FTM Transitioning into a middle aged man - adjusting my internal self image

I turn 40 next February and I really do not feel my age at all, however, a conversation with my Brother made me see the reality that my gender transition, as I progress through hormone treatment (testosterone), will lead me straight into to the body make up of a middle aged man. This has brought out another level of grieving for my lost boyhood and the beginning of my adjustment of my internal self image

i am a 52 year old Transman, 6 months on T. I know its 7 years ago that this was posted, but i can so relate to this, and it makes me feel so relieved that i am not alone. I also regret that i didnt know about all this many years ago, and I feel robbed of my male youth, So i have to accept that and make the most of my journey now. i will be transitioning into to a middle aged man yes, so let me be the best one i can be and enjoy my journey forward.

I'm 37. I read Chaz's book prior to transition and in it he says "I grieve because I will never experience what it's like to grow up as a man, only what it's like to grow old as one". That realization hit me, and while I do wish I had a boyhood, I have to be thankful for the experiences I have been blessed with. I try to keep that perspective.

In a way I can relate. I haven't transitioned (and can't), but for all of my adult life, I have lived my life as the teenage boy I was read as. Now, at 36, I no longer look like a teenage boy - I'm starting to look like a middleaged woman instead. I am really struggling with my identity and can't relate to my new role at all. I know it's not completely the same thing, but when I watched your video I felt I could relate to it on some level.

It seems that so many people relate to this, its so good to know Im not alone! As someone pointed out, we are the age we are, transition or not, however as pre T trans guys we get percieved as so young & our mental image gets frozen there & then suddenly on T we start looking our age & that can feel like a massive fast forward in time and a bit of a shock! Im realising that I need to see my transition itself as my boyhood, the trans rite of passage we all go through to become men.

I feel I can relate. I've looked like a 14-16 year old boy since I was 14! I'm 28 now, and yes, I pass but it was never ideal, especially only having female ID (means I can't go to bars). But I'm on T now and changing my name, and I've been kinda rethinking it as wishing I was in fact 14 and transitioning then. I feel like I've been frozen there and everyone's seen me as being that age. So T is going to make me twice that age, and that's actually quite daunting!

Hi Finn I totally relate. I was 42 when I started transitioning and I'm 47 now. I feel very much that the learning curve has been vertical . Video coming up later about this :)

I was exactly the same! I only saw younger guys in the beginning, & somehow my head combined with my frozen image of myself & I forgot I wasnt that age....now reality has kicked in! We have missed those years, but we still have loads left to live as our true selves & with the right effort, we can still make the most of our new bodies, thats my mission! i too get mistaken for very young, but I realise that wont be for much longer & that is an odd feeling! Thanks so much for your awesome comments

Thank you! I really am....tho I dont feel like it...let alone look it!!! You have a good point my friend, whatever age we transition at, there is still loss to come to terms with. The present and feeling thankful is where its at. Wise words, thank you so much :)

I know 100% exactly what you mean. I spent years trying to just accept what I am and it's only been the last 6 months that I started searching youtube and finding so many videos of young trans men going through their transition. I've been looking at them wishing so much I had the strength to become the men they were becoming. (I'd already managed to make the jump and accept whatever happens I've missed my teens etc) but then all of a sudden something hit me. (out of space-more to follow!)

Thanks for making this vid dude. I'm also 30 something and I feel that pain of not fully having had my boyhood. I so relate to all that you say, and the physical effects of alcohol abuse. But we have been learning, also trans guys also trans guys often look a good deal younger than their cis counter parts. We have have have had our own particular brand of ftm wisdom and there is no shame in that.
@mattfromengland7945
@mattfromengland7945 11 лет назад
I'd been watching 20 year olds and imagining me doing what they were and my body making those changes. Then all of a sudden it hit me. I'm not that age anymore (I'm 39 too), so I can't compare myself to them. It was kind of like, I missed those years, but my brain was still stuck with the thought that if I decided to do something about this I'd change and actually live those years. All of a sudden I was hit with the shock that I've missed them!!!!
@FinnTheInfinncible
@FinnTheInfinncible 11 лет назад
I agree, ageing is part of life, something we gradually come to terms with along the way. However, as older trans guys we dont really have time to come to terms with it, we go straight from puberty and looking 14 to suddenly looking our age and thats a shock! I think that allowing ourselves to feel the pain of the loss of boyhood, lets us then lets go and be able to fully see all we have gained through transition and move into a place of peace.....thats where Im aiming :)

I know I've not fully transitioned yet, but I'm already mentally transitioning into being fitter than I used to be. I'm out jogging regularly and losing some fat, rediscovering muscles on my legs and arms. It's really cool and I'm feeling a bit younger. You're still young... you don't have to become a middle aged man. A lot of that is a state of mind! !! :-)

There is this very large part of me that is frozen at age 12 and to suddenly feel wide awake at 48 is a major shock. To come to terms with the fact that I will never have the rights of passage any other Cis male has had is extremely hard to wrap my head around. It will take years to fully deal with that I'm sure. I have missed so much and all I can do is try to make the most of my life now. I honestly cant see the 48 year old, maybe that's a good thing for now Thanks Finn it needed to be said
@EthanJay1261
@EthanJay1261 11 лет назад
Yeah Finn, I've experienced the same emotions. I have always seen myself, when I'd look in the mirror, as a 'young' man with all the muscles and less body fat. Now, I understand that I'm a 50+ male, however I'm sure going to try and get my body to that image in my mind, lol. You are looking real good my friend.!!

I have only just now begun to admit that I am a trans man - I said it aloud to my therapist this very week. In my mind, I am always a 20ish guy despite the fact that I am 45 years old. While I look young for my age, even when/if I transition, I will certainly not be the young guy I see in my head. And like you, I grieve for that period of my life. Yet I keep reading blogs where folks say to accept where you are on your journey and be grateful that you are starting now rather than not at all. So, I am trying to mentally prepare myself for life as a 46 yo man rather than the 20 something I have always been in my head. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

Bless you buddy, yes I completely relate. It may be a good time for me to do a catch up on this actually as I feel very differently now. I do at times still get hit with a wave of grief for the boyhood I never had but I have moved away from the image of a young guy to matching my internal image with my actual age and am actually really enjoying looking my actual age....wrinkles and all! I have found that a balance of not denying the grief, allowing myself to feel it, alongside focusing on the positive of what I have now and making the most of the time, has really helped me to come to terms with it. I wish you all the very best on your journey and I hope to see you around the finnfam! Always happy to help if I can

I never had a girly puberty, it was all messed up; I had a natural understanding of myself as a boy. When I played, I was the male protagonist, and when I wrote my stories and novels, it was always me as a guy in there, so the others had the problem seeing me on the outside, no being able to match it up with the stuff I did.
@AndyMcKeever12
@AndyMcKeever12 11 лет назад
Finn-boy, you don't have to "move your image." I'm sure most cis men don't. We all mourn our youth; hitting 40, 50, 60, etc. is hard to take & rather shocking at times. That's why we keep our "13-year-old," especially as an ftm. If you have to turn into something, though, glad you're turning into a middle-aged man instead of a middle-aged woman. That beginning belly would have been on your hips, bud! Mourn when you need to, but keep that boy close; he'll serve you well when needed. Love ya, man!

I hear you dude, Im 37 and thinking the same thing! However, look at people like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp! Both are 50. The moral of the story is, grey hair looks good on older men, men age better and if you take good care of yourself and stay healthy and fit then you have nothing to worry about! Its all about respecting your body! Most middle aged men drink too much, eat too much shit and don't get exercise! You are what you eat etc right? All good bro! It's exciting!

Oh it it indeed! Its great arriving places and feeling the achievemnet, but the journey is where its at! I love sharing all this and talking with others who feel the same way, I have made some amazing friends and learnt so much, Im blessed :)

Thats exactly it! I keep meaning to read his book. I have the same mind set, things happen when they happen and you cant change the past, only how you view it. The way things have happened has left me with a unique experience that I also feel very blessed to have had, its made me the person I am....and i like that person! I do think it helps to acknowledge these feelings though and then let them pass on. Glad to hear you feel the same way bud :)

I dont see you as 48 either mate! It is hard, when we spend our wholes live asleep and unhappy, then suddenly awaken and start living our true selves, its a wonderful feeling, but at the same time there is regret for all those years lost. Its important to acknowledge the pain, but not wallow in it. The future is in our hands :)

Finn, thank you. I am thinking so much about this topic. I am pre-T, 31 but I feel I stopped growing mentally at 21- 23, when my body started to develop more feminine side. So know I am thinking...the more I wait with transitioning the more I loose this time of "young boy" experience. In my case it is difficult and I don't know if I will be able to transition any time soon...it makes me sad. But thank you for your honest reflection.

+Leo Just Leo it is so very hard when we are older. We can't ever truly have our boyhood but it is possible to experience the changes of testosterone as a boyhood of our own making. I hope you get to start the journey my friend. It's never too late

@ABC-mn1no

I'm 23, female. I came out of the trans closet at 17 but immediately returned in after negative backlash. I'm attractive and feminine and ideal appearance wise for my age, but the person who i feel inside is not a girl. I've always felt this phantom effect of having a male body. I want to give it some time before a transition. It's going to sound crazy, but women are devalued in our society as they age and I'm already having a hard time being a young one. I want to transition when I'm 38-40, because I will still get to live out who I'm meant to be, and not have my value tied to my youth.
@FinnTheInfinncible
@FinnTheInfinncible 7 лет назад
Its not crazy at all, you transition at the time that is right for you my friend. There will always be people that are against us, but we have to do whats right for us, not whats right for them
@RaefonB
@RaefonB 11 лет назад
It's the hardest part, I think: I too have massive regrets about missing out on my boyhood and early manhood. But, like you say, we have the duality of growing up female, which will hopefully make us into better men. Lol.
@FinnTheInfinncible
@FinnTheInfinncible 11 лет назад
I am! I was already aging...I just hadnt noticed.....and then it hit me! No more 14yr old boy face!!! I did actually grow up fast, your right, so i think that likely makes my loss feel more profound. I guess we have to make peace with that in the best way we can. Im now on a serious exercise mission....no belly for me!

On the plus side, being ftm frequently means being taken for younger than you are? I think this is partly a generational thing too, where people in our generation and younger have lost a lot of the traditional markers that make us feel like adults. But I’m with you on the being sad to miss a masculine teenage experience. I just turned 40 a few months ago, which was also my two years on T-versary. I seriously don’t think of myself as 40! I have grey hair and t also gave me a gut, but I don’t have kids or own a home and I still read comics. It’s weird to think I am technically a middle aged man.

@soberdoggy

Well I'm 49 and only 8 months on T. I feel middle aged now, you're still a young'n! LOL Middle age doesn't mean anything in particular, necessarily. I mean there are certain physical things, sure, but many of them don't have to happen for YOU the way they do with others. I know many older men, older than me, who look way better than many 40 or 30 year olds. It is unique for folks like US though, to be doing puberty at our ages. We did miss out on our younger male years and I feel the pain too.

eating disorders are very very common with trans peeps, being skinny keeps you androgynous...being overweight also hides things...al alo of guys have had issues with one or the other. Sadly addiction issues are also common, which is really understandable response to the internal pain we feel. Congrats on your recovery my friend!

I think these thoughts are also encouraged by the fact that I still look very young (I'm sure you probably get this too) but being mistaken for a guy all the time without T must mean they think I am pre-puberty. Well, not quite now but I still get ID'd and I imagine that's why, because they think I'm a guy. So that doesn't help, as I really don't feel 40. Yet if I were to start T I would probably catch up really quick and start to look my age. That's a very odd feeling!!!!!
@astrog8tr
@astrog8tr 11 лет назад
Well you don't actually CHANGE your age. So that since you are 39, hard to believe, you do stay 39, until you become 40 (or ...). You still have the life experiences and so on of the person you were (and still are).

Then it occurred to me that if I had surgery the healing wouldn't be the same as a young man either. Although I'm sure that doesn't actually make that much difference in reality, it's not as if a 40 year old going in for surgery would be like, oh I'm old, I won't heal. Hey, Finn. Do you find that transition for middle-aged FTM is a different experience than that of a 20 year old? I am almost 40 and about to start T; I'm learning from others who are in support groups that the mentality seems so much different for young transmen. For me, I firmly believe everyone has their own unique journey, however I think the issues may be different. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for your videos!!!
@FinnTheInfinncible
@FinnTheInfinncible 10 лет назад
Hi my friend. I do think its very different, in all manner of ways. At our age, we have a huge life of being read as female and we cant erase that, unlike a trans person of 17 or so who would find it much easier to start afreash and go stealth, we cant easily do that! We often have larger families to consider, children, grandhildren, nieces and nephews, coming out is far more complicated for us. I also think that our lived experience is different, there is usually (though not always!) a wisesness with age that a younger person may not have. Though I have learned so very much from transpeople of all ages, its my own age group who I turn to when it comes to relating to similar life experiences, apart from transition and the feelings that go with it, I dont have as much in common with a very young guy. Well.....apart from the fact that puberty made me feel and act about 14!!! You are right, each journey is beautifully unique and that adds to the wonderful trans tapestry of life :)

You mean *transforming into a middle aged man... I'm the same as you, I am on the wrong side of 40, but I could pass for 20 something. If you think you can't look good after 40, look at Hugh Jackman. He's over 50.

hey man, I know you are completely right, there are plenty of good looking 40 somethings, and now that my head has caught up with reality, I actually prefer the look of a 40 something to a 20 something, which is good really....considering Im 40 something lol! Its not that I didnt think 40 plus meant you cant look good. Its just because Ive had an image of myself as a man for so long, that has been hidden from the light of my concious due to to gender denial, it had kinda got "stuck" on the younger image and hadnt aged with me. It suddenly hit me one day that was the case and I realised that as transitioning into a man, I wasnt transitioning into the image of the man I had held in my head for so long, but into the "middle aged" man that I am...if that makes sense! I think the moment I had this realisation was the moment it all became real, that I really was a man, that it wasnt a fantasy.

shit, that's spooky, I only read your comment after writing l$mine, and you mention that stupid "wrong' side of 40 as well....and Hugh Jackman was the other guy I was thinking of but couldn't remember the name....

@@FinnTheInfinncible ''I was exactly the same! Thanks so much for your awesome comments'' That's on of the comments u made yourself
