Latha Baradwaj I dont think it was that unfair. Its just that the arguments they had were very silly. Before the debate even i was thinking that this guy should be given a chance. Unnecessarily his bad films were mouthed again and again. Even if he does not have an epic movie worth remembering, u cant take away the fact that he has been with the industry for 30+ years. That in itself is a rich experience of not just acting but how the industry works, back end operations etc. But by the end, I changed my opinion when he could not defend himself and gave silly silly arguments. About Arnab i agree with ur sentiments. I have noticed that he has a mind set about the direction of the debate and his own personal views as being the gospel truth. He will drive the debate only to that direction, interject when the opponent is giving a sound reply, or immediately answer with another question.
Hear me out - this country is run by academically non qualified people now. The academically non qualified are excellent at making a lot of noise and attracting people by their loud voice and dialogue-baazi. For eg. Narendram Modi, Amit shah. These people are in turn appointing more of their type - gajendra chauhan (who says every hit film is A-grade. By his logic if sunny leone's next sleaze film is a hit, it will be classified as A-grade by the FTII chairman). I don't give a damn about the gandhis. But I think we had a good PM in manmohan Singh. But its just that he was too good a person. Academics are like that - they can't thump around like the non educated people. These non educated people were the ones who ran around playing joker in class while people like manmohan studied. I feel this country is going down to the dumps. All that Modi is doing is show and display - yoga, selfies. All this is good..but u just HOPE he is doing work too...and not just carrying out the agenda of corporate india (ambani, adani) that brought him to power. Crude oil prices were low all over the world and we had to pay high, thanks to nexus between modi and corporate india. I wish we had a 3rd front other than bjp and Congress.
I was a neutral when the debate started but ended on the same note as Anupam Kher ended, "Gajendra ji aap chup hi rahiye". Such a silly argument that it is a govt entrusted responsibility. Tmrw if an international speaker comes and asks him about the cinema and its finer points will he say the same thing to that person? That ask the govt? Or, that i refuse to answer ur question? My respect for Anupam Kher grew because he said a couple of points which i myself was thinking during the debate: a) he mentioned in the beginning that it is wrong to bring out just the sleazy movies Gajendra has done, and b) that not every film made is great, every director makes bad movies, and every actor at some point of his career has been a part of b grade movies and he himself has acted in 50 or so such films

These things are very subjective. A TV debate is a very bad place to discuss subjective judgments about someone's capabilities. It is sad to see someone's life achievements being written off as junk. He may not be fit for the job but Arnab and his audience are not qualified to pass judgement on this. Arnab as usual, has already decided the outcome of the debate and if someone had any doubts, he also made it clear several times that the problem is with Gajendra and Gajendra alone. These artsy foreign film festivals are the cool kids club of the film world. We should not rate them so high as to judge a person's caliber based on whether he attends a festival. A chairman's role needs many other administrative and people skills that are orthogonal to one's acting skills. I know many a scientists who are very good at their science but would fail miserably if asked to run the institute. Then there are those "lesser scientists" whose scientific achievements are not much to speak of but can manage people, process, organisational politics very well. Even if they are not very good as scientists, they know the domain well. Their job is not to do science but to be the "roadblock remover" for other scientists.

Anupam Kher is speaking as if he has won several Oscars and it seems as if he has done very sensitive roles. What Anupam Kher has done in ram-lakhan , beta , Mai Tera Hero and many more b - grade movies. What kind of films Bollywood makes is well-known to everyone. Some panelists think they are equal to Stanley Kubrick. The whole debate is baseless and if the government has decided to make Gajendra Chauhan the chairman then others opinion don't matter. This was probably one of the most dignified debates on the newshour with very patient and issue-oriented responses by the speakers, especially Mr. Anupam Kher and Mr. Gajendra Chauhan. However, Arnab really ruined it by ignoring all of Chauhan's replies, screaming over them, and constantly poking him with the names of two of his films. It is good to be passionate and assertive about your opinion, but here, Arnab was just trying to prove a point. We already know the students' opinion and I believe this debate was to get Chauhan's viewpoint in. Sadly, it became all about Arnab Goswami's opinions. Very disappointing manner of conduct. It is unsubscribe for me now.
