In this video I will take you through my Anaerobic Threshold test. This is not the same as the ''well known'' 20-minute FTP test used by so many cycling test programs. (outcome can be similar but doesn't have to be)
In this test my Anaerobic threshold power & heart rate will be determined by analysis of the CO2 and CO values in my breath. This will give an very accurate value of the anaerobic threshold power witch wil than be used as FTP. (functional threshold power)
It will also give a aerobic threshold and an approximate VO2max.
Test protocol:
start at 120Watt for 3 min, add 30watt every 3 min until threshold is reached, than add 30watt every minute until failure.
Result:
Weight 83,2
Height:186,5cm
Fat percentage: 6,9
Anaerobic threshold: 375 Watt
Max reached value: 540 Watt
VO2 max: 66 ml/m/kg

That's an impressive body fat percentage. I just got here and don't know anything about your or cycling for that matter (professional cycling). This max output type of stuff makes me feel alive. I can still feel a superb rush at like 85% of max, and some plyometrics and such, but the rush comes later, like 15 minutes after or during cooldown.

Solid work, I have never done it that way where you step up 10W in 1 minute increments above your FTP power I guess it's more accurate that way. If you don't mind what is your current weight?

Thanks for sharing this Jasper! Very useful and great effort indeed, well done! I am a novice and trying to understand how to perform my FTP test at the gym, so not so professionally, but at least to get an idea of the numbers. Why was your threshold around 370 since you reached 500+ watts? What determines the threshold? Is that when your cadence started increasing? What cadence do you have to maintain to check your strength? :)

The threshold means where your blood is building up lactic acid quicker then you can remove it. Too much of it stays in the muscle the harder it gets to use the muscles.... You can check it with a quick bloodprick like a diabitic needle prick. Use a strip and check at each interval.

I just did my first FTP test today. I got on RU-vid to find videos and watch other people suffer the way I suffered. My numbers...? not as impressive as yours, but the level of suffering was matched. Excellent work - loved the video.

Really brilliant effort and excellent video. If possible, can you clarify what your 20min and 60min FTP test results are (from around this time of year) (just for comparison with the 375 Anaerobic threshold from this test). thank you.

thanks. There is a lot of controversy regarding each test right now both in terms of accuracy and difficulty. We recently released a video on the 20min test, and are making some new videos on the power curve interpretation next month. Also we have something coming soon on lactate testing accuracy. Although there is a relationship between MAP/RAMP test (this one) and FTP test, they are not exactly the same. Not many riders will be willing and able to do this test....so congrats to you...I admire your effort. You certainly gave it 100%!

@7:39 the tester says "dont stop ur blood pressure will drop too fast" does this mean risk of faint? I recall when I was younger & middle distance runner at the end of a race I wud hav to keep walking for fear of fainting

I know this is old but I just got my VO2max tested and it was 43.8. I now know I need to work harder. I am also off a heart surgery 3 months ago where I was down to 28.6 before surgery so in 3 months I’ve taken it up that much I’m 29

did that kind of test too, but had to keep cadence around 65, every 2 minutes 25watts more, and not allowed to stand up, because it gives you 20watts instantly
