Glad you’re recovering from your eye surgery. Love your attitude about it. Yes, the comment about slowing down and enjoying the stitch. It’s amazing how wonderful the feel of the thread going through the fabric can be and hearing that thread go through the fabric. The joy and the contentment that can come through such a simple thing when we just slow down. Thank you for sharing the fancy sewing baskets. The work put into them and their beauty. It thrills my heart. I must admit though when I saw the holes in the “S” one I gasped and my heart hurt a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I still love it but something about seeing that after all the love and attention given to it in the past just got me. Yes, it was just showing its age and the love it had seen. I’m thinking that maybe you may take the urn you stitched and turn it into a fancy sewing basket in some special way. Until next time, happy stitching.

Glad to hear you’re recovering well. Your Flosstubes are always enjoyable. Love hearing the history of stitching. Jane and Eunice in the Spring of 1846 went traveling on a ship and enjoyed some stitching on their long journey. Now they’re getting ready for their winter hibernation. Happy stitching!

Such a wonderful video full of all the goodies! Thank you for the brief look at your applique project. That Civil War Bride quilt is going to be a stunner! I'm very intrigued with trying the back-basting method now. You Hannah is looking gorgeous and all of your sampler charts really light me up. I'm so sorry about your eye issues but your grace in dealing with it is up-lifting. The antique bags are fascinating... thank you for such a close up look at them! I'm so inspired by your projects and research for the 1840s period. I'm thinking about my great grandmothers and their stitching. I'm thinking about my own story, maybe "in 1846, Eunice Jane boarded a ship for the New World......" Good to hear that your eyes are improving. Our eyes and hands are so important for our stitching passions. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Susan, I’m glad surgery and recovery has and is going well! I love all your new charts and process and finishes. That quilt is so gorgeous and the process and with friends makes it so meaningful. I need to get back to my doll quilt! Work is such a great part of my life but still trying to get an hour or more into creative endeavors in the evening. The little quilt still sits in a corner on our work island in the kitchen. So far that has not arisen as an issue 😂. But, I want and need to finish!! Take care of yourself. It always amazes me when there seems to be a ‘reason’ for finding a video. You have a wonderful attitude, in the face of what sounds like some significant health challenges (as far as I’m concerned, ANYTHING with your eyes is serious ❤). I fell a few weeks ago, and wound up spending an unexpected week in the hospital, with a fractured hip. (In theory, that’s an issue I shouldn’t have had to deal with for another few decades, but the klutz in me is, apparently, quite the overachiever!). Anyway, this weekend, in particular, has gotten me very down, fearing that my reliance on the walker is going to last a lot longer than I’d like. You really don’t appreciate your good fortune in life until you’re thrown a curveball. My problem is minor and VERY insignificant compared to many. But, self pity just comes easily sometimes. I’ve actually had the TIME to stitch for a change, but I find it mentally challenging, for whatever reason. I think, subconsciously, it saddens me to think of WHY I suddenly have all of this free time. But, here we are, on the cusp of a new week and, after watching you, I’m going to enjoy every single one of my stitches tomorrow - embrace my opportunity instead of dwelling on what brought it into being. Thank you - you just never know when your words will have an impact - yours certainly have with me. (And, I definitely would’ve scooped up that Scarlet Letter chart, too!! I *adore* SL!!). Oh, and one last thing for this VERY long winded message - I never met a single woman named Jane in my entire first two decades of life. Then, I met my hubby, who probably has 15 of them in his family! Eunice is a new one, though - we don’t seem to have any of those. 😉 Be well!! ❤Amy

❤ I am so happy that you shared your story with me! We just have to make the most of every day in spite of the challenges! I sincerely hope that you continue to heal and find renewed strength. I completely understand not being able to focus on Stitching or anything due to a physical issues . Just a little bit every day and you will get back into the swing of life, and all of this will be in the rear view mirror. Please know that I will be thinking of you and I hope you will pop in periodically and let me know how you’re doing.

Happy that your eye is healing well. As a longtime stitcher and researcher of Baltimore Album Quilts, I have to disagree with your comment that back basting is the technique used in BAQ’s. If anything, I think the common method used was needleturn. In fact, if you look at the methods taught by one of the pre-eminent reproducers and teachers of BAQ’s, Ella Sienkiewicz, i don’t believe she even teaches back basting. Another pre-eminent BAQer, Jeana Kimball, does use and teach back basting but I believe she uses it as personal preference.
@susanstandleystitchintime
@susanstandleystitchintime 8 месяцев назад
Hi there thank you so much for your comment. I’m introducing applique to beginners, and I want them to understand the variety of techniques and methods used and the concept of basting your fabric to your background before appliquéing it. Research is ongoing, and we are still learning so much about how Baltimore blocks were constructed.I want to present applique to people beginning their journey in terms that are relatable. I am sure you are familiar with the book Lavish Legacies? It has some great visuals that are from unfinished Baltimore blocks. It shows layers of design basted onto onto the background. I will clarify things as I move forward in helping beginners on their appliqué journey. Thank you so much for watching and for your input.
@deniseisherwood6934
@deniseisherwood6934 8 месяцев назад
I am familiar with Lavish Legacies but can’t locate my copy just now to view the blocks you refer to. There has been much research done on what essentially was a 10 year time period for the making of true BAQ’s. (I leave it to the Baltimore Applique Society to argue over what constitutes a true BAQ!) Unfortunately little remains of actual blocks in process; even few references are found in women’s diaries of the day. The few blocks found do sometimes have the pieces basted on, all ready to be stitched. If I recall correctly, they are prepped for needle turn. You may have seen writings that suggest one woman was actually selling prepped blocks, based on the use of similar/same fabrics and patterns. Jeana Kimball’s theory is that there were actually two women, based on her extensive research. She is running for the second and I believe last time a BOM devoted to BAQs that contains a substantial amount of her research. The program is called Chestnut Street. Maybe someone local to you is enrolled and could let you read Jeana’s research. In any event, I find it a fascinating topic.

Susan - I didn’t know about your eye surgery either, but I’m so glad that it went well for you. I enjoyed your video today and all of the charts that interested you during your recovery. It would be amazing to see how you do the different appliqué methods and how you determine which one to use. So interesting. I try to appliqué, but I need much more practice. I’ve been wanting to try wool on one of my next cross stitch projects - that texture is so interesting to me. And ohh - that quilt behind you is absolutely gorgeous - I too love a scrappy pallet and you pulled all those colors off beautifully. I can never seem to do that. Do you have a pattern or estimated piece sizes? NP if you don’t. Thanks again for a lovely video. I especially enjoyed your story about Jane Eunice coming to America in 1846 on the ship Hibernation. 😅.
