Can you do FT8 on an iPhone? And more importantly, should you do FT8 with your iPhone?

Have you tried this with a trUSDX? I can get the audio in with decodes using a USB sound card I had but can’t get the transmit to work.

You will need to use VOX, and probably play around with the VOX settings to get it right.

Would the iPhone connect directly to a 7300 using the USB port ? I’m thinking it could be the driver would be the issue.

For audio it probably will, but not for serial.

Thanks for this video, I have the same FT8 app because I only own an iPad and iPhone. Some of my radio equipment is from the dark ages, for example on 6m 50 MHz I’m using an old Yaesu FT 480R with a Transverter built in 1980. I just did what the app suggested and hold the microphone to the phone speaker, it’s noisy and I feel like I’ve got tinnitus, but it works 😅 Over the last week I’ve managed to get over 100 qso’s this way and 36 countries, so I’m happy with the app. 73

There's MILLIONS of perfectly good older Android phones sitting in drawers all over the world. Who bother messing with a phone with no USB, headphone jack or uSD card slot ? Even a 10yo Android phone is incredibly useful for this sort of hobby. Or as a fantastic lapel mic audio recorder for RU-vidrs 👍

How do you like the iFTx app aside from no inbuilt PTT control? I think this should work fine with something like a Signalink USB. They present themselves as a usb sound card and have in built VOX circuit. With the iPhone 15 and some of the newer iPads switch to usb C, that should simplify the cabling. I have no experience with the Digirig, but I think in theory that should work similarly to the SignaLink. I think is should have a vox circuit also.

The app itself is great, but the limitations put on by Apple makes it cumbersome. I do believe a Signalink would make a lot of difference. I actually think OE4JHW made a video on exactly that.

@@LB0FI I just bought the app today. Not at home to test it fully. It seems to work well on the surface and I had it decoding via web SDR. I will give it a shot with SignaLink hopefully tonight.

@@LB0FI works quite well with the SignaLink. One cable for me from an iPhone 15. USB C to USB B into back of SignaLink. Older iPhones would need the camera adapter which is lightning to usb A. iPhones can recognize generic USB sound cards/codec. I just logged 8 contacts on 40m in short order.

The smartphone (android or iPhone) problem with it not seeing when a plug is inserted is an old problem and if i remember correctly the trick is to add a resistor in the cable.

@@LB0FI as some of the newer iPhones and Android phones no longer have the 3.5mm jack and expect audio via Bluetooth or USB your solution is better in any case.

That's what I usually do as well, but I need some options for the TEHRS POTA campout, where I'll be off grid with only 12V power all weekend.

I have just tried this on my FT-817 using signallink - worked really well with my 5 watts. Received PSK 31 reports all over Europe and into USA - very pleased to have found this app 😀
